Abstract

A bearing device for a wheel, suitable as an axles unit for large-sized vehicles such as trucks and buses and capable of accurately detecting the rotation of wheels at all times because the relation between the positions of a magnetic encoder and a magnetic sensor does not change. The bearing device (1) for a wheel has a double-row rolling bearing (2) and a housing (7) for mounting an annular hub (34). To the inner periphery of the annular hub (34) is press-fitted an outer ring (4) of the rolling bearing (2). The magnetic encoder (17) for rotation detection is secured to the outer ring (4), prevented from falling out by a snap ring (15), installed in the inner periphery of the housing (7) or secured to an axial end of the housing (7). The inner peripheral surface of the housing (7) is formed in a stepped cylindrical surface having a press-fitting surface part (11a) into which the outer ring (4) is press-fitted and also having a small diameter surface part (11c) smaller in diameter than the press-fitting surface part (11a) continuing to the press-fitting surface part (11a) with a step part (11b) in between. The outer ring (4) press-fitted into the press-fitting surface part (11a) is laterally fastened by the step part (11b) and a fixing member (13) secured to the inner periphery of the housing (7).
