Description

Arrangement in Connection with a Traffic Sign and a Warning System for Motorists
The invention relates to an arrangement in connection with a traffic sign wherein a panel part of the traffic sign comprises a lamp with the help of which the information surface of the panel part can be lit, an electrical connection or a power source, such as an accumulator and a control unit for controlling the functions. For example a unit attached to the traffic sign post belongs to the warning system for the motorists to which unit a sensor belongs in order to recognize such a pedestrian who is about to enter a pedestrian crossing and one or several light sources and an arrangement for starting the light source to be a blinking warning light further belong to the warning system.
Previously a recognition of a person who is approaching a traffic sign post, such as a post equipped with a sign for a pedestrian crossing is known from a utility model registration no 7992 in which case after the recognition a control center in connection with the traffic sign switches the warning light located at the stick of the sign on and makes it send warning light towards the vehicles that are on the road. There is alternatively a switch at the stick of the traffic sign from which switch the user of the pedestrian crossing can also switch the mentioned warning light on himself.
Also speed limit signs that are activated with a solar panel and a radar are known, such as for example a traffic sign known with a trade name SAS 600 Solar Led. In this solution the sign is lit with Led-lamps in such a case where the arriving vehicle is recognized to arrive with overspeed. The lighting of the sign is strong and with that it is wanted that the driver pays his attention to the speed limit sign.
Especially the signs for a pedestrian crossing have such a colour and size class that it is not always easy to detect them. An appearance of a pedestrian at the side of a driveway does not mean that there would be a pedestrian crossing for crossing the road. Therefore the motorist should notice both the pedestrian and the sign for a pedestrian crossing in which case there would probably be the case that there might be a pedestrian crossing the driveway. For improving the visibility of the sign for a pedestrian crossing and at the same time the safety of a pedestrian a new arrangement in connection with the traffic sign for a pedestrian crossing has been developed of which it is characteristic that a recognition device belongs to the traffic sign for recognition of a person or a vehicle nearing from a distance in which case on account of the recognition the control unit is adjusted to switch the lighting on in order to lighten the information surface.
It is characteristic for the warning system of the motorists in which system the direction of a person who starts to cross the pedestrian crossing is recognized that the system starts one or several units to send a blinking warning light in direction of the driveway.
The advantage of the invention is that in relation to other warning signs a relatively colourless and more compact sign for a pedestrian crossing becomes more detectable. Due to the invention on a two-way driveway also the signs that are at the both sides of the road become lit at the same time and they will be seen better. The detection of them can be boosted also with the blinking of the lighting. The current consumption of the lighting by using LED-lamps is light and with the help of a solar panel, a photoelectric element or a wind generator located in connection with the sign one can manage the lighting of the sign because the lighting becomes switched on only with the help of a sensor and has a regulated endurance.
The advantage of the warning system for the motorists is that only such a direction used by a pedestrian starts the warning lights in which direction the pedestrian is surely about to enter the pedestrian crossing.
In the following the invention is described more detailed by referring to the accompanying drawing in which
Figure 1 shows a traffic sign solution for a pedestrian crossing with the components apart.
Figure 2 shows a traffic sign for a pedestrian crossing and its stick part.
Figure 3 shows a warning system for the motorists regarding the pedestrians coming to a pedestrian crossing and moving there.
hi the figure 1 there is a traffic sign solution for a pedestrian crossing to which a back plate 5 belongs in connection of which there is an accumulator 6 as a power source and a control center 12 located in the same casing. Inside the edges of the back plate 5 a reflecting sheet 7 showing a sign for a pedestrian crossing is installed immediately said sheet also has its own stiffening back plate. The sheet is either attached to it or painted or printed in which case an information surface can be achieved. Further a frame 8 belongs to the solution to which frame in one embodiment LED-lamps 10 are attached in such a way that they lighten the reflecting sign for a pedestrian crossing while being located at the edges. LED-lamps 10 comprise a lens that disperses light in such a way that it spreads more evenly on the surface of the sign. When the sign is reflecting, even a minor light is enough to improve the visibility of the sign, hi this case a transparent, curved plate 9 is located outermost which plate can have several features.
