Description

Description
SELECTING METHOD FOR A BROADCASTING CHANNEL OF
THE DIGITAL TV
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates to a method of selecting a broadcast channel of a digital Television (TV) and, more particularly, to a method of selecting a broadcast channel of a digital TV, which enables a TV viewer to quickly and easily select a broadcast channel. Background Art
[2] As is well known, TV broadcasts are becoming diversified due to the development of communication technology and, thus, the number of TV broadcast channels from which a viewer must make a selection has increased. Accordingly, research into a method of enabling TV channels to be more easily and conveniently selected has been actively conducted.
[3] Conventionally, the viewer directly selects the broadcast channel that is desired to be selected by pressing the corresponding broadcast channel number through the manipulation of the number buttons of a remote control, or searches for the broadcast channel that is desired to be selected by changing channels one by one in the sequence of broadcast channel numbers through the manipulation of broadcast channel change buttons, such as a channel up (+) button and a channel down (-) button.
[4] However, in the case where the broadcast channel that is desired to be selected is directly selected by pressing the number of the corresponding broadcast channel through the manipulation of the number buttons of the remote control, a problem occurs in that the viewer is required to memorize the number of the broadcast channel that is desired to be selected. Furthermore, in the case where the broadcast channel that is desired to be selected is searched for by changing channels one by one in the sequence of broadcast channel numbers through the manipulation of the broadcast channel change buttons, problems occur in that it takes a long time to select the broadcast channel that is desired to be selected and in that all of the broadcast channels that exist between the current broadcast channel and the desired broadcast channel must be checked one by one, so that the convenience of usage is greatly decreased and, furthermore, the viewer is irritated.
[5] Meanwhile, in a digital broadcast, which has recently been provided as commercial service, content data (various pieces of information that include information about broadcast programs) as well as an audio signal and a video signal, is included in a broadcast signal. Accordingly, research into various methods of selecting a broadcast channel using the broadcast signal has been conducted, and some methods are already provided with commercial service.
[6] A typical method of selecting a broadcast channel of a digital TV using content data is performed in such a way that, when a viewer enters a specific search keyword through an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) by manipulating a remote control, the channel management module of set-top box middleware searches for channels each having content including the corresponding search keyword, notifies the viewer of the content of the found channels, and waits for channel manipulation (channel up/down, PVR recording or the like).
[7] However, in the above-described broadcast channel selection method, the viewer must input a specific search keyword and then check the content of corresponding found broadcast channels every time, despite the advantage that a specific channel can be quickly searched for using content, so that the above-described broadcast channel selection method is somewhat troublesome and inconvenient to use, and thus cannot be widely used, defeating the purpose of the development thereof. Disclosure of Invention Technical Problem
[8] Accordingly, the present invention has been devised to solve the above problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide a method of selecting a broadcast channel of a digital TV, which enables a viewer to quickly search for the broadcast channel desired to be selected through the simple manipulation of a remote control.
Technical Solution
[9] In order to accomplish the above object, the present invention provides a method of selecting a broadcast channel of a digital TV, the method causing broadcast channels to be changed one by one in the sequence of broadcast channel numbers when one of the broadcast channel change buttons of a remote control is pressed, the method including determining whether a broadcast channel change button pressing time is greater than a setting time when the broadcast channel change button is pressed, changing the broadcast channels one by one in the sequence of the broadcast channel numbers if it is determined that the broadcast channel change button pressing time is not greater than the setting time, and changing a current broadcast channel to the hub channel of a category corresponding to a genre that is closest to the genre of the current broadcast channel if it is determined that the broadcast channel change button pressing time is greater than the setting time.
Advantageous Effects
[10] In accordance with the above-descried embodiment present invention, broadcast channels are sequentially changed one by one in the sequence of broadcast channel numbers when the broadcast channel change button is pressed briefly, and the current broadcast channel is changed to the hub channel of a category corresponding to the genre that is closest to the genre of the current broadcast channel, when the broadcast channel change button is pressed and held down, so that the broadcast channel can be easily and quickly selected, therefore a viewer's convenience of use can be greatly improved.
