Abstract

A method of compressing images that comprises subdividing a single image into regions of similar complexity and compressing each region independently is provided. The compressed regions are then stored in a single file comprising both the compressed data representing the image regions and map data representing the location of each separate region within the original image. In further embodiments, the file contains additional data such as the compression method used to compress each region within the original image, including in various embodiments the algorithm or algorithms employed, the degree of compression used, the resolution of the compressed image, and data representing the complexity of each region.
