Definitions
- This invention relates to head restraints for motor vehicles and in particular to a head restraint for a convertible motor vehicle.
- a motor vehicle having front and rear stowable roof panels moveable between raised and stowed positions and at least one seat assembly comprising a backrest, an automatically retractable head restraint slideably supported by the backrest for movement between a raised position and a lowered position, a biasing means to bias the head restraint into the lowered position and a latch mechanism to selectively hold the head restraint in the raised position wherein the latch mechanism is released by the process of stowing one of the front and rear roof panels so as to permit the head restraint to move to its lowered position.
- the motor vehicle may have front and rear rows of seats and the rear roof panel may be stowed between the front and rear rows of seats .
- the motor vehicle may have front and rear rows of seats and each of the seats in the rear row of seats having a head restraint may have an automatically retractable head restraint .
- the latch mechanism may be released by a linkage connected to part of the mechanism used to raise and stow the front roof panel.
- the latch mechanism may be released by a linkage connected to part of the mechanism used to raise and stow the rear roof panel .
- the linkage may be selected from a cable linkage, a rod, a chain and a fluid connection.
- the latch mechanism may be an electro-mechanical latch mechanism and is connected to an electronic controller used to control the raising and stowing of at least one of the front and rear roof panels and the electronic controller may be operable to release the latch mechanism so as to permit the head restraint to move to its lowered position when a signal is received indicative that at least one of the front and rear roof panels is in the process of being moved to its lowered position.
- the latch mechanism may include a release arm that projects above the head restraint when the head restraint is in the raised position and the latch mechanism may be released when the rear roof panel engages with the release arm during stowing of the rear roof panel.
- the backrest may be foldable from a substantially upright position to a folded forward position and a mechanism may be provided to release the latch mechanism when the backrest is moved from the upright position to the folded position.
- Fig.l is a pictorial representation of part of motor vehicle having a pair of head restraints in accordance with the invention
- Fig.2 is a cutaway side view of part of a motor vehicle according to the invention showing moveable front and roof panels in raised positions;
- Fig.3 is a side view similar to Fig.2 but showing a front roof panel in a lifted position forming a first step of a roof folding process in which the head restraints have moved to lowered or stowed positions;
- Fig.4 is a side view similar to Fig.2 but showing the front and rear roof panels in stowed positions;
- Fig.5 is a side view similar to Fig.4 but showing a rear seat in a folded position
- Fig. ⁇ A is a rear view of part of a seat assembly having a head restraint according to the invention.
- Fig.6B is a diagrammatic side view of part of a release mechanism for the head restraint shown in Fig. ⁇ A;
- Fig.7 is a schematic diagram of a latch mechanism for use in holding a head restraint in a raised position.
- a motor vehicle 5 having front and rear stowable roof panels 6 and 7 each of which is moveable between a raised position as shown in Fig.2 and a stowed position as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
- the front roof panel 6 is moveable by means of an arm arrangement 20 having a number of connected arms of which one is driven by an electric motor (not shown) to move the front roof panel 6 from its raised position to its stowed position and vice-versa.
- a similar linkage is used to move the rear roof panel 7 from its raised position to its stowed position.
- the motor vehicle has two rows of seats, therebeing a front row of seats having two seats 9 arranged side by side and a rear row of seats having two seat assemblies 10 arranged side by side.
- the rear roof panel 7 when in its stowed position is located between the front row of seats 9 and the rear row of seat assemblies 10 and lies just behind the front row of seats 9.
- the front roof panel 6 is located substantially horizontally to the rear of the front row of seats 9 so that it covers the rear row of seat assemblies 10. Therefore when the two roof panels 6, 7 are in their raised positions they define a four seat hatchback vehicle and when the two roof panels 6, 7 are in their stowed positions they define a two seat open top vehicle.
- Each of the seat assemblies 10, of which only one is shown in Figs. 2 to 5, comprises of a seat cushion 12 and a backrest 11 which are pivotally connected together so that the backrest 11 can fold forward and lie upon the seat cushion 12.
- the backrest 11 has an upper edge from which extends an automatically retractable head restraint 13 supported by two rods 17 each of which is slideably supported by part of the structure of the backrest 11 for movement between a raised position in which the head restraint 13 is positioned above the upper edge of the backrest 11 and a lowered position in which the head restraint 13 is positioned adjacent to the upper edge of the backrest 11 or is positioned in a recess formed in the upper edge of the backrest 11.
- Both of the seat assemblies 10 forming the rear row of seats have an automatically retractable head restraint 13.
- the invention could be used with a rear row of seats having two seats with retractable head restraints and a centre seat with no head restraint .
- a biasing means in the form of a spring (not shown) is used to bias the head restraint 13 into the lowered position and a latch mechanism (Fig.7) is used to selectively hold the head restraint 13 in the raised position.
- the latch mechanism is automatically released by the process of stowing one of the front and rear roof panels 6 and 7 and in this case is automatically released by the process of stowing the front roof panel 6.
