  • the method involves providing a package comprising an exterior panel having a window and an internal cavity, providing a removable element underlying the window, inserting a product into the internal cavity and applying product specific indicia through the window onto the removable element.
  • product specific indicia are applied subsequent to forming the package is extremely beneficial from a manufacturing perspective since it can take place at a late stage in the packaging procedure and even after the package has been sealed. This may save time during manufacture and thus, reduce final costs. It can also assist in reducing errors.
  • the method further comprises forming the package by folding a preformed blank of card material as described above.
  • the card material may be folded to form a package at the point of packaging or may be supplied ready formed as a flat pack package.
  • the indicia are applied by use of an inkjet printing device.
  • Other alternative printing devices may also be used including ink and laser based systems and the skilled person will be aware of further methods of application that may be used according to the circumstances.
  • the method further comprises integrally forming the removable element with an interior panel of the package. This may be achieved by laminating the removable element to the interior panel during manufacture of the blank. Alternatively, the removable element may be applied in the form of a releasable adhesive sticker. The removable element may also be integrally formed by providing perforations or other lines of weakness to separate it from the remainder of the package. Such methods may be used to form stickers, user cards and the like.
  • the package comprises a plurality of windows and a plurality of removable elements is provided, each underlying a respective window.
  • the method may comprise applying product specific indicia through the windows onto each removable element. Further windows may be provided allowing printing of indicia or other markings directly onto the product too.
  • the product may also carry a removable element such as a sticker that may be removed after opening of the package.
  • the invention also relates to a blank for forming the above described package.
  • the blank comprises the external and internal panels and the removal elements having the areas where the indicia can be printed.
  • the blank may be provided with suitable crease lines, perforations and lines of weakness to assist folding and use.
  • the blank comprises a high quality card material, in particular provided on both surfaces with a polymer coating.
  • the polymer coating increases the longevity of a subsequently separated removable element, in particular for a user card that may be carried for periods of three years or more. It will however also be understood that the two-sided polymer coating may alternatively be provided only in those regions required for the user- card.
  • the blank material is more than 0.35 mm thick, more preferably, around 0.42 mm in thickness.

  • the blank 1 is formed of 0.42 mm thickness, high quality card comprising a bleached chemical pulp three layer paperboard base, coated on both sides with a glossy polymer coating.

  • the user card 18 and stickers 20 are provided on a separable section 26 of the internal panel 4.
  • This section 26 is bounded by a perforation line 16 that follows the crease line 6 between the internal panel 4 and the glue tab 14 and which crosses the internal panel 4 at a short distance from the second side panel 2D.
  • the region of internal panel 4 between the perforation line 16 and the second side panel 2D forms a glue strip 28 as will be described further below.
  • a line of weakness 15 is formed across separable section 26 between the user card 18 and the stickers 20.
  • At a bottom edge 30 of the section 26 is located a pull zone 32.
  • the blank 1 On its rear panel 2 A, the blank 1 is provided with a series of three apertures or windows 34. The windows 34 are aligned with one another and also with a print zone 36.
  • Print zone 36 comprises a blank region of treated surface which is susceptible to printing by a regular inkjet printer without smudging or running.
  • a pull tab 40 Also provided at a bottom edge 38 of the rear panel 2A is a pull tab 40. Pull tab 40 is delineated from the remainder of the rear panel 2 A by a perforation 42.
  • the blank 1 is delivered in its flat state to an assembly station (not shown) where it is assembled by conventional methods.
  • Adhesive is applied to the glue tab 14, the glue strip 28 and the pull zone 32.
  • the adhesive may be any adhesive available to the skilled person and suitable for adequately joining the facing polymer coated surfaces of the blank 1.
  • the panels 2, 4 are then folded with respect to one another along crease lines 6 to form a square section tube with the rear panel 2 A overlying the internal panel 4. Pressure is exerted on the surfaces of the rear panel 2A and the first side panel 2B to join the glued components together.
  • the folded blank 1 may be packed flat for delivery or storage or may be further assembled by closure of the ears 8 and bottom closure 10.
  • FIG. 2 shows a partially completed package 100 assembled from the blank 1 as described above.
  • a medical product 102 in the form of a primary packaged ImplanonTM applicator loaded with a contraceptive implant has been inserted into the package 100, which is ready for closing of the top closure 12 and completion of the packaging procedure.
  • FIG. 3 shows the closed package 100 after it has passed through a printing station (not shown).
  • Product specific indicia 104 have been applied to the package 100 by an appropriate ink-jet printing device. More specifically, the indicia 104 have been applied to the user card 18 and stickers 20 by printing through the windows 34 of the rear panel 2A onto the printing fields 24. Additionally indicia 104 have been applied to the print zone 36. As the windows 34 and print zone 36 are aligned, printing of all indicia 104 may be easily achieved in a single pass of the printing device.
  • FIG. 4 shows the package 100 after opening by a user and removal of the removable section 26 carrying the user card 18 and stickers 20. Removal takes place by pulling on the pull tab 40 whereby the perforation 42 is broken. Since the pull tab 40 is adhered to the pull zone 32, the force is transmitted to the removable section 26 of the internal panel 4, which separates from the remainder of the package 100 along the perforation line 16. After the removable section 26 has been removed from the package 100, the user card 18 is broken away at the line of weakness 15 and the adhesive stickers 20 may be peeled off and affixed to the patient's records.

Abstract

Emballage (100) comprenant une pluralité de panneaux extérieurs (2) réciproquement repliés l’un par rapport à l’autre, pour former une cavité intérieure, destinée à contenir un produit, en particulier un médicament. Au moins un des panneaux extérieurs comprend une fenêtre (34), et un panneau interne formé d’un seul tenant (4) sous la fenêtre, le panneau interne comprenant des éléments amovibles (20) portant des marquages spécifiques au produit. L’invention concerne également un procédé d’impression de marquages spécifiques au produit sur les panneaux successifs pour former l’emballage.