Brief Description of the Drawings
[11] FIG. 1 is a diagram showing categories of broadcast channels for respective genres; and
[12] FIG. 2 is a flowchart illustrating a method of changing a broadcast channel according to the present invention. Mode for the Invention
[13] The present invention is described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings below.
[14] As shown in FIG. 1, categories are formed by classifying broadcast channels according to genre.
[15] Although, in the present embodiment, the broadcast channels are classified into home shopping, movies, dramas, entertainment/music, news/information, women's shows, culture/documentary, education, sports, leisure/hobby, religion, pop, theme music, and meditation music, shop music, etc. according to genre, the present invention is not limited thereto, and may arbitrarily classify genres in various ways as needed.
[16] Furthermore, although, in the present embodiment, broadcast channel numbers are sequentially set such that it is convenient to classify the broadcast channels according to genre, the present invention is not limited thereto, and the broadcast channel numbers may be arbitrarily set in various ways regardless of the sequence thereof.
[17] A method of selecting a broadcast channel of a digital TV according to the present invention is characterized in that whether a broadcast channel change button pressing time is greater than a setting time is determined when a broadcast channel change button is pressed, the broadcast channel is changed one by one in the sequence of the broadcast channel numbers if it is determined that the broadcast channel change button pressing time is not greater than the setting time, and the current broadcast channel is changed to the hub channel of the category corresponding to the genre that is closest to the genre of the current broadcast channel if it is determined that broadcast channel change button pressing time is greater than the setting time. The setting time is appropriately set such that the short pressing time is easily distinguished from the long pressing time. [18] Although, in the present embodiment, the broadcast channel, which belongs to the set of broadcast channels for each genre and has the lowest channel number, is set as the hub channel, as shown in FIG. 1, the present invention is not limited thereto, and any specific broadcast channel may be set as the hub channel.
[19] Meanwhile, each broadcast provider will desire that its broadcast channel be set as the hub channel (in the case of the hub channel, priority is given thereto when the broadcast channel is selected from among broadcast channels for each genre, so that the awareness and viewing rate of the selected broadcast channel will naturally increase if the broadcast channel is set as the hub channel), so that broadcast transmission providers can generate business profits merely by acquiring the right to be set as the hub channel.
[20] In the present invention, when a channel up (+) button and a channel down (-) button, constituting broadcast channel change buttons, are pressed briefly, broadcast channels are changed one by one in the sequence of broadcast channel numbers.
[21] In contrast, the current broadcast channel is changed to the hub channel of broadcast channels for a subsequent genre when the channel up (+) button, which is one of the broadcast channel change buttons, is pressed and held down for longer than the setting time, and the current broadcast channel is changed to the hub channel of broadcast channels for the current genre when the channel down (-) button, which is another of the broadcast channel change buttons, is pressed and held down for longer than the setting time.
[22] Under the assumption that the current broadcast channel is the hub channel of the broadcast channels for a given genre, the current broadcast channel is changed, as described above, to the hub channel of broadcast channels for the next genre when the channel up (+) button is pressed and held down for longer than the setting time, whereas the current broadcast channel is changed to the hub channel of broadcast channels for the previous genre when the channel down (-) button is pressed and held down for longer than the setting time.
[23] In accordance with the method of selecting a broadcast channel according to the present invention, a viewer can quickly and easily select an arbitrary broadcast channel.
[24] For example, in the case where the current broadcast channel is the channel 102 of a home shopping genre, and the new channel desired to be selected is the channel 303 of a drama genre, quick and easy channel selection is performed such that the channel is changed from the channel 102, which is the current broadcast channel, to the channel 302 of the drama genre when the channel up (+) button is pressed and held down two times (the current broadcast channel is changed to the movie hub channel 201 when the channel up (+) button is pressed and held down one time, and the current broadcast channel is changed to the drama hub channel 301 when the channel up (+) button is pressed and held down two times) and the channel up (+) button is pressed briefly two times.
[25] The present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiment, and may be further modified and implemented in various ways within the range that does not depart from the following claim.
