Abstract
The invention provides for a locking device (10) for a container, including a first member (12) being releasably receivable by at least a part of an opening mechanism of a container, wherein the opening mechanism of the container includes sliding doors and a sliding mechanism, the sliding mechanism including a rail and a groove shaped and configured to receive at least a part of a sliding door of the container when the sliding door is displaced horizontally from its closed position to its open sliding position; a second member (14) releasably attachable to the first member (12) and shaped and dimensioned to releasably engage at least a part of the container and/or the opening mechanism of the container, thereby facilitating the attachment of the locking device (10) to the container; an attachment means (16) for releasably attaching the first member (12) to a second member (14); securing means (18) for securing the first member (12) relative the second member (14); and wherein the first member (12) and the second member (14), when engaging me sliding mechanism of the container and/or the container, assist in inhibiting the horizontal displacement of the door of the container from, its closed position to an open sliding position, thereby assisting in minimizing the unauthorised entry of the container.
Description
A LOCKING DEVICE Field of the invention
The invention is in the field of locking devices, specifically a locking device used in the cargo container industry.
Background to the invention
The inventor believes there is a need for a locking device in the cargo container industry to prevent the loss of goods being transported by cargo containers.
Goods are removed from containers in many different ways, the easiest being through the opening or unlocking of the container's own closing mechanism.
The inventor believes a need exists for a container lock that will aid in securing a container's own locking mechanism.
Summary of the invention
According to an aspect of the invention there is provided a locking device for a container, said locking device including: a first member being releasably receivable by at least a part of an opening mechanism of a container, wherein the opening mechanism of the container includes sliding doors and a sliding mechanism, the sliding mechanism including a rail and a groove shaped and configured to receive at least a part of a sliding door of the container when the sliding door is displaced horizontally from its closed position to its open sliding position; a second member releasably attachable to the first member and shaped and dimensioned to releasably engage at least a part of the container and/or the opening mechanism of the container, thereby facilitating the attachment of the locking device to the container; an attachment means for releasably attaching the first member to a second member; securing means for securing the first member relative the second member; and wherein the first member and the second member, when engaging the sliding mechanism of the container and/or the container, assist in inhibiting the horizontal displacement of the door of the container from its closed position to an open sliding position, thereby assisting in minimizing the unauthorised entry of the container.
The first member may include a base member and a support member.
The base member and the support member may be angled at 90° relative each other.
The base member may be shaped and dimensioned to be received by the groove of the sliding mechanism of the opening mechanism of the container.
The support member may be shaped and dimensioned to be received by the sliding mechanism of the opening mechanism of the container.
The support member may be shaped and dimensioned to be received by at least a part of the sliding doors of the container.
The support member may be shaped and dimensioned to be received by a recess defined by the closed container doors.
The first member may include supporting and/or strengthening elements.
The supporting and/or strengthening elements made the configured to assist in deterring access to the locking device when in use.
The first member may assist in deterring the horizontal displacement of the container doors from a closed position to an opening sliding position.
The first member may provide the function of a stopper, wherein the stopper may assist in deterring the horizontal displacement of the container doors from a closed position to an opening sliding position.
The second member may be in the form and shape of a bracket. The second member may be in the form and shape of a U-bracket.
The second member may be shaped and dimensioned to engage an aspect of the sliding mechanism.
The second member may be shaped and dimensioned to engage an undersurface of the sliding mechanism.
The second member may be shaped and dimensioned to engage an aspect of the first member.
The second member may define an aperture for receiving at least a part of the attachment means there through.
The second member may include supporting and/or strengthening elements.
The supporting and/or strengthening elements may be configured to assist in deterring access to the locking device when in use.
The attachment means may be in the form of a shank. The shank may be attached to the first member. The shank may be integral the first member. The shank may be generally elongate.
The shank may be a generally cylindrical elongate and may include a tapered end.
The shank may include a thread and may include a first threaded section and a second counter-threaded section. The first threaded section may include a larger diameter relative the second counter-threaded section.
The securing means may be in the form of a nut. The securing means may include a plurality of nuts.
The securing means may typically include two nuts, a first nut and a second nut.
The nuts may be shaped and dimensioned to receive the shank.
The first nut may have a larger bore diameter relative the second nut bore diameter.
The first nut may include a thread and the second nut may include a counter-thread.
The first nut may be shaped and dimensioned to engage with the first threaded section of the shank and the second nut may be shaped and dimensioned to engage with the second threaded section of the shank.
