Abstract

A system for detecting acoustic energy in marine seismic operations. A continuous piezoelectric film (18) is positioned within a cable (10) for detecting marine acoustic source energy reflected and refracted from subsurface geologic formations. The cable can be stationary relative to the seafloor or can be towed by a seismic vessel through the water. The film is positioned relative to the cable so that the film is adjacent to a compressive material (14). As the seismic energy contacts the film, the compressible material permits displacement of the film which can be detected and converted into an electric signal. Further processing of the signals provides information representing the subsurface geologic formations, and the system substantially reduces undesirable noise within such signals.
