Abstract
A full face helmet including a frontal chin protection part (11 ) which can be separated from the main head protection shell (12) shaped like a jet helmet, by means of the release of coupling means. This allows a rapid conversion of the full face helmet into a jet type helmet.
Description
Convertible Full Face Helmet
This invention relates to an innovative helmet for motorcyclists, of the "full face" type, but easily convertible into a "jet" type.
In the field of helmets for motorcyclists the features of the so called "full face" helmets, which offer more safety and more protection from the air-stream and bad weather, are well known. However, in the city traffic and in summer the so called "jet" helmets are often preferred.
Therefore, the motorcyclists often purchase both types of helmet and choose in each case which one to wear. This solution is obviously not very practical. Further to the costs of two helmets, the motorcyclist is forced to make his choice before starting the trip, in order to avoid taking with him both helmets, even if the route or trip would be more conveniently travelled partly with one type of helmet and partly with the other type. For example, this is the case at a trip in summer with a section on the highway (where it is certainly preferable to use a full face helmet) and a visit in a town centre (where the jet helmet would undoubtedly be more comfort- able).
In the attempt to remedy to this problem, jet helmets have been proposed which have a frontal protection around the chin pivoted to the helmet in order to rotate upward, independently or (more often) together with the visor. This protection, when lowered, gives to the jet helmet a look similar to a full face helmet. However, the protection offered is only against the air-stream and bad weather, while the safety of the helmet against impacts remains essentially the one of a jet helmet. These helmets, therefore, cannot really replace a full face helmet.
Moreover, when the frontal protection is raised it offers resistance to the air- stream and puts the helmet off balance; this way the wearability of the helmet is
absolutely not the same as of a jet helmet, on the contrary the helmet is uncomfortable and tiring for the neck muscles. This kind of helmets, therefore, cannot even replace a real jet helmet.
The general object of this invention is to remedy the above mentioned disadvantages, supplying a full face helmet readily convertible into a jet helmet according to the present need.
In the light of said object, a full face helmet, according to the invention, has been developed having a frontal chin protection part which can be separated from the main head protection shell made in the shape of a jet helmet, releasing coupling means located on the two lateral inner end portions of said frontal chin protection part.
In order to further explain the innovative principles of this invention and its advantages in comparison to the prior art, an embodiment of the invention will be explained hereinafter by reference to the enclosed drawings. Therein:
- Fig. 1 represents a prospective lower view of a full face helmet made according to the invention;
- Fig. 2 represents a prospective view of the helmet of Fig. 1 converted into a jet type helmet;
- Fig. 3 represents the inner (back) side of a removable (detachable) element or detail of the helmet of Fig. 1 ;
- Fig. 4 represents an enlarged view of one coupling area of the element of Fig. 3;
- Fig. 5 represents a lengthwise section view of the coupling area of Fig. 4;
- Fig. 6 represents a view similar to the one of Fig. 4 but with the coupling device partially released;
- Fig. 7 represents a frontal perspective view of another conceivable version of the removable element of Fig. 3.
Referring to the figures, in Fig. 1 a full face helmet is represented, generally marked with reference number 10, made according to the principles of the present invention. To simplify the representation, in the figures the inner padding and the usual high density polystyrene shell are not represented. Said linings can easily be imagined by a person skilled in the art. The helmet shall also have well known throat straps to fasten the helmet.
The helmet 10 has a frontal or front chin protection part or element, indicated with 11 , which has been conceived in such a way as to be separable from a main head protection shell 12. The above mentioned straps shall be attached to the main shell, as indicated with 20 in Fig. 2.
On the inner sides 13 and 14 of the front chin protection part 11 , there are cou- pling means 15 and 16 which allow to removably couple the front chin protection part to the main shell.
In Fig. 2 the full face helmet is represented without the front part 11. In this condition, the main shell 12, made in the shape of a jet helmet, keeps a visor 17 (which in the full face version of Fig. 1 leans its lower edge on the protection part 11 , as in an ordinary full face helmet). The visor is pivoted on both sides by means of known devices 18. As it can be seen in Fig. 2, the helmet without the front part 11 is essentially a jet helmet.
In Fig. 3 the part 11 is represented from the inner side and without the lining. It is visible that an upper edge 19 is shaped to match with the visor 17.

