CONTAINER COMPRISING TEAR TAPE, A CONTAINER BLANK, AND A METHOD FOR OPENING SAID CONTAINER
TECHNICAL FIELD
5 This invention relates to a container comprising in a closed state a bottom, four side walls, and a lid, wherein said bottom comprising at least partially overlapping bottom segments, said lid comprising at least partially overlapping lid segments, and each bottom and lid segment being connected to one of said side walls via a separate fold line, wherein said container 10 further comprising tear tape for opening of said container. The invention also relates to a corresponding container blank and a method for opening such a container.
The container according to the invention can advantageously be used for 15 transporting and storing many different type of products, including for example consumer tissue products such as paper towels, napkins, absorbent articles, or the like.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
20 There is a need to provide containers that can be easily opened and stored, for example in a shelf, and from which part of the container content can be easily taken out. EP 0 571 197 A1 discloses a container which incorporates a tear tape secured to the inside surface of the container's four side walls adjacent lines of weakness. Opening of the container is realised by pulling
25 the tear tape through all four side walls, such that two trays are formed from the top and bottom parts of the container.
A disadvantage with this prior art container is a relatively low container stability and strength. A further disadvantage is the lack of protection of the products of the container once opened. There is thus a need for an improved container removing the above mentioned disadvantages.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide an inventive container where the previously mentioned problems are at least partly avoided. This object is achieved by the features of the characterising portion of claim 1 or 14, as well as the method defined by claim 15.
The invention concerns a comprising in a closed state a bottom, four side walls, and a lid, wherein said bottom comprising at least partially overlapping bottom segments, said lid comprising at least partially overlapping lid segments, and each bottom and lid segment being connected to one of said side walls via a separate fold line, wherein said container further comprising tear tape for opening of said container.
The invention is characterized in that said tear tape is secured to said lid segments and/or said bottom segments, and said tear tape of any lid or bottom segment being arranged close to the fold line associated with said lid or bottom segment.
The invention further concerns a container blank that is adapted to be folded to form a container having in closed state a bottom, four side walls, and a lid, wherein said container blank comprising a longitudinal centre panel forming said four side walls, a longitudinal lid panel forming said lid segments, and a longitudinal bottom panel forming said bottom segment, and each bottom and lid segment being connected to one of said side walls via a separate fold line, wherein said container blank further comprising tear tape for opening of said container. The invention further being characterized in that said tear tape is secured to said lid segments and/or said bottom segments, and said tear tape of any lid or bottom segment being arranged close to the fold line associated with said lid or bottom segment.
The invention further includes a method for opening a container comprising in a closed state a bottom, four side walls, and a lid, wherein said bottom comprises at least partially overlapping bottom segments, said lid comprises at least partially overlapping lid segments, and each bottom and lid segment being connected to one of said side walls via a separate fold line, wherein said container further comprising tear tape for opening of said container, said tear tape is secured to said lid segments and/or said bottom segments, and said tear tape of any lid or bottom segment is arranged close to the fold line associated with said lid or bottom segment, the method comprising the step of pulling an end of said tear tape to at least partially separate said lid or bottom from said side walls, such that an at least partially separated lid and/or bottom region is formed, wherein said at least partially separated lid and/or bottom region may form a flexible flap that provides access to the content of said container, as well as a reclosable opening in said container. It is clear the shape, size and form of the flexible flap depends on how the user decides to tear the lid and/or bottom segments.
