Abstract

A method of fabricating a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) (50), the method comprising: generating changes in phase and/or amplitude of light in a light beam (40) that are functions of two coordinates in a plane on which the beam is incident so as to generate a given optical intensity pattern; and illuminating a segment of optic fiber (22) with the optical intensity pattern to imprint the fiber segment with a spatial variation in its index of refraction that has a pattern (52) responsive to the optical intensity pattern.
