Abstract

A self-steering axle assembly which can be supported to a vehicle includes an axle (28). A suspension (60) and steering system interposed between the axle and the vehicle are rotatable as a unit around a motion axis of the axle. A pivotally supported member such as a platform (150) can tilt to rotate the suspension and steering system. A mover such as a piston and cylinder assembly (172) is connected to determine the angular displacement of he platform with respect to he vehicle. When the actuator (170) is in a first position, caster is positive and when the platform is in a second position, caster is negative enabling the vehicle to self steer in the reverse mode. In a further embodiment, a vehicle or trailer is provided including a self-steering axle constructed in accordance with the present invention.
