Description

TURN SIGNAL LAMP MOUNTING FOR A MOTORCYCLE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a turn signal lamp to be mounted on the body cover of a motorcycle particularly improved turn signal lamp along with body cover combination for motorcycle.
DISCUSSION OF PRIOR ART
In known motorcycles the turn signal lamp is always a separate part and it is more delicate to assemble and handle. It is not known to use the turn signal lamp provided in the front portion of a motorcycle as a structural part.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved turn signal lamp, which will act as a structural part and when integrated with the body cover will improve the aesthetic looks of the motorcycle.

Any known motorcycle, as illustrated in Fig. 1, can be divided into three major portions, the front portion F, the middle portion M and the rear/tail portion R. The front portion F comprises of the steering, front wheel with necessary brakes 1, front suspension 2, fender 3, and side cover 4; the middle portion M comprises of the step through portion 5, rider seat 6, stand 7, engine 8, gear shift lever 9 etc; and the rear/tail portion R comprises of petrol tank 10, swinging arm 11, back wheel and suspension 12 and rear fender 13.
Step through motorcycles are fitted with body panels or covers generally made up of engineering plastics and are used to hide the frame and the structural parts of the vehicle. They cover the side portion, rear portion and the handle bar. They also accommodate lamps viz the head lamp, tail lamp, position lamp, turn signal indicators and speedometer. The head lamp and speedometer console along with front and rear covers are fitted with handlebars.
Leg shields, side covers and rear fender are fitted on to the frame with interconnecting snap fittings. Front fender is fitted on front fork independently. The leg shield and the side covers are further divided into left and right sides. The central portion is covered by center covers fitted with the side covers of left and right. The portion above front wheel and below handle bar is covered by leg shield upper and lower, which may house the turn signal lamps.
Rear fender is fitted below the seat. The turn signal lamp is mounted on a body cover of the motorcycle. In assembling such a motorcycle, especially the body cover, there are many sub assemblies and these are independently mounted onto the frame at different locations. This type of independent mountings of sub assemblies of body cover on to the frame results in gaps between mating parts, increase in cost of the assembling, and complication of rework during assembly for reducing gaps which takes more time for reassembly and results in productivity losses. This invention will now be described with reference to the embodiments in Figs. 2 to 5.
The motorcycle consists of two turn signal indicators 14 and 23 on either sides of the step through motorcycle. Fig. 3 illustrates the turn signal lamp 14 of the present invention comprising a lamp housing for housing the necessary lamp including a transparent lens with five mounting means. The mounting means 15 and 16 is used to connect the TSL to the leg shield upper 19 and another mounting means 17 also known as the locater is used to connect the TSL to the cover main pipe center upper 19'. The TSL acts as a structural member connecting the leg shield upper 19 to the cover frame head 22. It is also provided with two mounting means A and B, wherein A is connected to the cover main pipe center upper 19' by bracket and B is connected to the cover frame head 22. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate the turn signal lamp 14 duly assembled on the leg shield upper 19 using the mounting means 15 and 16. The leg shield upper 19 is provided with corresponding locating lugs (not shown in the drawings).
Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate the turn signal lamp duly mounted along with the cover frame head 22 and leg shield upper 19. Fig. 6 illustrates front cover head assembly structure coupling, mounting bracket 21, cover frame head 22, turn signal indicators 14, 23 and leg shields 19, 25 that is a cover portion of any motorcycle. The structural member can have a relatively low number of components, improved rigidity, and/or improved overall strength. The structural member can have a relatively low cost and simple structure.
The front cover head assembly comprises of a bracket bent in a shape of L with three holes 26, 27, 28 respectively at one end and three holes 29, 30, 31 respectively at another end for receiving the corresponding locking part to be mounted on the frame head; wherein cover frame head 22 is mounted on the said bracket through mounting holes 28,
31 and a right turn signal lamp (indicator) 23 is coupled to the right end of the bracket and the left turn signal lamp (indicator) 14 is coupled to the left end of the bracket through mounting holes 27, 30. Further a front shield or leg shield each on right and left side (19, 25), which extend from the lower front portion of the vehicle to cover front portion of the vehicle being mounted on the said bracket through mounting holes 26 and 29.
Though this invention has been illustrated with reference to left side of a motorcycle, the arrangement on the right side will be identical except required modification regarding the placement of mounting means, etc.