Typically, the first nut is advanced along the threaded portion of the shank to an engaged position adjacent the second member of the locking device.
Advancement of the second nut along the shank towards the engaged position of the first nut may discourage removal of the first nut away from the engaged position adjacent the second member of the locking device.
The first nut may define further apertures for receiving a retaining pin. At least one of the further apertures may be threaded.
The second nut may define further apertures for receiving a retaining pin. At least one of the further apertures may be threaded.
The retaining pin may be any one or more from the group of a screw, bolt, dowel pins, castellated nut and cotter pin arrangement and the like.
The second nut may define an aperture for receiving further retaining means.
The further retaining means may be in the form of a security seal.

Figure 1 is a drawing of a side view of the locking device; Figure 2 shows a representation of a plan view of the locking device; Figure 3 is a drawing of end view of the first member of the locking device; and

In the drawings, reference numeral 10 generally refers to a locking device in accordance with the invention.
A locking device 10 for a container, said locking device 10 including a first member 12 being releasably receivable by at least a part of an opening mechanism (not shown) of a container (not shown), wherein the opening mechanism of the container includes sliding doors and a sliding mechanism, the sliding mechanism including a rail and a groove (not shown) shaped and configured to receive at least a part of a sliding door of the container when the sliding door is displaced horizontally from its closed position to its open sliding position. A second member 14 releasably attachable to the first member 12 and shaped and dimensioned to releasably engage at least a part of the container and/or the opening mechanism of the container, thereby facilitating the attachment of the locking device to the container; an attachment means 16 for releasably attaching the first member 12 to a second member 14; securing means 18 for securing the first member 12 relative the second member 14; and wherein the first member 12 and the second member 14, when engaging the sliding mechanism of the container and/or the container, assist in inhibiting the horizontal displacement of the door of the container from its closed position to an open sliding position, thereby assisting in minimizing the unauthorised entry of the container.
The first member 12 may include a base member 20 and a support member 22 that are angled at 90° 24 relative each other.
The base member 20 is shaped and dimensioned to be received by the groove of the sliding mechanism of the opening mechanism of the container.
The support member 22 is shaped and dimensioned to be received by either a part of the sliding mechanism of the opening mechanism of the container or by at least a part of the sliding doors of the container.
In an embodiment of the invention, the support member 22 is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a recess defined by the closed container doors (not shown).
The first member 12 includes supporting 26 and/or strengthening 28 elements that are configured to assist in deterring access to the locking device 10 when in use.
When in use, the first member 12 has the function of a stopper and therefore assists in deterring the horizontal displacement of the container doors from a closed position to an opening sliding position.
The second member 14 is in the form and shape of a U-bracket and is shaped and dimensioned to engage an aspect of the sliding mechanism (not shown).
It is to be appreciated from this specification that in an embodiment of the invention, the second member 14 is shaped and dimensioned to engage and/or abut an undersurface of the sliding mechanism and an aspect of the first member 12.
The second member 14 defines an aperture 30 for receiving at least a part of the attachment means 16 there through.
The second member 14 includes supporting 32 and/or strengthening 34 elements that are configured to assist in deterring access to the locking device 10 when in use.
The attachment means 16 is in the form of a shank 36, is attached to the first member 12 and is a generally cylindrical elongate that includes a tapered end 38.
The shank 36 includes a thread 40 includes a first threaded section 42 and a second counter-threaded section 44. The first threaded section 42 has a larger diameter relative the second counter-threaded section 44.
The securing means 46 is in the form of a plurality of nuts 48 that are shaped and dimensioned to receive the shank 36.
A first nut 50 has a larger bore diameter relative the second nut bore diameter. The first nut 50 and the second nut 52 include a counter-thread.
The first nut 50 is shaped and dimensioned to engage with the first threaded section 42 of the shank 36 and the second nut 52 is shaped and dimensioned to engage with the second threaded section 44 of the shank 36.
Typically, the first nut 50 is advanced along the threaded portion 42 of the shank 36 to an engaged position adjacent the second member 14 of the locking device 10.
Advancement of the second nut 52 along the shank 36 towards the engaged position of the first nut 50 discourages removal of the first nut 50 away from the engaged position adjacent the second member 14 of the locking device 10.
The first nut 50 defines further apertures 54 for receiving a retaining pin (not shown). At least one of the further apertures 54 is threaded.
The second nut 52 also defines further apertures 56 for receiving a retaining pin. At least one of the further apertures 56 may be threaded.
