Abstract

A polymeric buidling unit which is inexpensive and versatile comprises an extruded sheet having integral claw formations therebehind. The claw formations are adapted to receive, in one form, T-shaped complemental formations on adjacent units or connectors.

Description

INTERENGAGING BUILDING UNITS FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to iπtcrcngaging building units.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The prior an is replete wit examples of inteτengaging building units but these are generally restricted to moulded units andthesu are preferably of cemeuuliυus material.
is an objccl of the present invention to provide an extruded building unit which may be made from a polymeric material and which may be produced very inexpensively and which, in addition, is very easy to assemhlc and is also capable of great versatility.
THE INVENTION
According to the invention a building unit comprises an extruded sheet having integral cJaw formations therebehind, the claw formations being adapted to receive complemental formations on adJAceuL uniis ur υumiuϋUittJ. Thus, ihe coinplementøl formations may take the form of T-shupes.
In a preferred form of the invention the claw formations are included i rearwardly-tjxtending Htriitr. h<» ormati ns may ϋiflβ in o direction parallel with tlic slicel, or ut right angles, ι two or more formations may be provided to receive adjacent sheets and/or connectors at various angles.
In its jjjiipkut fcnui a aw fumiailoπ may be formed in the end of a panel (sheet.) and a complemental formation formed on a panel to be attached at right angles.
A variety of connectors may he provided in Ihe form of a T-shape in cross section, dumb Iwll-Rhaped in section, stud-shaped in section, double stud-shaped in section; and a variety of tubular members with one or more claw formations and or complemental formations as will he described more particularly below. EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
A mass of drawings are annexed hereto, all of which arc cross sectional views of units and connectors according to th invention.
In Figure 1 a simple form of the invention is depicted and comprises a sheet portion 10 with struts 12,14 the latter having a claw formation 16 which is able to receive a complemental formation 18 of an extruded connector 20. It will be appreciated that, instead of the connector 20. another sheet may be provided with a similar complemental formation.
The connector 20 may liave other complemental formations 24,26 (Figure 3), 28 (Figure 5), or one or more claw formations 30 (Figure 4).
Other connectors are shown in Figure (> which is stud-like in cross section. Figure 7 which is a double stud. Figure 8 which has four claw formations, Figure 9 which has hut a single complemental formation, Figure 10 which is dumb bell in cross section and Figure 1 1 which is simple T-shape.
The latter two connectors may be used in an arrangement as shown in Figure 12 where to units abut, ihe corresponding claw formations constituting a gap 34 of the same shape as the connector of Figure 10, whicli, when located in position comprises a lock. The gap 40 accepts a connector as in Figure 11 or it may accept any of connectors of Figures 2 to 7, 9 or 10. The gap 42 may likewise accept any of the plural ily of connectors or other sheet units.
In Figure 13, the unit has pair of claw formations 50. and has a rebate 54 so that it can he used as a door post. It will he appreciated that Figure 13 may he an extension of Figure 1.
In Figure 14 an elongated sheet unit is provided, the strut 60 having a pair of clow formations at right angles to one another.
Figure 15 is similar to Figure 13 hut without a rebate and Figure 16 provides ridges 66 against which plates of glass 67 may he located to be affixed by putty 68 for a double window. Figure 17 indicates one example of the versatility of the invention, using, far example, tlie uti s of Figure 12. These units 70,72 abut and will receive dumb bell connectors as described above. A unit 74 having two opposed clnw formations 76 interceded and abut to constitute a pair of gaps tor dumb bell connectors.
Figure 18 shows a simplified form of the invention. Panels 1 in the form of L-pieces are provided at eight end with claw formations to receive complemental formations 102 of adjacent -p ccs, thereby offering many possibilities of forming double walled structures.
Figure 19 is another example of the arrangement of Figure 17, υsints T-pϊeces 110 and also illustrating the use of panels 1 12 of reduced thickness with strengthening ribs 114.
Reverting to Figure 14 if it is inverted it can form a ceiling structure. The claw formation 62 can he used to receive a tHe support or a multi-unit support for a roof.
The connector of Figure 7 could be made from a rigid polymeric material, which may also be reinforced. This provides rigidity LO any chosen structure.
