Abstract
A motor vehicle rear seat comprises a bench structure made of plastic material (5), defining a plurality of container wells (6) that are open at the top and each provided with an upper cover component (7) shaped basically as a cushion, of which one face is provided with padding while the other face presents a rigid supporting surface. Each cover component (7) can be mounted either with its padding uppermost, for use as a seat, or with its padding downmost, to avoid damage to the latter when the bench is used as an extension of the luggage loading floor.
Description
"Motor vehicle rear seat with container well and two- sided lid"
The present innovation relates to rear seats for motor vehicles.
The object of the innovation is to provide a rear seat of simple structure and low cost and that is nonetheless extremely functional in use, being particularly suited to use in a car with a small engine designed for simplicity, practicality and low weight.
In order to achieve this object, the subject of the innovation is a rear seat characterized in that it comprises a bench structure made of plastic material defining a plurality of container wells that are open at the top and each provided with an upper cover component shaped basically as a cushion, of which one face is provided with padding and associated cover, while the other face presents a relatively rigid surface, the said cover component being able to be mounted either with its padded face uppermost, for use as a seat, or with its padded face downmost, to form an upper surface suitable for loading luggage.
The innovation is particularly suitable for use on a rear seat of the type that forms the subject-matter of a simultaneous application by the same Applicant, in which the backrest of the rear seat comprises at least one portion hinged about an approximately vertical axis adjacent to one side of the seat, in such a way that this portion can be rotated into a position in which it is next to the corresponding side of the passenger compartment of the vehicle, in order to increase the luggage space of the motor vehicle.
Other features and advantages of the innovation will be found in the description which follows with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a partial and diagrammatic perspective view of a rear seat according to the innovation,
Figure 2 is a partial perspective view on an enlarged scale of a detail of the seat according to the innovation,
Figure 3 is another perspective view of the seat according to the innovation, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of a detail of Figure 3. Referring to the drawings, the number 1 indicates the whole of a motor vehicle rear seat comprising a backrest 2 of the type which has formed the subject- matter of a simultaneous application by the same Applicant, in which this backrest includes two portions 3 (only one of which is illustrated) , each hinged about an approximately vertical axis 3a adjacent to the corresponding side of the seat, in such a way that each backrest portion 3 can be moved from its normal operating position to an inoperative position in which it is against the corresponding side of the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle, thus increasing the amount of luggage space.
The rear seat 1 comprises a seat bench 4 which includes a structure made of plastic material, e.g. structural expanded polypropylene, indicated as a whole by the reference number 5. The structure 5 defines a plurality of container wells 6 which are closed at the top by cover components 7 shaped to form cushions. Each cover component 7 has one padded face, with associated cover, and an opposite face presenting a hard surface that can be used as a loading surface. In addition, each component 7 can be fitted either with its padding uppermost (as illustrated on the left in Figure 1) in order to act as the seat cushion, or with its padding downmost (as illustrated on the right in Figure 1) in
order to prevent damage to the padding when the upper surface of the bench 4 is used as an extension of the floor of the luggage space, when the backrest portions 3 have been rotated into their inoperative positions. Figure 2 illustrates on a larger scale the cross- sectioned structure of the plastic component 5 defining the associated well 6. It should be observed that at least one of the wells 6 has an open bottom in which a further container 8 is inserted (see Figures 3 and 4), e.g. to hold the tools provided with the motor vehicle. This innovation also applies of course to other models which achieve equal utility by using the same innovative concept.
Claims
1. Motor vehicle rear seat characterized in that it comprises a bench structure (5) made of plastic material defining a plurality of container wells (6) that are open at the top and each provided with an upper cover component (7) shaped basically as a cushion, of which one face is provided with padding while the other face presents a rigid supporting surface, each cover component (7) being able to be mounted either with its padded face uppermost, for use as a seat, or with its padded face downmost, to form a luggage loading floor.
2. Rear seat according to Claim 1, characterized in that it comprises a backrest (2) that includes at least one portion (3) hinged to the bodywork of the motor vehicle about an approximately vertical axis (3a) adjacent to the corresponding side of the seat, which portion can be moved from an operating position of normal use to an inoperative position in which this backrest portion is against the corresponding side of the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle.
3. Seat according to Claim 1, characterized in that the abovementioned bench structure is made of structural expanded polypropylene.
4. Seat according to Claim 1, characterized in that at least one of the said wells (7) has an open bottom for access to a further container (8) arranged underneath the said bench structure (5) .
