Abstract
A method and system for image processing based on image texture information provides steps for detecting a texture component based on image gradients of an image that includes (i) computing (106) spatial image gradients of the image; (ii) determining (108) a value for a weighted image gradient per pixel within an image block representing an average energy of the image gradients; (iii) computing (110) an average value and a variance value per image block; and (iv) processing (112) the image for quality improvement. A processing step follows with a given threshold. Thereafter, if the pixel within the image block has an image gradient average greater than the threshold, the image is classified as including a 'texture' image area and the pixel within the image block is enhanced. However, if the image gradient average is smaller than the threshold, the image is classified as including a 'smooth' image area and enhanced by smoothing the pixel within the image block.
