Abstract

An apparatus and method for converting acetic, butyric acids and other short chain carboxylic acids from the acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation process into their corresponding alkyl esters, which have a pleasant odor. Preferably, a strong acid and/or an immobilized lipase is used as a catalyst in a packed bed reactor. The produced esters remain in the butanol fuel as oxygenate agents or additives. A simplified separation and purification process for butanol fuel production results.