It is to be appreciated from this specification that the retaining pin may be any one or more from the group of a screw, bolt, dowel pins, castellated nut and cotter pin arrangement and the like.
In an embodiment not shown in the drawings, the second nut 52 defines aperture for receiving further retaining means that is typically in the form of a security seal (not shown).
Claims
1. A locking device for a container, said locking device including: a first member being releasably receivable by at least a part of an opening mechanism of a container, wherein the opening mechanism of the container includes sliding doors and a sliding mechanism, the sliding mechanism including a rail and a groove shaped and configured to receive at least a part of a sliding door of the container when the sliding door is displaced horizontally from its closed position to its open sliding position; a second member releasably attachable to the first member and shaped and dimensioned to releasably engage at least a part of the container and/or the opening mechanism of the container, thereby facilitating the attachment of the locking device to the container; an attachment means for releasably attaching the first member to a second member; and a securing means for securing the first member relative the second member; and wherein the first member and the second member, when engaging the sliding mechanism of the container and/or the container, assist in inhibiting the horizontal displacement of the door of the container from its closed position to an open sliding position, thereby assisting in minimizing the unauthorised entry of the container.
2. A locking device for a container as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first member includes a base member and a support member substantially right angled in relation to each other.
3. A locking device for a container as claimed in claim 2, wherein the base member is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a part of the sliding mechanism of the opening mechanism of the container.
4. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 3, wherein the support member is shaped and dimensioned to be received by at least a part of the sliding mechanism of the opening mechanism of the container.
5. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein the support member is shaped and dimensioned to be received by at least a part of the sliding doors of the container.
6. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 5, wherein the support member is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a recess defined by the closed container doors.
7. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the first member includes supporting and/or strengthening elements, configured to assist in deterring access to the locking device when in use.
8. A locking device for a container as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the first member is a stopper and assists in deterring the horizontal displacement of the container doors from a closed position to an opening sliding position.
9. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the second member is a U-bracket.
10. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the second member is shaped and dimensioned to engage at least a facet of the sliding mechanism.
11. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the second member is shaped and dimensioned to engage an undersurface of the sliding mechanism and an aspect of the first member.
12. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the second member is shaped and dimensioned to abut an undersurface of the sliding mechanism and an aspect of the first member.
13. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the second member defines an aperture for receiving at least a part of the attachment means there through.
14. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the second member includes supporting and/or strengthening elements configured to assist in deterring access to the locking device when in use.
15. A locking device for a container as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the attachment means is in the form of a shank.
16. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the attachment means is attached to the first member.
17. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the attachment means is integral the first member.
18. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the attachment means is a generally cylindrical elongate that includes a tapered end.
19. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of claims 15 to 18, wherein the shank includes the thread; including a first threaded section and a second counter-threaded section and wherein the first threaded section has a larger diameter relative the second counter-threaded section.
20. A locking device for a container as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the securing means is in the form of a plurality of nuts that are shaped and dimensioned to receive the shank.
21. A locking device for a container as claimed in claim 20, wherein a first nut has a larger bore diameter relative a second nut bore diameter, the first nut including a thread and the second nut include a counter-thread.
22. A locking device for a container as claimed in claims 21 , wherein the first nut is shaped and dimensioned to engage with the first threaded section of the shank and the second nut is shaped and dimensioned to engage with the second threaded section of the shank.
23. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of claims 21 to 22, wherein the first nut is advanced along the threaded portion of the shank to an engaged position adjacent the second member of the locking device.
24. A locking device for a container as claimed in 23, wherein the advancement of the second nut along the shank towards the engaged position of the first nut discourages removal of the first nut away from the engaged position adjacent the second member of the locking device.
25. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of claims 21 to 24, wherein the first nut defines further apertures for receiving a retaining pin and at least one of the further apertures is threaded.
26. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of claims 21 to 25, wherein the second nut also defines further apertures for receiving a retaining pin and at least one of the further apertures may be threaded.
27. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of claims 25 to 26, wherein the retaining pin is any one or more from the group of a screw, bolt, dowel pins, castellated nut and cotter pin arrangement and the like.
28. A locking device for a container as claimed in any one of claims 26 to 27, wherein the second nut defines an aperture for receiving further retaining means that is typically in the form of a security seal.
29. A new locking device substantially as described and illustrated herein.
30. A locking device as claimed in claim 1 , substantially as herein described and illustrated.
