In use, when one or both of the gloves are punctured, aqueous liquids penetrate the gap between the gloves.
  • liquid variable refractive material will be used to mean any material whose refraction properties, that is its transparency/opaqueness, changes in the presence of liquids, fluids or the like
  • a multi-layered material comprising a middle layer that is sandwiched between an outer and an inner layer, the middle layer consisting of a liquid variable refraction material bound together with a binder, which has refractive properties that vary with its aqueous material and/or liquid and/or fluid content such that it is substantially opaque in its dry state but becomes at least partially transparent in response to the ingress of liquid / fluid material, the inner layer being pigmented with a colour, and the outer layer being at least partially transparent, wherein, in use, puncture of at least one of the inner and outer layers results in the ingress of liquid / fluid material into the middle layer, causing it to turn at least partially transparent such that the visibility of the coloured inner layer through the outer substrate layer is enhanced.
  • a material in accordance with the present invention has the advantage that, from the outside, it provides a visual indication of when it has been punctured. More particularly, it is the middle layer undergoing a refractive index change on wetting that enables this indication.

  • hydrophilic is used above and hereinafter to refer to materials which have an affinity for liquids and/or fluids, such as, but not limited to water, water vapour, oils etc. This may refer to a material which has an affinity for just one such liquid or fluid or which ahs an affinity for a range of such materials.
  • the inner layer of the material is pigmented with a strong, vivid colour so as to maximise the change in appearance of the laminate once, in use, the middle layer turns at least partially transparent.
  • the inner and outer layers are advantageously formed from a natural rubber latex.
  • the layers of the material may be adhered or bonded together so as to form a laminate.
  • the material may be formed from several separate layers of material that are in close contact but not physically bound to each other.
  • the three layers may be separate from each other, or the middle layer may be bonded to one or other of the inner and outer layers.
  • the inner and outer layers advantageously extend beyond the middle layer in the region of at least one edge of the material such that said inner and outer layers directly contact each other, thereby sealing the middle layer from the surrounding environment.
  • the hydrophilic nature of the middle layer is optimised via its hydrophilic material content such that it has an increased affinity towards liquid / fluid material in the event of a puncture.
  • the hydrophilic nature of the middle layer is such that, in the event of a puncture atmospheric aqueous material can ingress therein as well as other liquids/fluids present in the surrounding environment.
  • the middle layer is furthermore substantially completely dry such that it has a strong masking power in its sealed state. In this way, the colour of the inner layer is only revealed in the event of a puncture.
  • silica is preferably employed as the material in the middle layer, although it will be understood that other suitably hydrophilic or liquid variable refraction materials such as silicates, titanium oxide or a highly cross-linked polymeric material could alternatively be used therein.
  • the binder used to bind together the silica of the middle layer is preferably natural rubber latex, or other materials commonly used in elastomeric articles such as those described by Podell in US4499154 and US4575476. However, this invention is not limited to the binder described as other materials can also be used to bind the silica together and to bind the hydrophilic layer.
  • the outer layer of the material is substantially completely transparent and also preferably colourless such that it is able to clearly reveal any change in appearance of the material.
  • the laminate is advantageously given a substantially white or lightly coloured appearance from the outside and thus highlights any change in appearance towards the colour of the inner layer.
  • the middle layer may cover substantially the entire surface of the inner and outer layers, but advantageously is formed as a number of spaced apart regions, the inner and outer layers being in contact with each other in the areas between the regions of hydrophilic material provided therebetween.
  • the regions of hydrophilic material are then positioned in regions of the material which are susceptible to puncture in use.
  • the article is a glove, in particular a surgical glove, which accordingly has the advantage that the user need wear only a single glove on each hand, said single glove providing a visual indication to an observer, such as a wearer, when a puncture has occurred in either of the substrate layers.
  • the article could advantageously be, or form part of, any product in need of puncture-indicating or tamper evident properties, such as a condom.
  • the invention may be well understood, there will now be some embodiments thereof, given by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying Figure 1, which is a cross-section through the laminate of a surgical glove according to the invention.
  • a surgical glove according to the invention is formed from a laminate 1, which has the appearance of a thin, uniform film and comprises a porous, hydrophilic middle layer 2 sandwiched between an inner layer 3 and an outer layer 4 such that it is maintained in a substantially sealed and dry state.
  • the inner layer 3 is formed from natural rubber latex pigmented with a vivid colour
  • the middle layer 2 is formed from silica bound together with natural rubber latex
  • the outer layer 4 is formed from natural rubber latex that is at least partially transparent.
  • the middle layer 2 has variable refractive properties according to its aqueous material content such that it is substantially opaque in its dry state but becomes at least partially transparent in response to liquids or aqueous materials.
  • the substantially opaque middle layer 2 provides a strong masking power such that that the laminate 1 gives the surgical glove a substantially white appearance from the outside.
  • a region of the middle layer 2 turns at least partially transparent in response to any liquid, which, due to the hydrophilic/liquid variable refraction material nature of the middle layer 2, is attracted thereto via the at least one puncture.
  • the visibility from the outside of the coloured inner layer 3 in this region increases in a perceivable manner such that a wearer of the glove is provided with a visual indication of puncture.
  • any suitable material can be used to form the inner and outer layers 3, 4, any suitable binder can be used to bind the silica of the middle layer 2, the inner layer 3 can be formed from any substrate pigmented with colour, and the outer layer 4 can be any at least partially transparent material.
  • the laminate 1 could be formed into the shape of any puncture-indicating article, such as a condom, or could be used in conjunction with any product in need of puncture-indicating properties.
  • the inner and outer layers are formed as separate gloves which are donned one over the other.
  • the middle layer of hydrophilic/ liquid variable refraction material may then be formed as a third glove which is donned between the inner and outer gloves, but is preferably adhered either to the outer surface of the inner layer or the inner surface of the outer layer so as to form a laminate with the respective layer to which it is adhered.
  • the hydrophiiic material may then substantially cover the respective surface of the layer to which it is attached, but advantageously may be provided selectively in regions of the glove which are prone to puncture, such as the tips of the fingers and the palms.

Abstract

Dans la présente invention, un gant chirurgical est constitué d’un matériau multicouche (1) comprenant une couche médiane poreuse (3) qui est intercalée entre une couche extérieure (4) et une couche intérieure (2). La couche médiane (3) est constituée d’un matériau à réfraction liquide variable ou hydrophile lié avec un liant, qui possède des propriétés réfractives qui varient avec sa teneur en liquide de sorte qu’elle est sensiblement opaque à l’état sec mais devient au moins partiellement transparente en réponse à l’introduction de matériau aqueux. La couche intérieure (2) est pigmentée avec une couleur, et la couche extérieure (4) est au moins partiellement transparente, si bien que, lors de son utilisation, la perforation de la couche intérieure et/ou de la couche extérieure (2, 4) provoque l'introduction de liquide dans la couche médiane (3), la rendant au moins partiellement transparente de sorte que la visibilité de la couche intérieure (2) colorée à travers la couche de substrat extérieure (4) augmente de façon perceptible.
