Bei diesem neuen Bussystem geht es grundsätzlich darum, die Anschlüsse von Peripheriegeräten an einen PC nicht mehr wie bisher über einzelne, parallele Anschlüsse mit getrennten und oft unterschiedlichen Steckverbindersystemen vorzunehmen, sondern die Peripheriegeräte im wesentlichen seriell an eine gemeinsame Bus-Leitung anzuschließen, die über eine standardisierte Steckbuchse am Gehäuse des PC unmittelbar mit einer Leiterplatte (mother- board) des PC verbunden ist .
