Abstract

A visor (422) is compactly stored in a location either forwardly or rearwardly of an overhead air bag module (20) so as not to interfere with the deployment of the air bag. The visor (420) can be a folded or sliding multiple panel visor. The visor (420) can be mounted to the air bag module (20), or to an A-pillar of a vehicle.

1. A visor and air bag deployment system comprising: a headliner for mounting to a vehicle roof; an air bag module positioned above the headliner, said module including an air bag; a passageway formed in said headliner to allow deployment of said air bag forwardly and downwardly from the headliner between a vehicle windshield and an occupant; and a folded visor mounted in spaced relationship to said passageway to allow deployment of an air bag.
2. The system as defined in claim 1 wherein said folded visor includes a first panel having a mounting bracket for attachment to a vehicle and at least a second panel hingedly mounted to said first panel for extending the sun blocking area of said visor.

4. The system as defined in claim 2 wherein said visor is positioned behind said air bag module.
5. A visor for a vehicle having an air bag module mounted to the roof comprising: a first panel including a pivot rod for mounting the visor to a vehicle for movement between a raised stored position adjacent a vehicle headliner and lowered use positions; a second panel pivotally mounted to said first panel at an edge of said first panel remote from said pivot rod, said second panel pivotally mounted to said first panel for movement between a position substantially coplanar with said first panel to extended positions spaced from said first panel; and a control member extending between said first and second panels for limiting the motion of said second panel such that an air bag can be deployed without interference
24 from said visor when said second panel is extended and also when said first panel is lowered and said second panel is fully extended.
6. The visor as defined in claim 5 wherein said control member includes a pair of spools, one mounted to said first panel and another mounted to said second panel and a cable extending between said spools such that said second panel can rotate only to the extent allowed by the slack of cable between said spools.
7. The visor as defined in claim 6 wherein the rotation of said first panel changes the tension on said cable.
8. The visor as defined in claim 5 wherein said visor is mounted to a vehicle having an overhead air bag deployment system and said control member prevents the positioning of said second panel in the pathway of deployment of an air bag.
9. A visor and air bag deployment system comprising: a headliner for mounting to a vehicle roof; an air bag module positioned above the headliner, said module including an air bag; a passageway formed in said headliner to allow deployment of said air bag forwardly and downwardly from the headliner between a vehicle windshield and an occupant; and a visor having an extendable panel mounted in spaced relationship to said passageway to allow deployment of an air bag.
10. The system as defined in claim 9 wherein said visor includes a first panel having a mounting bracket for attachment to a vehicle and a second panel slidably mounted to said first panel for extending the sun blocking area of said visor.

13. A visor and air bag deployment system comprising: a headliner for mounting to a vehicle roof; an air bag module positioned above the headliner, said module including an air bag; a passageway formed in said headliner to allow deployment of said air bag forwardly and downwardly from the headliner between a vehicle windshield and an occupant; and a slide-out visor mounted in spaced relationship to said passageway to allow deployment of an air bag.
14. The system as defined in claim 13 wherein said slide-out visor includes a pair of arms and said system includes a pair of sockets for mounting above the headliner for slidably receiving said arms.
15. The system as defined in claim 14 wherein said visor includes a flexible polymeric material extending between said arms.
16. The system as defined in claim 14 wherein said visor includes an accordion folded material extending between said arms.
17. A visor and air bag mounting system comprising: a headliner for mounting to a vehicle roof; an air bag module positioned above the headliner, said module including an air bag; a visor including a visor pivot rod extending therefrom; and a mounting bracket receiving said visor pivot rod for movement of said visor to adjusted positions, wherein said mounting bracket is adapted to be secured to an A-pillar of a vehicle at a position to allow deployment of an air bag from said module without interference with said visor.
26
18. The system as defined in claim 17 wherein said mounting bracket includes a slide for moving said visor along an A-pillar.
19. The system as defined in claim 17 wherein said mounting bracket includes a pivot connection allowing said visor to pivot with respect to an A-pillar.
20. The system as defined in claim 17 wherein said mounting bracket includes a collar for extending over a pivot axle in an A-pillar.
21. The system as defined in claim 17 wherein said visor pivot rod is external to said visor and has one end pivotally coupled to said visor and an opposite end coupled to said mounting bracket.
22. A visor mounting system for mounting a visor to an A-pillar comprising: a visor body; and a visor mounting bracket, wherein said mounting bracket includes a mounting block having a pair of orthogonally extending axles for coupling to said visor and to an A-pillar to allow said visor to pivot downwardly from a stored position about one of the axles and pivot laterally toward a side window about the other of said axle.
23. A visor moimting system comprising: a visor including a visor pivot rod extending therefrom; and a mounting bracket receiving said visor pivot rod for coupling said visor pivot rod to a vehicle windshield, wherein said mounting bracket is adapted to be secured to the windshield of a vehicle and receives one end of said pivot rod.
