Definitions

  • Ignition switch for motor vehicles and method of operating an ignition switch
  • the present invention relates to an ignition device for a vehicle engine comprising a key unit and a lock unit, and also a method for operating an ignition device.
  • Engine starting systems whereby a keycard is placed in an identification unit, followed by the engine being started by a separate starting key or a separate starting button, have recently been introduced.
  • Such ignition systems usually have the following states: ignition-off state in which the card has not yet been placed in the identification unit, ignition-neutral state in which the vehicle's radio is powered so that it can be listened to without switching on all the consumers, e.g. the driving lamps, ignition-on state in which starting of the engine is possible, and engine starting state in which the vehicle's engine is started by the starting key being turned or the starting button being pressed in.
  • a problem with the aforesaid engine starting systems with a card and a starting key or a card and a starting button is that starting the vehicle's engine involves the driver having to operate several different units, which is a burden, particularly on vehicles in which the engine has to be started and stopped many times during a working day, e.g. in goods delivery operations in built-up areas.
  • An example of an ignition device for vehicles is referred to in DE 198 53 075, in which a card is insertable to different distances in an electronically coded card identification device arranged in the vehicle whereby pushing the card in to the ignition-neutral position (I) unlocks an electronic starting lock, pushing the card in to the ignition-on position (II) switches on the ignition and subsequently pushing the card in to the engine starting position (III) starts the vehicle's engine, after which the card, when released, springs back to the ignition-on position (II). The engine is stopped by the card being pulled out to the ignition-neutral position.
  • a device having the characteristics that the ignition device comprises a lock unit in which a key unit is adapted to being inserted in an insertion direction in order to operate the ignition device, the key unit being further adapted to being able, when placed in the lock unit, to being rocked in an operating direction about an axis substantially transverse to said insertion direction in order to connect at least one ignition state of the vehicle's electrical system, affords the advantage of making it possible to provide a large number of different ignition states in which different consumers are connected so that those not needed at the time consume no current, thereby reducing power consumption through a driver being able to select appropriate ignition states as necessary.