The inventive container provides several advantageous aspects for the user, besides being easy to open without the need for any cutting tools. For example, due to the fact that the tear tape is arranged in the lid and/or bottom segments forming the lid and/or bottom, and not in the side walls of the container as the prior art solution, the inventive container exhibits relatively high stability and strength, because any weakening of the container associated with the tear tape does not reduce container side wall stability. The inventive container is thus also suitable for being stapled both in the opened and closed state. Another advantageous aspect of the container according to the invention is the ability to close the container after removal of container content. A flexible flap may be formed in the lid and/or bottom by pulling the tear tape, and the flap can be bent outwardly for removal of container content, and may subsequently be released or pushed back to its natural state position, where it is flush with the rest of the lid and/or bottom, facilitating reclosure of the container to a certain extent. This aspect is particularly important when the container product should be protected against dirt and dust. Yet another advantageous aspect of the container according to the invention is the ability to remove content from the container while still being stored for example in a shelf. Traditional containers opened by cutting free the lid segments and unfolding them backwards require access to the lid segments, as well as sufficient space for the unfolding and subsequent folding during closing of the container. Hence, a container stored in a shelf with little vertical space between the upper side of the container and the neighbouring upper shelf must normally first be removed from the shelf before the lid segments can be unfolded. After product removal from the container, the container is closed and lifted to its place in the shelf. This procedure is time consuming and requires high strength, and may lead to health problems, such as lifting injuries and/or repetitive stress injuries. The inventive container solves this problem by providing an opening with a reclosable flap in the lid and/or bottom, and by being arranged on the side with the lid facing a horizontal directing, and with the free end of the flap oriented upwardly. In this arrangement, the user may simply bend down the flap in the lid to a certain extent, such that an opening is formed in the horizontal direction of the container. No motion of the container is necessary, and the user may remove as much content as required. After finished removal, the flap may be released, whereupon it flexes back to its natural closed position, possibly requiring a certain help to arrive at the completely close state of the container again. The risk that container content unwanted falls out from the container is small since the container may be arranged with the flap open towards to the top. The size and position of the flap is determined by the user who pulls the tear tape in the lid segments.
Further advantages are achieved by implementing one or several of the features of the dependent claims.
For example, a distance between the fold line and the tear tape of the lid and/or bottom segment may be within the range of about 1 - 40 mm, specifically about 2 - 20 mm. If the tear tape is arranged too far away from the fold line, it may become difficult to tear open the inner lid and/or bottom segment in regions having overlapping lid and/or bottom segments, simply because the outer lid and/or bottom segment may cover the area of the tear tape of the inner lid and/or bottom segment in the folded, overlapping, state. However, when the tear tape is located sufficiently close to the fold line, the outer lid and/or bottom segment in the overlapping state does no longer cover the tear tape, or at least not to an extent that prevents the user from being able to find and pull the tear tape. The accessibility of the tear tape is also dependent on the shape and folding of the lid and/or bottom segments in the overlapping areas of the lid and/or bottom segments.
According to a further advantageous aspect of the invention, each lid and/or bottom segment may be provided with a separate tear tape segment. This arrangement has the advantage of not limiting which lid and/or bottom segment to open first, in what order to open said segments, or to what extent said segments are opened. Alternatively, a single continuous tear tape may be secured across all of said lid or bottom segments. This arrangement has the advantage that finding and grasping just a single tear tape end is required at the lid and/or bottom. After complete tearing of the tear tape on a first lid and/or bottom segment, continued tearing of the following lid or bottom segments does not require finding a new tear end, and the user may simply continue pulling the same tear tape. DESCRIPTION OF EXAMPLE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
Various aspects of the invention will hereinafter be described in conjunction with the appended drawings to illustrate and not to limit the invention, wherein like designations denote like elements, and variations of the inventive aspects are not restricted to the specifically shown embodiment, but are applicable on other variations of the invention. Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the container 1 according to the invention in a closed state. The container 1 may be made of many different materials, but any of paperboard, corrugated board, or cardboard is preferred as container material due to the low material cost, recyclability, low weight, and relatively high strength. The strength of the material may be selected according to the specific requirements of the products to be transported and stored therein, and is easily configurable using well-known measures, such as number of corrugated intermediate sheets, thickness of sheets, etc. The container 1 comprises, in a closed state, a bottom 2, four side walls 3, 4, 5, 6, and a lid 7. Fig. 2 shows the container of fig. 1 in the opened state, where lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 are not folded to overlap each other.