LED-lamps 10 can be located in such a way that they have been pressed closed at the edge of the plate 9 in which case the light from them comes inside the plate 9 and circulates there and becomes free out of the side of the plate 9. The light can be made to become free out of the inner part of the plate mainly towards the sign if small cuts are made onto the surface of the interior of the plate. The cuts refract the light out from inside the plate 9.
One possibility is that there is a photoelectric sheet on the surface of the plate 9 in which case the plate 9 functions as a solar panel with the help of it and also during the dark time when the lights of the car hit the sheet, it transfers the light into electricity, hi connection with the traffic sign the solar panel can be located separately elsewhere too, such as on top of the traffic sign.
Further the plate 9 can function as a lamp if for example a lamp in a sheet form, such as an electroluminescent sheet, plasma or a liquid chrystal sheet or another generated shimmer light is attached to it. With these the lighting is directed from the plate 8 onto the surface of the sign 7.
hi the figure 2 a traffic sign that expresses the existence of a pedestrian crossing comprising a stick 1 is shown, comprising a unit 3 in the stick that possibly has its own power source or an electrical connection is directed there. The unit 3 has a sensor 4 that detects such an arriving pedestrian who starts to cross the pedestrian crossing. On account of a detection the unit sends for example a wireless signal both to its own traffic sign 11 located in this stick and to the corresponding sign for a pedestrian crossing 11 located at the other side of the road. The lighting becomes switched on for lighting of the both signs 11 controlled by signals. The lighting time can be adjusted from the control unit 3 and the lighting can be adjusted to be for example blinking, too. The lighting time is adjusted according to the width of the driveway to be for example 20 s or even 1 min.
There is a pecu switch in the unit 3 said switch can be adjusted to switch the lighting on only after certain twilight stage - if wanted.
Various lighting solutions can be used to lighten a traffic sign in the solution according to the invention. The shown embodiments are just exemplary solutions. In a more simple embodiment of the traffic sign the frame 8 and the plate 9 are missing. The lighting of the sign can most advantageously be organized from above it by directing the light beams towards the surface 7 while using the known lamps.
A driveway 14 is shown in the figure 3, pedestrian roads 13 at its both sides and a pedestrian crossing that is adjusted to cross the driveway 14. The units 3 according to the invention (figure 2) are located slightly at the front side of the pedestrian crossing in direction of the driveway 14 said units are most advantageously at the stick of the traffic signs that indicate the pedestrian crossing. Sensors 4 recognizing the pedestrians or other traffic belong to the units 3 said sensors recognize movement in the sector area 15 opening for the sensor. Lights sending a warning light in direction of the driveway also belong in this case to the units 3.
A movement recognition of the sensors 4 most advantageously occurring with a radar principle is processed in the processing program of a recognition signal belonging to the unit 3. The program detects if the pedestrian has moved to the sector area while coming inside the area towards the pedestrian crossing for example 0,5 meter. If such a transposition is detected, the program starts the warning blinker lights in the units 3 in direction of the driveway 15. The unit 3 that initiated the activation sends for example by radio a signal to the unit 3 that is located at the other end of the pedestrian crossing the blinker of which unit also starts. The units 3 in question function thus as pairs.
Sectors 15 are formed in such a way that the recognition happens before the pedestrian has reached the pedestrian crossing. The warning blinker lights send blue and/or white blinking light.
The functioning of the sensors 4 of the units 3 is time sliced to occur at a certain frequence, such as every 50 ms in order to reduce the current consumption. The movement recognition of the sensors is fast, almost without delay so that the recognition time related to the periods Is also very short. From the detections of the sensor a situation picture regarding the surrounding traffic can be achieved, hi a broader embodiment according to the invention also a traffic count can be performed with the help of the units 3 in which case the recognition program of the unit 3 separates the objects moving at the driveway 14, moving at the pedestrian crossing and moving at the pedestrian road 13 from each other.
The arrangement can also be located in connection with the traffic lights if they in the above-mentioned point are regularly or often switched off.
