Abstract

Tracking lateral shift of a moving line feature by forming successive line scan images (21, 22) of a field extending transversely of and including the line feature (23), identifying a pixel, by scanning from one end of the image, possibly representative of the line feature but possibly due to noise, comparing the position of the identified pixel with the position of the identified pixel (23) on a previous image, and rejecting the pixel as noise if it is not within a tolerance range (24) based on the previous image. The method is used in directing a laser beam e.g. to cut lace, and inspection of the lace is also provided. A laser beam focusing device is provided which adapts for the optical path difference between different points on the surface as the beam is deflected. Cut edges of lace are inspected for 'excess cutting' (616) and 'cutting inside' (617) errors by imaging the edge and examining the image.