The container 1 is formed by folding a container blank 19, as illustrated in fig. 3. The container blank 19 is a flat container board that has been manufactured according to given specifications, and which is arranged to be folded into a container 1 , and subsequently fixed in its desired folded shape. Fixing is preferably realised by mutually fixing overlapping lid and bottom segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15 of the folded container 1 , for example by means of adhesive, mechanical fixing elements, adhesive tape, or the like. Many different configurations of the container blank 19 are possible within the scope of the invention. A preferred container blank 19 for forming the container 1 according to the invention comprises four side walls 3, 4, 5, 6, four at least partially overlapping bottom segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 forming the bottom 2, and four at least partially overlapping lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 forming the lid 7. Each of said bottom and lid segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15 being connected to one of said side walls 3, 4, 5, 6 via a separate fold line 16, 17, and each of said side walls 3, 4, 5, 6 being connected to a neighbouring side wall 3, 4, 5, 6 by means of at least one fold line 18. All of said fold lines 16, 17, 18 may be formed by longitudinal indentations, perforations, scored lines, or the like, as is well known in the art.
The container 1 further comprises tear tape 20 for simplified opening of said container 1 . In the embodiment shown in the figures, the tear tape 20 is secured to each of the lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15. The tear tape 20 is illustrated with a dash-dotted line 20 in fig. 1 and 2. The tear tape is secured to an inner side of the lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 to ensure reliable tearing of said segments 12, 13, 14, 15. During tearing of the lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15, the tear tape is pulled through the wall of the lid segments. The inventive container may alternatively be provided with tear tape secured to the bottom segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 instead, or tear tape 20 may be secured to both the lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 and bottom segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 . The tear tape 20 of any lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15 is arranged close to the fold line 17 associated with said lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15.
The lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 of the closed container of fig. 1 are partly overlapping. During closing of the lid 7, the lid segments 13, 15 associated with the short side walls 4, 6 of the container of fig. 1 and 2 are first folded from an open position to a closed position. Thereafter, the lid segments 12, 14 associated with the long side walls 3, 5 of the container 1 of fig. 1 and 2 are folded from an open position to a closed position, in which the lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 are partly overlapping. Other folding sequences are of course possible within the scope of the invention. Due to the overlapping arrangement of lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 in the closed state, access to the tear tape 20 positioned on the lid segments 13, 15 firstly folded to the closed positioned, i.e. the lid segments 13, 15 positioned on the inside of subsequently folded lid segments 12, 14, is limited. For this reason, the tear tape 20 is arranged close to the fold line 17 associated with each lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15. Herein, the term close defines that a distance D between the fold line 17 and the tear tape 20 of said lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 is within the range of about 1 - 40 mm. More specifically, said distance D is within the range of about 2 - 20 mm. This distance D is measured by firstly unfolding the container 1 into a flat state, and subsequently measuring the distance D between a centre of the fold line 17 to the closest edge of the tear tape 20, as illustrated in fig. 4.
The tear tape 20 of each lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15 of the disclosed embodiment is aligned with the longitudinal extension of the fold line 17 associated with said lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15. This aligned arrangement of the tear tape 20 allows simplified manufacturing of the container 1 because the orientation of the tear tape 20 is then aligned with the transport direction of the production line of the container blank 19. Other orientations of the tear tape 20 may however be selected if desired. To simplify opening of the container 1 , each lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15 having a tear tape 20 may be provided with at least one line of weakness (not shown). The line of weakness is aligned with the corresponding tear tape 20 and serves to facilitate simplified tearing of the lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15 upon pulling of the tear tape 20. Preferably, each line of weakness substantially overlaps with the corresponding tear tape 20. The line of weakness is preferably made by perforating or scoring the lid segment 12,
13, 14, 15 along a line. Alternatively, in case the fold line 16, 17 itself is formed by a line of perforation or similar weakening, and the tear tape 20 is arranged sufficiently close to the fold line 16, 17, the fold line 16, 17 itself may function as the line of weakness.
