Description
Title: Method and means for lubricating pump hoses, pipes and systems prior to pumping concrete
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a novel method and a means therefor for lubricating pump hoses, pipes, and systems prior to pumping concrete.
Background of the Invention
For pumping fresh concrete, a concrete pump is used, said pump being able to move concrete over long distances by means of hoses and pipes. A concrete pump is typically used for major castings and building activities, where it can reach a large area from one and the same place.
A receiving vessel is located upstream of the pump, said vessel being in the form of a funnel or a vessel, whereto truck mixers can transfer their contents of fresh concrete. Concrete pumps of different sizes are available for different purposes. The largest pumps may have a reach of up to 52 meters and pump up to 160 m3 concrete per hour. However, this is rarely necessary, and it is most normal to use a smaller pump having a reach of 30 to 40 meters. Moreover, there are pumps allowing to pour concrete in locations with low ceiling space, so called critical headroom pumps.
It is know in the art to lubricate the inner surfaces of pumps and hoses, pipes etc. using a gravel concrete of the same strength class as the concrete to be pumped thereafter immediately prior to pumping fresh concrete. The object of the lubrication is to ensure that pumping can be carried out without undue delays due to blockages caused by the formation of gravel clusters etc. The gravel concrete for such a lubrication comprises about 0,5 m3 and is delivered separately or is placed at the top of the upper blades of the drum on top of the concrete product to be pumped. The gravel concrete is loaded into the vessel or funnel on the upstream side of the pump and pumped through hoses, pipes etc.
Excess material, i.e. the material not used as lubricant, is discarded or incorporated into the concrete, as described for state of the art procedures. The lubricant used in the art in the form of gravel concrete implies several use-related, environmental and economic disadvantages. Gravel concrete is difficult to em- ploy and causes environmental problems by the disposal thereof. When incorporating an excess of gravel concrete in the casting job, the gravel concrete will result in an inhomogeneous finished product after casting.
US 2005/0274294 A1 discloses the use of i.a. bentonite to improve the pumpa- bility when dry casting cementitious compositions, where bentonite is added in solid form and is used to increase the viscosity of the mixture to be cast.
US 2004/0198873 A1 discloses the use of for example solid bentonite as pumping aid to increase the viscosity during pumping of concrete mixtures.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that the use of a suitable amount of a clay described in greater detail below in slurry form for lubricating pump hoses, pipes, and systems prior to pumping concrete is able to completely replace the state of the art gravel concrete having said disadvantages. The economic ad- vantages include improved usage of the capacity of the concrete production unit, since it is no longer encumbered with having to produce gravel concrete. Furthermore, separate deliveries of gravel concrete by truck mixers ceases, for which reason, a special logistics is redundant in connection with concrete deliveries to the pump. At the same time, an easy and simple method is carried out, ensuring an effective lubrication of the pump hoses, pipes, and systems, while the amount of excess lubricating material is reduced by up to 98%. Moreover, each pump operator may lubricate his own material independently of others.
The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a novel method for lubricating pump hoses, pipes, and systems prior to pumping concrete as well as a means for using said method.
The object is achieved by the method and the means according to the invention.

In accordance with another embodiment of the means according to the invention, the clay is bentonite, in particular calcium bentonite.
The scope of the applicability of the invention will appear from the following de- tailed description. However, it is to be understood, that the detailed description and the specific examples, even though they state preferred embodiments of the invention, are only given by way of illustration, and various changes and
modifications within the scope of the invention will become apparent to the person skilled in the art when reading the detailed description.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The terms "lubrication", "lubricating" and "lubricate", as used herein, signify that pump hoses, pipes, and systems are being prepared by coating the inner surfaces thereof with the lubricant.
The term "lubricant", as used herein, signifies a means for said preparation of pump hoses, pipes, and systems prior to pumping fresh concrete.
The term "gravel concrete", as used herein, signifies a mixture of cement, water, and sand.
The term "truck mixer", as used herein, signifies a rotating concrete mixer mounted on a lorry. Typically, such a truck mixer transports about 6-9 m3 fresh concrete at a time.
The term "gravel clusters", as used herein, signifies an accumulation of coarse aggregates, which may block the transfer of concrete in pump hoses, pipes, and systems.
By the method according to the invention, one or more clays selected from the group consisting of smectite, vermiculite and chlorite, more preferably mont- morillonite and in particular a bentonite, especially calcium bentonite, are suspended in a suitable amount of water, and these slurries are stabilized during maturation at natural pH. The finished product is to have a viscosity ensuring a sufficient thickness of the lubricant layer on the inner surfaces of pump hoses, pipes, and systems, so that the layer exhibits the necessary robustness, while the slurry exhibits great stability, so that possible precitation after longer periods of standing is avoided. In order to achieve a slurry having both sufficient viscos-
2007/000245
ity and high stability, the used amount of dry solids of clay is 5-30, preferably 8- 20 and more preferably 10-14% by weight of dry solid.
The lubricant is a natural, environmentally neutral product added directly to the funnel, vessel or container of the concrete pump and is pumped through hoses etc. prior to using the concrete pump for pumping fresh concrete.
Example
24 kg natural calcium bentonite having a moisture content of about 50% is added to a 100 litre vessel equipped with a slow stirrer and supplied with 76 kg water. The mixture is stirred slowly for 26 hours, thus obtaining a stable slurry having a density at 2O0C of 1.07 ± 0.02 kg/I (according to DS/ISO 758). The dry solid content is 12.0 ± 1.0% (EN 480-8). Equivalent Na2O is < 0.20% (EN 480- 12). Water-soluble chloride (CP) is < 0.01% (DS/EN 1744-1). The pH value of the slurry appears to be 8.0 ± 1.0 (ISO 4316). During storage the slurry appears to be stable for at least 12 months at temperatures of +20C to +5O0C. The slurry is drawn off into e.g. 10 litre plastic canisters as a means for lubricating pump hoses, pipes, and systems prior to pumping fresh concrete. The amount of Iu- bricant used depends on the size of the pump and the length of the hose, but normally comprises about 10 kg and for extra pipe sections and hoses up to about 20 kg. Lubrication tests have shown that a durable (robust) lubricant layer is obtained.
The invention thus being described, it will be obvious that the same may be varied in many ways. Such variations are not to be regarded as a departure from the scope of the invention, and all such modifications as would be obvious to a person skilled in the art are intended to be included within the scope of the following claims.
