Description

Grid for holding a catalyst in a bundle of plates of a catalytic reactor.
The present invention relates to a grid for holding a catalyst in a plate bundle of a catalytic reactor and a plate bundle provided with such a grid.
In many industries, such as the petrochemical and chemical industries, treatment processes are used which employ reactors in which chemical reactions, which are generally reactions, take place between a reactive fluid and a catalyst. catalysts taking place under given conditions of temperature and pressure. For this, we use catalytic reactors formed by a sealed enclosure inside which are arranged parallel tubes filled with catalysts.
The main fluid circulates in these tubes inside which the reaction takes place and the cooling fluid if this reaction is exothermic or the heat transfer fluid if said reaction is endothermic circulates outside of said tubes, between them and the inner wall of the enclosure.
The main drawback of these tabular reactors lies in their dimensions because, for large units, the number of tubes quickly becomes very large and the diameter of the device excessive. Catalytic plate reactors are also known which comprise a bundle of plates delimiting a first circuit for circulation of a reactive fluid and a second circuit for circulation of a cooling fluid or a heat-transfer fluid, the two circuits circulating against -current or cross-currents in the plate bundle. The reactive fluid circuit includes a catalyst capable of promoting the catalytic reaction and this circuit also includes means for holding this catalyst in the channels of said circuit.
Generally, the means for holding the catalyst are formed by grids extending over the entire width of the channels of the reactive fluid circuit and each having openings smaller than the size of the grains forming the catalyst. These grids must be able to withstand all mechanical stresses such as the weight of the catalyst, the variations in spacing between two plates of the bundle of plates as well as the expansion of the plates of said bundle by thermal effect. Finally, these grids must also resist the compressive and tensile forces at the level of the fixing zones on the plates of the plate bundle and have small openings to avoid the passage of the catalyst, but sufficiently wide to allow the reactive fluid to pass. without generating too much pressure drop. Until now, the grids have the shape of a U comprising three flat and rigid branches.
Given this shape and the rigidity of the lateral branches, this type of grids does not allow to correctly overcome the manufacturing and mounting tolerances between two plates of the bundle of plates as well as the expansion of these plates by thermal effect, which poses problems in the areas of attachment of said grid between the plates of the plate bundle.
Selon d'autres caractéristiques de l'invention :The object of the invention is to propose a grid for holding a catalyst which avoids the drawbacks mentioned above. The subject of the invention is therefore a grid for holding a catalyst in a bundle of plates of a catalytic reactor, said bundle of plates being formed by a stack of heat exchange plates delimiting between them circuits for circulating fluids. and at least one of which is filled with said catalyst held at each end of the circuit by said grid, characterized in that it is formed by at least one flexible plate of width greater than the space between two adjacent plates of the circuit containing said catalyst and folded according to a radius of curvature substantially equal to or greater than half of said space so that the branches of the folded plate are applied by elasticity to the plates of said circuit. According to other characteristics of the invention:
- la partie centrale de la plaque pliée est dirigée vers l'intérieur du circuit contenant ledit catalyseur, - le rayon de courbure de ladite plaque est continu, the central part of the folded plate is directed towards the inside of the circuit containing said catalyst, the radius of curvature of said plate is continuous,
- la partie centrale de la plaque pliée comporte des fentes pour le passage du fluide, the central part of the folded plate has slots for the passage of the fluid,
The slots extend transversely or longitudinally, - the branches of the folded plate are fixed to the plates of said circuit by welding.
The invention also relates to a bundle of plates for a catalytic reactor, of the type comprising a stack of heat exchange plates delimiting between them circuits for circulating fluids and at least one of which is filled with a catalyst, characterized in that the catalyst is held at each end of the circuit by a grid as previously mentioned.
The invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows, given by way of example and made with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
2 and 3 are schematic perspective views respectively of the grid before folding and of the grid after folding,
4 and 5 are schematic cross-sectional views showing the mounting of a grid in a bundle of plates of a catalytic reactor.
