Abstract

A process is disclosed for protecting a vehicle passenger who is not in a normal position during a crash. The passenger is protected by means of an airbag module with a gas bag deployed by hot gas under pressure which flows into the gas bag either directly or through a diffuser. According to the invention, when a passenger impacts the gas bag still in its deployment phase, the hot gas under pressure flowing into the gas bag is led towards at least one point of the gas bag where the gas bag is not fire-proofed and can be destroyed by the hot gas under pressure.

Description

Verfahren und Vorrichtung zum Schutz eines außerhalb der Normalposition befindlichen Fahrzeuginsassen im CrashfallMethod and device for protecting a vehicle occupant outside the normal position in the event of a crash
Beschreibungdescription
The invention relates to a method and a device for protecting a vehicle occupant located outside the normal position in the event of a crash according to the preamble of claim 1.
It is known to protect occupants of a motor vehicle in the event of a crash by means of an airbag. An airbag module has a gas source from which gas enters the previously folded gas bag in the event of a crash, as a result of which it is unfolded and forms a protective cushion between a vehicle part, such as the steering wheel, the dashboard or a side door, and the occupant.
A good protective effect is achieved if the occupant hits the gas bag after it has fully unfolded. This presupposes that the occupant occupies a normal position in the motor vehicle in which the upper body rests on the seat back. After the impact, the gas bag quickly collapses by the gas flowing out into the passenger compartment through at least one opening in the gas bag or through the gas bag fabric. The cross-section of the outflow opening or the gas permeability of the gas bag fabric is selected so that for the occupant sitting in the normal position in the motor vehicle, who collides with the gas bag in the event of a crash after the gas bag has been deployed, a safe "ride-down", ie, a safe take-up in the coinciding gas sack is secured. The gas bag must be so hard when the occupant hits it that puncture is avoided, but on the other hand it must not be so hard that the occupant is injured by the impact on the gas bag.
However, the airbag can become a source of danger for the occupant if it is "out of position" (oop), i.e. if it is e.g. bends forward. In this position there is a risk of the occupant colliding with the deploying airbag in the event of a crash, i.e. that he is shot by the gas bag and accelerated in the direction of deployment due to the membrane forces. In this case, the gas bag internal pressure assumes an increased value due to the unchanged gas delivery rate of the generator and the now reduced gas bag volume.
To eliminate this disadvantage, it is known from US Pat. No. 5,405,166 to fasten flexible parts to the gas bag in the region of outflow openings of the gas bag. These parts also have openings and are folded in the area of the tear seams. The openings of the gas bag and the flexible parts are aligned as long as the tear seams are intact. The additional parts and the tear seams are dimensioned such that the gas bag can only spread in the direction of the occupant up to a predetermined length in a first deployment phase. If an airbag occupant is shot from the airbag in this deployment phase, gas can flow out of the airbag through the openings mentioned, so that the gas pressure does not increase further, thereby reducing the risk of injury to the occupant.
If, on the other hand, the gas bag is not hindered in its unfolding by the occupant, the tear seams are torn open as a result of the increasing pressure in the gas bag, which causes move the parts against the gas bag wall. The outflow openings in the gas bag are also closed, so that the fully deployed gas bag has sufficient internal pressure.
The disadvantage of this arrangement is that up to a defined state of deployment of the gas bag, gas can continuously escape through the openings which are aligned with one another. The associated delayed deployment of the gas bag has a negative impact on the protection of an occupant in the normal position.
The invention is therefore based on the object of reducing the risk of injury to an out-of-position occupant while at the same time maintaining the full protective effects for an occupant in the normal position.
According to the invention this is achieved in accordance with the features of claim 1.
In a method for protecting a vehicle occupant located outside the normal position in the event of a crash, protection being provided by an airbag module with a gas bag which is deployed by hot compressed gas and the compressed gas flowing directly or with the interposition of a diffuser into the gas bag, the invention is based on the invention If the occupant collides with the gas bag, which is still in the deployment phase, the hot compressed gas flowing into the gas bag is directed to at least one point of the gas bag at which the gas bag has no flame protection and can be destroyed by the hot compressed gas.
