Definitions
- the invention relates to a data link connector for high frequency use and consisting of a connector part having contact parts, a transition part and a tensile relief part, said contact parts having connected thereto a cable having a plurality of conductors which are twisted in pairs and insulated from each other, and which are surrounded by a common sheath extending from the contact parts through the transition part and the tensile relief parts and further inside a conductor sheath.
- the invention also relates to an interconnecting cable.
- Data link connectors are widely used for the interconnection of data units, be it connection of PCs to telephone lines, coupling to servers which are incorporated in consoles, etc.
- Examples of data link connectors for high frequency use include connectors which are used for cables of the co-called CAT 5 standard, which are intended to transfer data at a minimum rate of 100 Mbps.
- Such cables may e.g. have a copper conductor with a diameter of 0.5 mm. It may also be made by coating a silk cord with about 0.3 mm copper.
- An ordinary data link connector consists of a connector part which merges into a transition part and a tensile relief part.
- the connector part includes contact parts which are intended to be connected to e.g. a data link connector of a PC.
- the contact parts are connected to a plurality of conductors which extend through the connector part, the transition part and the tensile relief part and further inside a conductor sheath to a second connector part which may be connected to e.g. a telephone line.
- the connector part, the transition part and the tensile relief are connected axially.
- the cable When the connector part is connected to an apparatus, which may be incorporated in a console, the cable will be bent in the tensile relief area, as, normally, it is to be connected to an outlet in an apparatus which is located vertically offset. If the connection thus takes place between two appara- tuses in a console which are arranged offset from each other in a vertical direction, the connector will be bent sharply in the tensile relief area because of the tensile impact that may easily occur in the cable in a vertical direction.
- an object of the invention is to provide a data link connector which, when connected to a cable and subjected to a pull in the cable, does not cause the dimensions of the conductors in the cable connector to be changed with the consequent risk that high frequency data cannot be transferred through the cable.
- the object of the invention is achieved by a data link connector of the type stated in the introductory portion of claim 1 , which is characterized in that the transition part is formed as an angular member having first and second subareas in which the conductors twisted in pairs are embedded, so that they extend curvilinearly in the area where the first and second subareas adjoin each other. It is thus ensured that no sharp bend occurs in the conductors in the transition part which may have a damaging effect on the ability of the conductors to transfer high frequency data signals in the data link connector.
- the data link connector is adapted to transfer data through a CAT 5 standard conductor via telecommunications networks, as stated in claim 2, and made by a moulding process, as stated in claim 3.
- the invention also relates to an interconnecting cable.
- This interconnecting cable is characterized in claim 4.
- fig. 1 is a lateral view of a data link connector, outlining internal details, while
- fig. 2 is a perspective view of the data link connector.
- a data link connector is generally designated 1. As will be seen, it consists of a connector part 2 which extends in a transition part 3 and further to a tensile relief part 4.
- a plurality of conductors shown at 10 in fig. 1 extend inside the connector part 2, the transition part 3 and the tensile relief part 4. These conductors, which are twisted in pairs with individual insulation, which is not visible in the figure, extend out of the tensile relief part 4 inside a cable sheath 5 and further to a connector or an apparatus (not shown).
- the conductors twisted in pairs are arranged loosely inside the cable sheath, so that they may move slightly relative to it.
- the conductors twisted in pairs may be of the so-called CAT 5 standard, which is intended to transfer data at rates of up to 100 Mbps.
- the individual conductors may be made of copper and have a diameter of 0.5 mm or may be made by vapour deposition of an 0.3 mm thick copper layer on a silk cord.
- a locking hook 6 which may be adapted to lock the data link connector in a counterpart (not shown), which may e.g. be a female data link connector which is arranged in an apparatus.
- transition part 3 consists of two subareas 3a,
- the conductors 10 twisted in pairs are embedded curvilinearly without sharp bends in the transition part 3 in the area where the subareas 3a, 3b adjoin each other.
- the cable sheath will extend vertically or in parallel with the vertical face. If a pull is now exerted in the cable sheath 5, the transition part will absorb this pull, but as the cable conductors 10 are disposed curvilinearly in the transition part, this pull will not give rise to dimensional changes in the cable conductors, which each have very small diameters, and subsequent reduction of the upper frequency limit at which data may be transferred.
- a link connector where connector part, transition part and tensile relief part are disposed axially, would be subjected to forces in the tensile relief part which would be able to change the dimensions of the thin cable conductors or even cause these to be bent sharply with the consequent risk that they cannot transfer data at high frequencies.