In Fig. 1, there is shown schematically a bundle of plates designated as a whole by the reference 1 and intended to be placed in a sealed enclosure, not shown, to form a catalytic reactor.
The bundle of plates 1 of generally parallelepipedal shape is constituted by a stack of plates 2 parallel to each other and delimiting a multitude of channels which extend longitudinally from one end to the other of the bundle of plates 1. Conventionally, the plates 2, for example made of stainless steel, are held together by suitable means and have edges with a smooth surface and a central part provided with corrugations, not shown, by which they are in contact with one another. the others and by which they delimit said channels.
In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the plates 2 define between them a first series of channels 10A forming a circulation circuit for a reactive fluid A and a second series of channels 10B forming a circulation circuit for a heat transfer fluid B. The channels 10A are distributed over every other channel in the bundle of plates 1 and the fluid A circulates in these channels 10A at cross currents relative to the heat transfer fluid B.
A.Furthermore, the channels 10A for circulation of the reactive fluid A contain particles 5 of catalyst so as to cause the desired reaction during the passage of the reactive fluid A.
The catalyst particles 5 are held at each end of the channels 10A by a grid 20 which extends over the entire length of the end of said channels 10A of the plate bundle 1.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, each grid 20 is formed from at least one plate 21 preferably of flexible material and of width "I" greater than the space "e" between two adjacent plates of the circuit formed by the channels 10A containing the catalyst particles 5.
The plate 21 is folded according to a radius of curvature "r" whether continuous or not so as to delimit a curved central part 21a and two branches 21b. The radius of curvature "r" is substantially equal to or greater than half the space "e" between two adjacent plates 2 of the circuit containing the catalyst particles 5.
The central part 21a of the plate 21 has transverse slots 22 for the passage of the reactive fluid A and distributed, in the embodiment shown in the figures, in two parallel rows.
According to a variant, the central part 21a of the plate 21 can comprise a single row of transverse slots 22. According to another variant, the slots 22 extend longitudinally.
These slots 22 may or may not be interrupted by a ligament and are sufficiently fine to not allow the catalyst particles 5 to escape through said slots, but they are wide enough to allow the reactive fluid A to pass without generating too much pressure losses.
As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the folded plate 21 is positioned opposite the end of the channel 10A to be closed so that the central part 21a of said plate 21 is directed towards the interior of the circuit containing the particles 5 of catalyst.
This folded plate 21 is introduced into the corresponding channel 10A, as shown in FIG. 5.
Du fait du rayon de courbure "r" qui est sensiblement égal ou supérieur à la moitié de l'espace "e" entre deux plaques 2 adjacentes, les branches 21b de la plaque 21 pliée s'appliquent par élasticité sur lesdites plaques 2.Due to the radius of curvature "r" which is substantially equal to or greater than half the space "e" between two adjacent plates 2, the branches 21b of the folded plate 21 are applied by elasticity to said plates 2.
The central part 21a of the plate 21 is therefore oriented towards the inside of the bundle of plates 1 and, after the positioning of this plate 21, the branches 21b are fixed to the adjacent plates 2 by welding.
This welding can be carried out by the TIG method, by points or continuously and with or without filler metal, or even by points generated by capacitor discharge.
Each end of the channels 10A of the circulation circuit of the reactive fluid A is thus provided with a grid 20 so as to maintain the particles 5 of catalyst in each of said channels 10A. The grid 20 according to the invention has the advantage, due to its shape, of being able to withstand all mechanical stresses such as the weight of the catalyst, the variations in spacing between two adjacent plates of the bundle of plates and also the expansions by thermal effect of these plates. The grids according to the invention also have the advantage of being able to recover the manufacturing tolerances at the level of the welding zone and this thanks to the elasticity effect of the branches of the grid. Finally, the grid according to the invention is easily produced by folding or stretching, which makes it possible to be able to produce a grid closing off the entire end of each channel of the corresponding circuit which, in certain embodiments, may have a length of the order of five meters.
