Abstract

The invention provides a heat storage system for storing solar heat, the system including a subterranean heat storage (2') for storing heat at temperatures above 800 ˚C, the subterranean heat storage comprising sand or a salt, a collector structure (8') being placed on or above the ground, the collector structure (8') comprising a plurality of converging lenses (10') for concentrating solar radiation (12), an absorber body (6) positioned beneath the collector structure (8') so as to receive said solar radiation (12) concentrated by said plurality of converging lenses and be heated by said solar radiation, and a plurality of solid material heat conductors (4') for transferring heat from the absorber body (6') to the subterranean heat storage (2'). A method of storing solar heat is also provided.