- each of the head restraints 13 is connected to an arm 21 forming part of the arm arrangement 20 used to move the front roof 6 between its raised and stowed positions by a number of cables 14, 15, 16. It will be appreciated that there is an arm arrangement on both sides of the motor vehicle 5 but only the arm arrangement 20 on the right hand side of the motor vehicle 5 is shown.
- the cable 14 links the arm 21 which moves when the front roof is stowed to the two transfer cables 15, 16. It will be appreciated that the cables 14, 15 and 16 could be replaced by one or more rods, chains or fluid connections.
- Each of the transfer cables 15, 16 is connected to a respective latch mechanism.
- the arm 21 rotates and pulls on the cable 14 which then pulls both of the transfer cables 15, 16 which release the latch mechanisms holding the head restraints 13 in the raised positions.
- Each latch mechanism of which only the latch mechanism for the right hand head restraint 13 is shown in Fig.7, comprises of a latch arm 25 pivotally connected at one end to part of the structure of the backrest 11.
- the cable 15 or cable 16 is attached to a free end of the latch arm 25 so that it can cause the latch arm 25 to rotate about the position where it is pivotally connected.
- a spring 27 is also connected to the free end of the latch arm 25 to bias the latch arm 25 towards one of the rods 17 used to support a head restraint 13.
- the rod 17 has a circumferentially extending groove 29 (shown as a dotted line on Fig.7) formed in it into which the latch arm 25 can engage to hold the rod 17 in position. Therefore the latch arm 25 will remain held engaged in the circumferentially extending groove 29 by the spring 27 until the cable 15 is used to pull the latch arm 25 out of engagement.
- both of the head restraints 13 are automatically released to their lowered positions.
- the head restraint 13 is moveable to its raised position by the action of a user of the motor vehicle 5 which resets the latch mechanism.
- an electro-mechanical latch mechanism connected to an electronic controller used to control the raising and stowing of at least one of the front and rear roof panels 6, 7 could be used to release the head restraints 13.
- the electronic controller could be operable to release the latch mechanism so as to permit the head restraint to move to its lowered position either when a command is received from a user of the motor vehicle to stow at least one of the front and rear roof panels 6, 7 or when a signal is received from a sensor associated with one of the front and rear roof panels 6 and 7 or their respective stowing mechanisms indicating that the roof panels 6, 7 are in the process of being stowed.
- FIGs. 6A and 6B there is shown a head restraint assembly that is intended to replace that previously described.
- the seat assembly comprises of the backrest 11 having an upper edge from which extends the head restraint 13.
- Two rods 117 are used to support the head restraint 13 and two springs 119 are used to bias each head restraint 13 to a lowered position in which it lies substantially adjacent to the upper edge of the backrest 11.
- a latch mechanism (not shown in detail) is used to hold the head restraint 13 in a raised position in which it is spaced above the upper edge of the backrest 11 against the action of the springs 119.
- the latch mechanism includes a latch bar 120 which is moveable by a release arm 121 to release the latch mechanism and allow the head restraint 13 to move to its lowered or stowed position.
- the release arm 121 projects above the head restraint 13 when the head restraint 13 is in the raised position. If the release arm 121 is moved in a direction in which it is pushed into the backrest 11 the latch bar 120 is also moved causing it to release the latch mechanism.
- the release arm 121 is so positioned that the latch mechanism is automatically released by the process of stowing the rear roof panel 7 due to the engagement or abutment of the rear roof panel 7 with the release arm 121 during stowing of the rear roof panel 7. That is to say as the rear roof panel 7 is stowed it contacts the release arm 121 which in turn pushes the latch bar 120 to release the latch mechanism. As before the head restraint 13 is moveable to its raised position by the action of a user of the motor vehicle 5 which resets the latch mechanism.
- the backrest 11 is foldable from a substantially upright position to a folded forward position and a secondary release mechanism is provided to automatically release the latch mechanism when the backrest 11 is moved from the upright position to the folded position. This is to ensure that when the backrest 11 is folded the head restraint 13 is retracted or moved to its lowered position. It will be appreciated that it would be possible to lower the backrest 11 with the rear roof panel 7 in its raised position and then if the rear roof panel 7 is subsequently lowered it would impinge against the head restraint 13 unless it has been lowered because the release _ g - arm 121 will not necessarily be in the correct position to be moved by the rear roof panel 7.
- release arm 121 is pushed into the backrest 11 by the engagement with the rear roof panel 7 it will be appreciated that the release arm could be pivotally mounted so that the contact with the roof panel causes the release arm to be rotated forward to move the latch bar 120 or some other latch release component.
- the secondary release mechanism comprises of a cable 122 which is fastened at one end to the latch bar 120 and is wrapped partially around and is secured to a fixed grooved wheel 123 located on an axis coincident with or close to an axis about which the backrest 11 pivots to move to the folded down position.
- the grooved wheel 123 does not move when the backrest 11 is folded forward and so, as the backrest 11 is folded forward, the cable 123 is wrapped around the wheel 123 and so the latch bar 120 is moved towards the wheel 123 thereby releasing the latch mechanism.
- the invention provides a motor vehicle with head restraint assemblies that are automatically lowered so that contact that would otherwise occur between the head restraints and one or other of the moveable roof panels is avoided.
