Description

HYDRAULIC CONNECTIONS
This invention relates to hydraulic connections and in particular to connections between a hydraulic component such as a master cylinder, slave cylinder, damper connector or accumulator and plastics piping in a hydraulic circuit for the operation of a vehicle function such as a vehicle clutch.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of connecting a hydraulic component to a plastics hydraulic pipe which is simple and cheap to carry out.
Thus according to the present invention there is provided a method of connecting a hydraulic component to a plastics hydraulic pipe comprising:-
- forming the component from a harder material than the pipe with an internally screwed bore for reception of the pipe, the screw thread formed in the bore being of a tapering form with the internal diameter of the bore decreasing with distance from the open end of bore, and
- screwing the component onto the pipe with the component forming a complementary thread on the outside of the pipe as the component is screwed on.
The component may be, for example, an end fitting or other hydraulic component such as a valve housing, cylinder body, part of a hydraulic connector or damper casing. For example, T-connectors, quick connectors or angled connectors can be connected with plastics piping using the present invention.
The component may be formed from glass reinforced plastic (eg Pa 6.6 GF 20) and the pipe may be formed from nylon (eg, Nylon 12).
The component could be made from metal eg, aluminium. The invention also provides a hydraulic circuit which includes one or more components connected with plastics piping by the above screwing method.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of a vehicle clutch actuation system which includes several hydraulic connections according to the present invention:
Figure 2 shows on an enlarged scale a plan view of part of a hydraulic connection according to the present invention:
Figure 3 is an end view in the direction of C of Fig 2;
Figure 4 is a section on the line B-B of figure 3;
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line A-A of figure 2 showing the connection used to connect a master cylinder to the system of Figure 1 , and
Figure 6 shows part of the arrangement shown in figure 5 on a larger scale.
Referring now to figure 1 , this shows a clutch actuating system in which a master cylinder 10 operated by a pedal 11 is connected via plastic piping 12a, 12b with a slave cylinder 13 which operates a clutch release bearing 14 via a lever 15 which is pivoted at 16 on a clutch housing 17. As is conventional the release bearing 14 operates a belleville clutch clamping spring 18, which is shown diagrammatically in figure 1.
The master cylinder 10 is connected to a system reservoir 19 in the conventional manner and the slave cylinder 13 is mounted on the clutch housing 17 via a bracket 20. The clutch is disengaged by depressing pedal 11 which expels fluid from the master cylinder 10 into slave cylinder 13 via piping 12a, 12b to pivot the lever 15 clockwise about pivot 16 and thus displace the clutch release bearing 14 to the left as in figure 1 to disengage the clutch.
In accordance with the present invention the master cylinder 10 is connected with the piping section 12a via a connection part of which is shown in figure 5. In this arrangement the plastics pipe 12a is screwed into a quick connect coupler portion 21 which is itself held captive in the other half 22 of the quick connect coupling which is formed integrally with master cylinder 10 by a generally U shaped wire connector 23 which engages slots 24 formed in the master cylinder and a circumferentially extending groove 25 in the quick connect coupler portion 21.
The present invention is concerned with the manner in which the plastics pipe 12a is connected with the connector portion 21. This connection is achieved by providing the coupler portion 21 with a tapering internal screw thread 26 into which the pipe 12a is screwed.
The coupler portion 21 is formed from a glass reinforced plastics material such as Pa 6.6 GF 20 which is harder than the material of which the plastic piping 12 is formed which is typically Nylon 12.
Details of the thread 26 are shown on a larger scale in figure 6. As can be seen the thread tapers from left to right with the entry root diameter ER being greater than the exit root diameter XR and the entry crest diameter EC being greater than the exit crest diameter XC. In a typical example, ER is 8.16mm in diameter and XR is typically 7.56mm in diameter. Similarly typical values for EC are 7.6mm and for XC 6.6mm. Typically the length of the bore is 16 mm and the external diameter of pipe 12a is 7.86 mm ± 0.3 mm. As can clearly be seen from figures 4, 5 and 6 the internal bore 27 of connector portion 21 also tapers from left to right so that the radius of the bore tapers at an angle of approximately 1 °. This enables the moulding cores used to form the quick attach component 21 to be easily withdrawn from the components to the left as viewed in the above referred to figures. The quick connect portion 21 is provided with external generally hexagonal drive formations 28 formed thereon which are used to grip the quick connect portion and rotate this relative to the pipe 12a as the two components are connected.
As will be appreciated rotation of the connector portion 21 relative to the pipe 12a results in deformation of the softer pipe 12a into a corresponding external screw thread formation which seals the connection between the pipe and the connector portion 21. The connector portion 21 is sealed within the connector portion 22 formed integrally with master cylinder 10 by an "O" ring seal 29.
A similar connection 21, 22 is provided between the slave cylinder-13 and-the piping 12b as indicated in figure 1.
The system is designed to be assembled in two halves, the first half comprising the master cylinder 10 and pipe portion 12a and the second half comprising the slave cylinder 13 and the pipe portion 12b. These two portions of the system are themselves connected by a connector arrangement 21a, 22a which is basically the same as that previously described with reference to figure 5. In this arrangement the piping portion 12b is screwed into the connector portion 21a as previously described with reference to figure 5 and the piping portion 12a is screwed into the second portion 22b of the connector which is internally threaded with a thread similar to the thread 26 described above.
In such an arrangement the portion of the system comprising the master cylinder 10, piping 12a and connector portion 22a can be mounted on the vehicle chassis and the portion of the system comprising the slave cylinder 13 , piping 12b and quick connect portion 21a can be mounted on the vehicle engine which is subsequently lowered into the vehicle engine compartment. After the mounting of the engine in the engine compartment the two halves of the system can be connected by introducing connector portion 21a into connector portion 22a to complete the system. The system may be fitted without fluid (ie dry) or could be fitted with each half of the system pre-filled with hydraulic fluid and the connector portions 21a and 22b including valving preventing escape of the fluid from each respective half of the system until the two systems halves are joined. Such a quick connect arrangement is well known and described for example in US Patent 4624290 or 4607670.
As will be appreciated the present invention can be used to connect plastic piping to any component in a hydraulic circuit. For example, a hydraulic damper, quick connector or accumulator can be connected into the piping using a screw thread connection in accordance with the invention. Also, the component which is connected to the plastics piping, which is harder than the piping, may in certain circumstances be formed from metal such as aluminium.
