Abstract

An electrical heating element comprising an immersed casing with an electrical heating resistor therein, fixed to a first pin, a thermal fuse and a second pin for the connection to the power supply system, wherein the electrical heating resistor and the thermal fuse are connected by a connector, having a first and a second cylindrical metallic part joining the first pin to the thermal fuse and having a third central part joining the first part to the second part.

DESCRIPTION Field of the invention
The present invention relates to an electrical heating element with fuse, specifically to a heating element used for heating water in household appliances. State of the art
Heating elements, or simply heaters, incorporating electrical resistors inserted within a casing, generally immersed, are used in household appliances, e.g. dishwashers or washing machines. One of the problems of heating elements of this kind is overheating. The overheating of the heating element occurs, for example, due to either excessive operating time of the element without water or operation with the surface of the casing coated with lime scale after a period in which the heater was operated in contact with particularly hard water, without contemplating the use of other devices. It is well known that the presence of lime scale on heating resistors causes an overheating of the element which could lead to the breakdown of the element.
Thus, a solution to avoid this kind of problem is to provide for a thermal fuse which has the function of cutting off the electrical current in case of sudden overheating of the heating element.
It is known that a heating element with cylindrical-shape immersed casing, which contains the heating electrical resistor inside, is connected by means of a leg wire to a thermal fuse. The latter is connected in turn by means of a pin which has the function of connecting to the power supply system. These elements are arranged one after the other thus determining the length of the element.
A heating element of this type presents however some drawbacks such as an excessive resistance, due to the excessive total length of its components, which implies a slower heat transmission from the heating resistor to the thermal fuse and a lower operating sensitivity of the latter, due to the longer distance between fuse and heating resistor, with consequent larger dimensions and longer reaction times of the thermal fuse. Less reliability and a shorter working life thus derive. It is thus felt the need to make a heating element which allows to overcome the aforesaid drawbacks. Summary of the invention
It is the main object of the present invention to make a more compact, more reliable heating element whose working life is longer.
The present invention thus intends to reach such objects by making a heating element which, in accordance with claim 1 , comprises an immersed casing containing an electrical heating resistor therein, fixed to a first pin, a thermal fuse and a power supply system connecting element, wherein the electrical heating resistor and the thermal fuse are connected by electrical conductor means, characterised in that the electrical conductor means comprise a connector, having a first cylindrical end part electrically connected to the first pin, a second cylindrical end part electrically connected to the thermal fuse, the diameter of said second part being wider than that of the first part, and a third tapered fitting part between first and second part.
By arranging the various parts forming the heating element according to the invention, the total length is shortened by approximately 20%. In virtue of this, the heat is carried directly and more rapidly onto the fuse body through the specific connector. The intervention times of the thermal fuse are thus shorter and its distance from the source of heat is smaller. In virtue of the specific shape of the connector, the heating element is mechanically more robust, with fewer component parts as the connection between the thermal fuse body and the base of the source of heat is direct. The diameter of the heating element is also smaller, advantageously equal to approximately 6,5 mm.

Detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the invention Fig. 1 shows a heating element, globally indicated by numeral 1 , which comprises a cylindrical-shape immersed casing 2, although different shapes are possible. Element 1 is generally fixed to the wall of a container in which the liquid to be heated is contained, e.g. the tank of a washing machine.
Within casing 2, e.g. in the form of sheath or steel tube, there is arranged a heating electrical resistor 3, e.g. spiral-shaped, but obviously it can be made in other shapes. Resistor 3 is connected to a first pin 5, preferably formed by copper or iron. There is provided within casing 2 an electrically insulating material 6, e.g. magnesium oxide, which surrounds first pin 5 to fix it in a centred position integral with casing 2 itself. In addition to the electrical insulation function, material 6 performs the further function of transferring the heat outwards. At one of its ends, pin 5 is connected to an electrically conducting metal connector 10, preferably but not necessarily formed by copper.
Connector 10 advantageously consists of a first cylindrical part 7, longitudinally cleft to provide the cylindrical part with an elasticity which allows to secure cylindrical pin 5. Connector 10 further comprises a second cylindrical part 9, of larger diameter than that of first part 7. This second part 10 is also longitudinally cleft to provide it with an elastic securing capacity on a thermal fuse 1 1. The two cylindrical parts 7 and 9 of connector 10, thus provided with a certain radial elasticity, are joined by a third fitting part 8 having a solid surface obtained by rotating a right-angled trapezium about the side perpendicular to the bases, i.e. an essentially truncated-cone shape. In the preferred embodiment of connector 10 shown in figures 2a and 2b, this third part 8 has a half truncated-cone shape, corresponding to a 180° rotation of said right-angled trapezium. As shown in figures 3a and 3b, connector 10 may consists of a foil which in its open and flat shape comprises two flat rectangular surfaces joined by a further surface. In the example in Fig. 3a, this further surface is rectangular and the geometric configuration shown in Figures 2a and 2b is obtained by folding said foil. In the example in Fig. 3b, this further surface is trapezoidal and a third, essentially truncated-cone-shaped fitting part 8 is obtained by folding the foil. A material, such as for example a resin, which insulates connector 10 and keeps it fixed with respect to the structure of heating element, to avoid detachment, vibrations, etc., may be advantageously incorporated around cylindrical part 7 of connector 10. Thermal fuse 1 1 has a cylindrical shape and is in turn connected to a second pin 12 which connects to the power supply system, e.g. by means of electrical wires (not shown).
Within the casing, there is provided an insulating coating of plastic material or other suitable material, e.g. in the shape of a bush 13, over all or part of the surface.
An insulating socket 15 closing the casing is further provided. The space inside casing 2 comprised between pin 12, bushing 13 and socket 15 may be filled with sealing resin.

Claims

1. A heating element (1 ) comprising an immersed casing (2) containing an electrical heating resistor (3) therein, fixed to a first pin (5), a thermal fuse (1 1 ) and a power supply system connecting element (12), wherein the electrical heating resistor (3) and the thermal fuse (1 1 ) are connected by electrical conductor means, characterised in that the electrical conductor means comprise a connector (10), having a first cylindrical end part (7) electrically connected to the first pin (5), a second cylindrical end part (9) electrically connected to the thermal fuse (1 1 ), the diameter of said second part (9) being wider than that of the first part (7), and a third tapered fitting part (8) between first and second part.
2. A heating element according to claim 1 , wherein said third part (8) of the connector (10) has a solid surface obtained by rotating a right-angled trapezium about the side perpendicular to the bases.
3. A heating element according to claim 2, wherein said third part (8) has a truncated-cone shape.
4. A heating element according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the first cylindrical end part (7) and the second cylindrical end part (9) have a longitudinal cleft to give radial elasticity.
5. A heating element according to claim 4, wherein the connector (10) in its open and flat shape comprises two flat rectangular surfaces joined by a further rectangular or trapezoidal surface.
6. A heating element according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the immersed casing (2) is cylindrical.
7. A heating element according to any of the preceding claims, wherein said connection element (12) to the power supply system is a second pin.
