Abstract

A liquid supply apparatus (1) has a receptacle (21) for containing a liquid to be supplied and air. Means such as a valve (51, 52) are provided for controlling the volume of air in the receptacle (21). Liquid is supplied in use through an outlet from the receptacle (21). The volume of air in the receptacle (21) is controlled, in order that the liquid supplied to the outlet is at negative pressure, while liquid is moved to the outlet.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 22 August 1997 (22.08.97); original claims 25-39 replaced by amended claims 25-38; remaining claims unchanged (3 pages)] between the interior volume of said container and the environment exterior to said container, an aperture penetrating through said casing and sealed against liquid ingress or egress by an impermeable pressure-transmitting membrane capable to expand and to reduce that volume of the container interior to both the membrane and the casing responsively to pressure differences across said membrane, which in use is at least partially filled with liquid, and wherein the maximum volume occupied by said membrane within said container is smaller than the interior volume of said container.
26. Apparatus according to claim 25, wherein said membrane has surface area greater than the minimum area enclosed by the seal that it forms with the walls of said conduit.
27. Apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the maximum volume occupied by said membrane within said container is larger than the interior volume of that portion of said conduit lying within said container.
28. Apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the maximum volume occupied by said membrane within said container is smaller than the interior volume of that portion of said conduit lying within said container.
29. Apparatus according to any of claims 25 to 28, and additionally comprising a removable seal capable to seal that opening of said conduit that is exterior to, or at the exterior surface of, said container.
30. Apparatus according to claim 27, wherein said seal is replaceable. 31. A method of liquid containment using the apparatus of claim 29, wherein said seal is applied and thereafter maintained in position sealing said conduit for as long as liquid is desirably maintained in said container.
32. A method of liquid containment wherein apparatus according to any of claims 25 to 30, is maintained in an orientation such that upper surface of said liquid remains at lower height than the height of the conduit opening that is open to the exterior of said container.
33. A method of liquid delivery wherein apparatus according to claim 27, is re-oriented from a first orientation in which upper surface of said liquid is at a height below the height of the conduit opening that is open to the exterior of the container to a second orientation such that upper surface of said liquid is displaced to a height below the height of said conduit opening and wherein the interior volume of that portion of said conduit interior to said container limits the maximum volumetric discharge of liquid from the container on said reorientation
34. A method of liquid delivery wherein apparatus according to claim 28, is re-oriented from a first orientation in which upper surface of said liquid is at a height below the height of the conduit opening that is open to the exterior of the container to a second orientation such that upper surface of said liquid is displaced to a height below the height of said conduit opening and wherein the maximum expansion of said membrane limits the maximum volumetric discharge of liquid from the container on said reorientation.
35. A method of liquid delivery using apparatus according to any of claims 25 to 30, wherein that end of said conduit which is exterior to said container is open and exposed to a pressure-reducing means such that the pressure at said conduit opening is lower than the pressure at that surface of said membrane exposed to said aperture and wherein that end of said conduit which is interior to said container is immersed in liquid contained therein.
36. A method of liquid delivery using apparatus according to claim 25 or claim 28, wherein that end of said conduit which is exterior to said container is open and exposed to a pressure-reducing means such that the pressure at said conduit opening is lower than the pressure at that surface of said membrane exposed to said aperture; wherein that end of said conduit which is interior to said container is immersed in liquid contained therein and further wherein the maximum volumetric expansion of said membrane limits the maximum volumetric discharge from said container.
37. A method of liquid delivery according to any of claims 32 to 36, wherein said pressure-reducing means comprises apparatus according to any of claims 2 to 24.
38. Apparatus according to any of claims 25 to 30 incorporating liquid supply apparatus according to any of claims 2 to 24.