It has been considered convenient that the coupling means 15, 16 shall include a toggle clutch 21 , 22 on each side of the front protection part 11.
Each toggle clutch 21 , 22 has a coupling hook 23, 24 which projects parallel to the inner wall of the main shell and can be manoeuvred through a lever 25, 26 to engage in a specific seat in the main shell and pull the front part against the main shell. The coupling hooks 23, 24 conveniently having wire bows each one pivoted to the respective manoeuvring lever.
In Fig. 4 the right side coupling means 16 are represented. The left side coupling means 17 are essentially mirror-inverted, thus, they are not hereby represented in detail.
In Fig. 1 and 4 the hooking seat for the clutch 22, shaped like a hook projecting toward the inside of the helmet, is indicated with 27.
Conveniently, the coupling means 15, 16 include coupling fins 28, 29 which protrude from each side of the front protection part 11 and siidingly engage in the pro- tection shell in correspondence with the edge where the front protection part and the main protection shell join, in order to prevent the shell and the frontal part to move cross-wise to the coupling hook 23, 24 direction.
As it can be seen in Fig. 4, the fins are conveniently alternated so that they can join both sides of the joining wall on the main shell 12.
As it can be better seen in the sectional view of Fig. 5, representing coupling mean 16, each toggle clutch conveniently comprises security-catch means 30 which can be released to oppose the manoeuvre of lever 25, 26 toward the re- lease position of the toggle clutch. In the representation, said security-catch means include an elastic clutch tooth 31 which passes through the manoeuvre
lever 25, 26 when it is in the lowered coupling position, so that the tooth can engage on the lever in correspondence of a step 32 and prevent its movement toward the upper release position. The clutch tooth 31 has a manoeuvre tip 33 which protrudes from lever 25, 26 so that the tooth can be manually pushed to- ward the release position of the lever (towards the left side in Fig. 5). As it can be seen in Fig. 6, once released the safety-catch means, the lever can be lifted and the bow hook can come off the corresponding seat in shell 12, so that the protection part 11 can be completely separated.
In Fig. 7 a further possible or conceivable embodiment of the front removable part is represented, indicated with 111. This part is similar to part 11 described above and it also comprises means for coupling to helmet including toggle clutches 121 , 122 and joining hooks 123, 124 similar to those of part 11. The part 111 has also frontal or front air vents 140, 141 , for example protected by grids or other shield elements, to increase the circulation of air in the helmet. Conveniently the removable parts 11 and 111 can both be supplied with the helmet, to be used alternatively according to the kind of ventilation desired. For example part 11 may be preferred in winter, while part 111 may be preferred in summer.
It is also possible to provide more front parts with air vents having different ventilation and bad weather protection features. For example the generous grids of Fig. 7 can be replaced by air vents having shaped baffles or mobile shutters to prevent the rain to get in.
It is now clear how the desired scopes have been attained, supplying a full face helmet which can be converted into an ordinary jet helmet by means of a quick manoeuvre.
It must be underlined that the full face helmet according to the invention is as strong as a traditional full face helmet, so strong that it has passed the strict ho- mologation tests for this kind of helmet.
Obviously, the above description of an application of the innovative principles of this invention is to be considered only as an example of said innovative principles and therefore not limiting the extension of the patent right hereby claimed.
For example the design of the helmet can be differed from the one represented, according to different tastes or specific manufacture or design requirements.
Claims
1. A full face helmet including a front chin protection part (11 ) which can be separated from a main head protection shell (12) shaped like a jet helmet, by means of the release of coupling means (15, 16) located on the two lateral inner end portions of said front chin protection part.
2. A full face helmet according to claim 1 , characterised in that the coupling means (15, 16) include a toggle clutch (21 , 22) on each lateral end portion of the frontal chin protection part (11 ).

A full face helmet according to claim 2, characterised in that each toggle clutch (21 , 22) has a coupling hook (23, 24) manoeuvred by a lever (25, 26) located on the lateral end portion of the frontal chin protection part (11) and project- ing parallel to the inner wall of the main protection shell to engage in a specific seat (27) in the main protection shell.

A full face helmet according to claim 3, characterised in that the coupling means include coupling fins (28, 29) which protrude from each side of the frontal protection part (11 ) and slidingly engage in the protection shell in correspondence with the edge (13, 14) where the front protection part and the main protection shell join, in order to prevent the shell and the frontal part to move cross-wise to the coupling hook direction.
5. A full face helmet according to claim 3, characterised in that the coupling hook includes a wire bow (23, 24) pivoted to the respective manoeuvring lever (25, 26).
6. A full face helmet according to claim 3, characterised in that the toggle clutch comprises security-catch means (30) which can be released to oppose the manoeuvre of lever (25, 26) toward the release position of the toggle clutch.

A full face helmet according to claim 6, characterised in that the security- catch means (30) includes of an elastic clutch tooth (31 ) which passes through the manoeuvre lever (25, 26), in the coupling position, so that the tooth can engage on the lever to prevent its movement toward the release position, the clutch tooth (31 ) has a manoeuvre tip (33) which protrudes from the lever (25, 26) so that the tooth can be manually pushed toward the release position of the lever (25, 26).
8. A full face helmet according to claim 6, characterised in that the helmet has at least two frontal chin protection parts (11 , 111) which can be alternatively mounted, each one with different ventilation features.
9. A full face helmet according to claim 8, characterised in that at least one frontal part (111 ) has air vents (140, 141 ) for the inside ventilation of the helmet.
