Definitions

  • This invention relates to a composite panel, in particular a composite panel which has a variety of uses such as a building material, as a panel or the like.
  • Composite panels have been used for many years and will be familiar to many people, in particular builders and those who work in construction industries.
  • composite panels comprise a multi-layer construction or, what is commonly referred to as a sandwich construction. It is also appreciated that one or more core layers may be sandwiched between the outer layers of the composite panel, the core layers varying in material depending upon the properties required from the panel.
  • the core layer may be a thermally insulating material.
  • construction panels There are many different types of building materials used as construction panels. For example one of the more commonly used construction panels is a compressed cement sheeting. There are inherent disadvantages associated with use of such a cement sheeting as will be explained hereinunder.
  • compressed cement sheeting is a relatively heavy building material to use as a facia panel in a building construction.
  • many other known building panels such as composite panels are also considered heavy and cumbersome to install as a building material or facia.
  • Installation costs associated with traditional building panels are also considered relatively high. For example the installation of a cement sheet requires the installer to screw the cement sheet in place and then fill the screw holes, the cement sheet then requiring painting at least three times. This leads to an increased installation time which in turn effects the overall cost of the building project. It is accepted throughout the building industry that an average worker can install five to six square meters of cement sheet per day.
  • a further disadvantage experienced with many of the above mentioned construction panels or cement sheet is the physical weight of the panel or sheeting.
  • an increased weight of a facia or building panel in turn requires a stronger structure or foundation which, as will be appreciated, increases the costs of the overall building structure. It is accepted that a one meter square area of nine millimetre compressed cement sheeting weighs approximately 18 kilograms. It is therefore desirable to provide a composite panel that is lightweight and easy to use.
  • the present invention provides a composite panel which obviates some of the manufacture and installation problems of traditional building or composite panels.