In this method according to the invention, the openings required for the increased gas outlet in the oop case are only produced in the oop case itself by the hot gases emerging from the gas generator. Therefore, these openings do not have to be made when manufacturing the gas bag be provided. In the event that the gas bag can unfold unhindered by the occupant, the openings are not created.
In one embodiment, the gas bag stretching " is detected in the intended impact area of the occupant, and in the event that the gas bag stretching in the direction of the occupant has not yet ended when the gas bag strikes the occupant, a movable flame retardant with at least one opening for the passage of the hot will The compressed gas is positioned in such a way that the opening lies in front of the flame-retardant point of the gas bag. The impact of the occupant prevents the gas bag from expanding further in its direction. The opening thus remains in the area of the flame-retardant point of the gas bag and this is hot there Gases destroyed The hot gas can flow out of the gas bag through the opening formed in this way.
In the event that the occupant is in its normal position and that the gas bag can therefore unfold unimpeded, the length of time of the portion of the movable flame protection provided with the opening is so short that the gas bag does not burn through.
Vorzugsweise wird der Gassack im Eintrittsbereich des heißen Druckgases zerstört .The gas bag is preferably destroyed in the entry region of the hot compressed gas.
A device for protecting a vehicle occupant outside the normal position in the event of a crash, using an airbag module with a gas bag, a gas generator and a diffuser, is characterized in accordance with the invention in that at least one flame-retardant band unfolding with the gas bag is provided in the gas bag, and that the flame-retardant band at least one opening for the passage of the exiting from the gas generator Has gas in the direction of a flame retardant point of the gas bag.
It is expedient that one end of the flame retardant tape is fastened in the area of the gas generator or diffuser and is gathered or folded there, that this position is fixed by means of at least one tear seam, that the opening is provided above the tear seam in the flame retardant tape and that the other end of the flame retardant tape is fastened to the side of the gas bag facing the occupant, the flame retardant tape having a length which corresponds to the expansion of the fully expanded gas bag in the direction of the occupant and wherein it runs at a distance from the gas bag wall.
If an out-of-position occupant hinders the spreading of the gas bag in its direction, the flame retardant tape is fixed by the tear seams in the position in which the opening of the flame retardant tape is opposite the flame retardant point of the gas bag, so that the gas bag is hot at this point Gases is destroyed. In the event that the gas bag can spread unhindered in the direction of the occupant, the tear seams are torn open, so that the flame retardant tape can unfold to its full length. The opening of the sensor band is then only so briefly opposite the flame-retardant point of the gas bag that it cannot burn out. The hot gases then rather hit the flame-retardant tape at this flame-retardant point of the gas bag. This is also a sensor band, since the opening in it is positioned in front of the flame-retardant point of the gas bag depending on how the gas bag unfolds.
In a further embodiment, at least two tear seams of different strength are provided. This can be achieved that the opening after tearing a The tear seam is only partially opposite the flame-retardant point, so that the hot gas strikes the flame-retardant part of the gas bag and partly the flame-retardant point. This destroys the gas bag to a smaller extent, ie the additional outflow opening is smaller.
To further optimize the device according to the invention, the flame retardant tape can have a plurality of openings of different sizes in the direction of the occupant. The size of the openings in the direction of the occupant expediently decreases. The largest opening is assigned to the gas bag, which is still slightly unfolded. In this phase, the gas pressure in the gas bag and thus the membrane forces still increase sharply, so that a large opening is required for the sudden reduction in the gas bag pressure. In later stages of deployment, the pressure rise is less so that a smaller opening is sufficient to protect the occupant from injury.
In a further embodiment, the flame-retardant band is made in several parts, at least in sections, each part has at least one opening, each of which is assigned a flame-retardant point on the gas bag, and one end of each part is fastened at different points on the side of the gas bag facing the occupant.
The size and shape of the opening burned in the gas bag can be influenced not only by the size but also by the shape of the openings in the flame retardant tape. The openings are preferably rectangular, triangular or circular.
In a further embodiment of the invention it is provided that the flame retardant tape is guided over its entire width above and / or below the point at which the flame retardant is interrupted. This prevents the flame retardant tape from twisting and unwanted destruction of the gas bag in an advanced phase of tion excluded. Guide bands attached to the gas bag are preferably provided.

Fig. 9 eine weitere Ausführungsform in einem Schnitt entsprechend der Fig. 1.9 shows a further embodiment in a section corresponding to FIG. 1.