At least one end of each tear tape 20 is preferably provided with an access point (not shown) on the associated lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15. The access point may be formed by providing at least one slit extending a certain distance on each side of the tear tape 20 at said access point, thereby facilitating simplified commencement of tearing of said lid segment 12, 13,
14, 15. The tear tape 20 is preferably secured to the lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 of the container blank 19, i.e. in an unfolded state of the container 1 , as it travels on a production band or the like. The tear tape 20 may be secured across all of the lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 as a single continuous tear tape 20 and remain in this state also after folding the container blank 19 and mutually fixing the overlapping lid and bottom segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15. This configuration has the advantage of requiring only finding and grasping of a single end of the tear tape 20 to pull. When a first lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15 is completely teared off, tearing of the neighbouring lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15 may be initiated by simply further pulling of the single tear tape 20. Alternatively, the tear tape 20 may be cut into segments 20 after securing a single continuous tear tape 20 across the lid segments. Cutting of the tear tape 20 may advantageously be performed simultaneously with the cutting of the container blank 19 into lid and bottom segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15. The cutting of the tear tape 20 results in a separate segment of tear tape 20 being attached to each lid and/or bottom segment 8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15, which lid and bottom segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15 are separated by a cut 22, as illustrated in fig. 3. This configuration has the advantage of allowing more specific tearing of the lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15, what lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 to tear first, and to what extent.
The side walls 3, 4, 5, 6 are free from tear tape 20 and weakening lines in order to avoid any decrease in strength of the side walls 3, 4, 5, 6. The container 1 according to the invention can thus carry a high load, for example during stapling of multiple containers 1 , or lifting of a fully loaded container 1 .
As previously mention, the container 1 is formed by folding a flat container blank 19 as shown in fig. 3. The unfolded container blank 19 comprises a longitudinal centre panel 24 that forms the four side walls 3, 4, 5, 6. A longitudinal lid panel 25 that forms the lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15, and a longitudinal bottom panel 26 that forms the bottom segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 . In fig. 3, it is clearly shown that the tear tape 20 is secured to each lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15 close the associated fold line 17 of each of said lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15.
The advantage of the inventive container 1 will be further described below in the context of using the container 1 . A user being supplied with a container 1 according to the invention and full with products may wish to store the container 1 in a storage room until completely emptied, but without performing the additional intermediate step of emptying the container 1 and storing only the products of the container 1 in the storage room. However, upon periodic removal of products from the container 1 , the container 1 must on each occasion be opened and reclosed to prevent dirt and dust from soiling the products. Moreover, the container 1 must possibly be lifted down from a shelf before being opened due to the limited space available in the shelf and the large space required unfolding the lid or bottom segments 8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15 of a conventional container 1 . This time consuming and potentially unhealthy handling can be eliminated by means of the inventive container 1 .
Upon delivery of the inventive container 1 , the user may tear open one lid segment 12, 13, 14, 15 completely, and neighbouring lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15 partly, such that a flexible flap 52 is formed consisting of the still overlapping lid segments 12, 13, 14, 15. Thereafter, the user arranges the container with a side wall 3, 4, 5, 6 facing downwards, and the free end 53 of the flap 52 oriented upwardly. The products of the container 1 are prevented from falling out because a large part of the lid 7 is still integrally attached to the side walls 3, 4, 5, 6 of the container 1 , and the flap 52 exhibits a certain resistance against bending outwardly in the horizontal direction, as illustrated by the arrow 50 in fig. 5. Upon withdrawal of products from the container 1 , the user deflects the flap 52 outwardly to a certain extent sufficient to expose the inside 51 of the container, facilitating grasping and removal of required amount of products from the container 1 , and thereafter the flap 52 will return to its natural state, closing the container again 1 . No lifting of handling of the container 1 is required, and the products remain clean and protected. In fig. 5, the lid 7 is opened, but it should be clear the bottom 2, or both the lid 7 and bottom 2 may alternatively be opened.
Reference signs mentioned in the claims should not be seen as limiting the extent of the matter protected by the claims, and their sole function is to make the claims easier to understand. As will be realised, the invention is capable of modification in various obvious respects, all without departing from the scope of the appended claims.

Claims

1 . A container (1 ) comprising in a closed state a bottom (2), four side walls (3, 4, 5, 6), and a lid (7), wherein said bottom (2) comprising at least partially overlapping bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 ), said lid (7) comprising at least partially overlapping lid segments (12, 13, 14, 15), and each bottom and lid segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) being connected to one of said side walls (3, 4, 5, 6) via a separate fold line (16, 17), wherein said container (1 ) further comprising tear tape (20) for opening of said container (1 ), characterised in that said tear tape (20) is secured to said lid segments (12, 13, 14, 15) and/or said bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 ), and said tear tape (20) of any lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) being arranged close to said fold line (16, 17) associated with said lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15).
