Abstract
A furniture base (1) arranged to support an item of furniture (16) , where the furniture base (1) comprises a thin plate (2) of a tubular shape, the thin plate (2) being interconnected along two of its opposing sides (6) , and where the thin plate (2) projects between a base plate (4) and the item of furniture (16).
Description
FURNITURE BASE
This invention regards a furniture base. More particularly it regards a furniture base for an item of furniture where a thin plate is given a tubular shape, the thin plate being interconnected along two of its opposing sides, and where the thin plate projects from a base plate and up to the item of furniture. When disassembled, the furniture base is suitable for so-called flat packing.
A considerable share of the furniture sold comes in so-called flat packets. This means packets in which the item of furniture in question has not been assembled and packed in order to occupy a relatively small volume.
Flat packets of this type are partly handled manually, and as such it is important to limit the weight of each packet to that which a person can be expected to handle.
In accordance with prior art, furniture bases, which in use must be able to absorb a certain amount of force, are often
quite bulky and thus heavy assemblies made from wood materials .
Thus these known furniture bases are relatively unsuitable for flat packing, which may limit the sales of flat packed base mounted furniture.
The object of the invention is to remedy or reduce at least one of the drawbacks of prior art.
The object is achieved in accordance with the invention, by the features specified in the description below and in the following claims.
A furniture base according to the invention is arranged to support an item of furniture, and comprises a thin plate which has been given a tubular shape, where the thin plate is interconnected along two of its opposing sides, the thin plate projecting from a base plate and up to the item of furniture .
The thin plate has been given a shape which is a complementary match to that of the item of furniture. The base plate is provided with a shoulder along its external edge, the thin plate bearing against this shoulder.
The thin plate is diametrically distended when bearing against the shoulder.
An intermediate plate is provided inside the thin plate at a level above the base plate. The external shape of the intermediate plate corresponds to the shape of the base
plate. When in the mounted position, the intermediate plate also contributes to the diametrical distension of the thin plate and helps the thin plate maintain an essentially constant cross sectional shape along its extent between the base plate and the item of furniture.
The thin plate is pretensioned between the base plate and the item of furniture, by means of tension rods. The tension rods are also used to keep the intermediate plate in its predetermined position.
Prior to the thin plate being rolled up into a tubular shape all the parts included in the furniture base are suited for flat packing. Compared with prior art furniture bases, the furniture base of the invention is relatively light while at the same time being capable of absorbing considerable forces when mounted.
The following describes a non-limiting example of a preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which :
Fig. 1 shows a furniture base according to the invention which forms the supporting member for an item of furniture;
Fig. 2 shows a sectional view I-I through Figure 1;
Fig. 3 shows a larger scale sectional view II-II through Figure 2 ;
Fig. 4 shows a section Ha of figure 2 on a larger scale; and
Fig. 5 shows a section Hb of Figure 2 on a larger scale.
In the drawings, reference number 1 denotes a furniture base comprising a thin plate 2 and a base plate 4. In Figure 1, parts of the thin plate 2 have been removed in order to provide a better illustration of the internal structure.
Along two Opposing sides 6 of the thin plate 2 there are provided folds 8 arranged to be interconnected when the thin plate 2 is rolled up into a tubular shape, see Figure 3.
The tubular shape of the thin plate 2 is maintained by moving the lower edge portion 10 (referring to the position of use) of the thin plate 2 in across the base plate 4 until it stops against a shoulder 12, see Figure 5. By so doing, the tubular shape of the thin plate 2 will assume the areal shape of the base plate.
In its opposite edge portion 14 the thin plate has been given a shape that matches that of the item of furniture 16, see Figures 1 and 4. The item of furniture 16 is supported by the furniture base 1.
An intermediate plate 18 is provided relatively high up within the thin plate 2. The intermediate plate 18, the shape of which is identical to that of the base plate 4, helps maintain the shape of the thin plate 2.
A suitable number of tension rods 20 extend from fastening
points 22 in the item of furniture 16 via through bores 24 in the intermediate plate and through bores 26 in the base plate 4.
Each tension rod is provided with a washer 28 and a nut 30 supporting the intermediate plate 18 and a washer 32 and a nut 34 located in a recess 36 in the base plate 4.
The nut 34 is arranged to clamp the base plate 4 and the thin plate 2 against the item of furniture 16.