A gas generator (not shown) with a diffuser 3 is arranged in the gas bag and has openings 5 at its chimney-like region 4 projecting into the folding space for the outlet of the gases generated in the gas generator 3. In the region of the openings 5 of the diffuser, the gas bag has a flame protection 6, which is firmly connected to the gas bag and is interrupted at a point 7. Furthermore, a flame retardant tape 8 is provided, which is fastened at one end 8a in the area of the gas generator. The flame retardant tape 8 is folded next to the gas generator and the folded position is secured by tear seams 9. Above the folds, the flame retardant band 8 has an opening 10 in the region of the diffuser. This opening 10 lies in the folded position and when the gas bag unfolds until the tear seams 9 tear, it is opposite the flame-retardant point 7 of the gas bag.
As can be seen from FIG. 2, the other end 8b of the flame retardant band is connected to the part of the gas bag which is facing the occupant. At the beginning of the deployment of the gas bag, the part of the flame retardant band facing the occupant is pulled towards the occupant by the unfolding gas bag due to the attached end 8b. The folded portion of the flame retardant tape sewn by the tear seams 9 does not initially change its position. Even when the gas bag unfolds further, this folded section does not change its position, as can be seen from FIG. 3. If at this point in time the head 12 of an out-of-position occupant is shot through the gas bag, it can initially no longer spread in its direction, but rather unfolds laterally from the occupant, as can be seen from FIG. 3. This interruption of the unfolding process in the direction of the occupant is sufficient to destroy the gas bag through the opening 10 at the flame-retardant point 7 by the hot gas jet 11. As a result, the inner pressure of the gas bag and thus the dangerous membrane forces are abruptly reduced, so that the body parts of the occupant are no longer accelerated.
On the other hand, if the occupant is in a normal sitting position in which the upper body rests on the seat back, the airbag 1 can unfold freely. The opening 10 of the flame retardant tape 8 then does not last to destroy the gas bag at the flame-retardant point 7. In the fully unfolded position of the gas bag 1 (FIG. 4), in which the flame retardant band 8 is also unfolded after the tear seams 9 are torn, the opening 10 of the flame retardant band is located away from the gas jet 11 in the gas bag. The gas jet 11 now strikes the flame-retardant band 8 in the area of the flame-retardant point 7 of the gas bag, so that the gas bag does not burn out. The gas bag can thus fulfill its normal protective effect.
The size and shape of the location of the gas bag to be destroyed by the hot gases can be influenced by the size and shape of the opening 10 in the flame retardant band 8. FIGS. 5 to 7 show three different embodiments of the opening. 5, the opening consists of several small openings 10a, which are grouped in a triangular shape. 6 shows a single triangular opening 10b and FIG. 7 shows a rectangular opening 10c.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 8 with a multi-part flame retardant tape 13, this has sections 13a, b, c which lie next to one another perpendicular to the plane of the drawing and have openings 14a, 14b and 14c at different distances from the diffuser. These openings, which are also located next to one another, are also assigned flame-free locations on the gas bag which are not located in FIG. 8. The flame retardant tape is folded in the rest position, as described in the exemplary embodiment in FIG. 1, the folded position being secured by three tear seams (not shown) of different strength. In this embodiment, the risk of injury in different intermediate positions of the occupant can be reduced even better than in the embodiment according to FIG. 1, by tearing the tear seams one after the other with different internal pressures and the gas bag at correspondingly different ones flame retardant areas is destroyed. Depending on the state of deployment, the outflow cross section required for the pressure reduction is regulated via the number of openings effective for the gas bag to burn through.
In the exemplary embodiment in FIG. 9, guides 15, 16 for the flame-retardant strip 8 are arranged below and above the point 7 at which the flame-retardant 6 is interrupted, which guide the latter over its entire width. Tapes can be used as guides, which are attached to the gas bag 1 together with the flame protection 6. These guides prevent, in particular in an advanced phase of deployment, with the occupant in his normal sitting position, a possible twisting of the flame retardant tape at point 7. The twisting could result in the flame retardant tape no longer being at point 7 in this phase of deployment covers. The consequence would be an undesirable destruction of the gas bag. Although twisting of the flame retardant tape 8 is very unlikely, it is completely excluded by the guides 15, 16.
