Abstract
High resolution detection precision is achieved without requiring complicated operation processing. The magnetic encoder has a GMR sensor (10) where magnets (M) magnetized with multiple poles and moving in a fixed direction and the element portions in GMR elements (R1-R4(R1'-R4')) divided into a plurality of pieces are arranged in the moving direction of the magnet (M) at predetermined interval smaller than the magnetization pitch of the magnet (M). The magnetic encoder also has an output variation detection circuit (20) for detecting an output voltage which varies stepwise depending on the number of divided element portions of the GMR elements (R1-R4(R1'-R4')) in the GMR sensor (10).