2. The container according to claim 1 , characterised in that a distance (D) between said fold line (16, 17) and said tear tape (20) of said lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) is within the range of about 1 - 40 mm.
3. The container according to claim 1 , characterised in that a distance (D) between said fold line (16, 17) and said tear tape (20) of said lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) is within the range of about 2 - 20 mm.
4. The container according to any of the previous claims, characterised in that said tear tape (20) is secured to an inside surface of said lid and/or bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15).
5. The container according to any of the previous claims, characterised in that said tear tape (20) of any lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) is aligned with said fold line (16, 17) associated with said lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15).
6. The container according to any of the previous claims, characterised in that at least one line of weakness is formed in each lid and/or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) having a tear tape (20), wherein said at least one line of weakness being aligned with the corresponding tear tape (20).
7. The container according to claim 6, characterised in that said at least one line of weakness substantially overlap with said corresponding tear tape (20).
8. The container according to any of the previous claims, characterised in that an access point at an end of said tear tape (20) is provided on at least one of said lid and/or bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15). 9. The container according to claim 8, characterised in that said access point is formed by at least two slits in said lid and/or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15), wherein each side of said tear tape at said access point is provided with at least one of said at least two slits, such that a simplified commencement of tearing of said lid and/or bottom segment (8,
9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) is provided.
10. The container according to any of the previous claims, characterised in that a single continuous tear tape (20) is secured across all of said lid or bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15).
1 1 . The container according to any of claims 1 - 9, characterised in that each lid and/or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) is provided with a separate piece of tear tape (20). 12. The container according to any of the previous claims, characterised in that said tear tape (20) is secured to said lid and/or bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 ,
12, 13, 14, 15) only, and said side walls (3, 4, 5, 6) are free from tear tape (20). 13. The container according to any of the previous claims, characterised in that said container (1 ) is formed by folding a flat container blank (19), which comprises a longitudinal centre panel (24) forming said four side walls (3, 4, 5, 6), a longitudinal lid panel (25) forming said lid segments (12,
13, 14, 15), and a longitudinal bottom panel (26) forming said bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 ), wherein said tear tape (20) is attached to said lid and/or bottom panels (26, 26).
14. A container blank (19) adapted to be folded to form a container (1 ) having in closed state a bottom (2), four side walls (3, 4, 5, 6), and a lid (7), wherein said container blank (19) comprising a longitudinal centre panel (24) forming said four side walls (3, 4, 5, 6), a longitudinal lid panel (25) forming said lid segments (12, 13, 14, 15), and a longitudinal bottom panel (26) forming said bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 ), and each bottom and lid segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) being connected to one of said side walls (3, 4, 5, 6) via a separate fold line (16, 17), wherein said container blank (19) further comprising tear tape (20) for opening of said container (1 ), characterised in that said tear tape (20) is secured to said lid segments and/or said bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15), and said tear tape (20) of any lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) being arranged close to said fold line (16, 17) associated with said lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15).
15. Method for opening a container (1 ) comprising in a closed state a bottom (2), four side walls (3, 4, 5, 6), and a lid (7), wherein said bottom (2) comprises at least partially overlapping bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 ), said lid (7) comprises at least partially overlapping lid segments (12, 13, 14, 15), and each bottom and lid segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) being connected to one of said side walls (8, 9, 10, 1 1 ) via a separate fold line (16, 17), wherein said container (1 ) further comprising tear tape (20) for opening of said container (1 ), said tear tape (20) being secured to said lid segments and/or said bottom segments (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15), and said tear tape (20) of any lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15) being arranged close to said fold line (16, 17) associated with said lid or bottom segment (8, 9, 10, 1 1 , 12, 13, 14, 15), the method comprising the step of pulling an end of said tear tape (20) to at least partially separate said lid or bottom (2, 7) from said side walls (3, 4, 5, 6), such that an at least partially separated lid and/or bottom region is formed, wherein said at least partially separated lid and/or bottom region may form a flexible flap (52) that provides access to the content of said container (1 ), as well as a reclosable opening in said container (1 ).
