Abstract

The present invention is directed to a transmissive type liquid crystal display device provided with elements of a light source (BL), a reflective type linear polarizing layer (Pr1), a birefringence layer (A), a light source side absorption type linear polarizing layer (P1), a liquid crystal cell (LC), and a viewing side linear polarizing layer (P2), wherein the elements are arranged in this order and the birefringence layer has a predetermined phase difference characteristic. In the transmissive type liquid crystal display device, because the leakage of oblique direction light is suppressed, the brightness of black is lowered. Further, the reduction of a front contrast due to a light distribution to the front direction can be suppressed.
