Definitions
- This invention relates to a composite panel, in particular a composite panel which has a variety of uses such as a building material, as a panel or the like.
- Composite panels have been used for many years and will be familiar to many people, in particular builders and those who work in construction industries.
- composite panels comprise a multi-layer construction or, what is commonly referred to as a sandwich construction. It is also appreciated that one or more core layers may be sandwiched between the outer layers of the composite panel, the core layers varying in material depending upon the properties required from the panel.
- the core layer may be a thermally insulating material.
- construction panels There are many different types of building materials used as construction panels. For example one of the more commonly used construction panels is a compressed cement sheeting. There are inherent disadvantages associated with use of such a cement sheeting as will be explained hereinunder.
- compressed cement sheeting is a relatively heavy building material to use as a facia panel in a building construction.
- many other known building panels such as composite panels are also considered heavy and cumbersome to install as a building material or facia.
- Installation costs associated with traditional building panels are also considered relatively high. For example the installation of a cement sheet requires the installer to screw the cement sheet in place and then fill the screw holes, the cement sheet then requiring painting at least three times. This leads to an increased installation time which in turn effects the overall cost of the building project. It is accepted throughout the building industry that an average worker can install five to six square meters of cement sheet per day.
- a further disadvantage experienced with many of the above mentioned construction panels or cement sheet is the physical weight of the panel or sheeting.
- an increased weight of a facia or building panel in turn requires a stronger structure or foundation which, as will be appreciated, increases the costs of the overall building structure. It is accepted that a one meter square area of nine millimetre compressed cement sheeting weighs approximately 18 kilograms. It is therefore desirable to provide a composite panel that is lightweight and easy to use.
- the present invention provides a composite panel which obviates some of the manufacture and installation problems of traditional building or composite panels.
- a composite panel or the like comprising: a plurality of inner layers wherein at least two layers are each constructed of an upper and lower surface and a plurality of spaced walls connecting said upper and lower surfaces where at least one wall of one of said at least two layers is arranged substantially pe ⁇ endicular with respect to at least one wall of a further layer of said at least two layers; a first bonding means for bonding each layer to an adjacent layer in said plurality of inner layers; an upper and lower surface; and a second bonding means for bonding said upper and lower surface to said plurality of inner layers forming a substantially rigid multi-layered composite panel.
- a composite panel for use as. for example, a building or construction material as a panel or the like, the composite panel comprising: a plurality of sheets of fluted material having a series of substantially parallel channels defined by at least one surface and a plurality of spaced walls, where said sheets are arranged so that the longitudinal axis of their channels are substantially pe ⁇ endicular to each other; a first bonding means for bonding the fluted material sheets to one another; a plurality of sheets which form the outer layers of the composite panel; and a second bonding means for bonding said sheets of fluted material to the outer layers of the composite panel, forming a substantially rigid multi-layered panel.
- the sheet of fluted material is flute board, made from, for example a synthetic plastics material such as a polyethylene or a polypropylene.
- the outer layers of the composite panel are preferably made of any suitable material, for example a lightweight metal such as aluminium to provide rigidity.
- the outer layers of the composite panel may be a cloth material, paper, or the like.
- the sheets of the fluted material may be joined by any suitable bonding means such as an adhesive, or by the planer surfaces of the sheets being welded together.
- Figure 1 shows a diagrammatic view of a sheet of fluted material according to one embodiment of the invention
- Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view of a composite panel according to one embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 3 is an exploded diagrammatic view of a composite panel according to one embodiment of the invention.
- the composite panel 1 is constructed from a plurality of layers of various materials.
- the core layers of the composite panel 1 are constituted by juxtaposed elements 2 and 3 referred to hereinafter as flute board.
- the flute board comprises an upper surface 7 spaced from and substantially parallel to a lower surface 8.
- the upper and lower surfaces 7 and 8 are separated by a plurality of substantially parallel walls 9 which define the upper and lower surfaces, channels or flutes 4.
- Such flute material is well known in the art and will not be described in any further detail.
- the material is generally formed of a synthetic plastics material such as polyethylene or polypropylene, but may be made of any other suitable material including other synthetic plastics material, cardboard or paperboard or the like.
- sheets 2 and 3 are oriented with the longitudinal axis of the channels 4 being substantially pe ⁇ endicular to each other, and preferably at 90 degrees to each other.
- sheets 2 and 3 are joined by means of an adhesive. Bonded to the upper surface 7 of the upper sheet 2 and bonded to the lower surface 8 of the lower sheet 3 are outer layers 5 and 6 respectively.
- the composite panels so formed has substantially increased rigidity and strength due to the arrangement of the sheets and outer layers.
- the composite panel When in use, the composite panel can be used for many applications including as a facia in building constructions by fastening the panel to the structural elements of the building by means of screws or the like.
- the composite panel may have cloth outer layers and be used in office partitioning.
