Abstract

The objective of the invention is a storage box for e.g. CD-record covers or corresponding. The storage box is formed of a lower portion (2) made of a stiff and solid material, to which has been fitted an upper portion (1) forming three walls. The bottom of the lower portion (2) is also provided with means to obtain the upper portion (1) for the piling of the boxes on top of each other.

Description

STORAGE BOX AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME
The invention relates to a storage box for CD-covers or corresponding objects according to claim 1 and to the met¬ hod for producing the storage box according to claim 6.
There are several kinds box constructions on the market for storing CD-covers in order and tidy. In adequate storage boxes the CD-records are easily accessed, and such boxes or files are commonly used both in homes and offices.
One problem in producing such storage boxes has been to combine a pleasant appearance with a solid and durable construction in a profitable way. The distribution and storage of the boxes have also been difficult to handle due to big space requirements.
Storage boxes according to previously known techniques are generally made either of an injection moulded plastic cons¬ truction or a folded cardboard construction.
A solid plastic construction provides as such a useful high-quality box, with a firm and attractive appearance. The disadvantage is on the one hand the big space require¬ ment - in storage and distribution such boxes are fairly bulky - and on the other hand the limited possibilities to modify the appearance. Injected plastic cannot be printed with versatile company logos or texts. The plastic is throughout the same color, and the appearance can merely be improved by fixing different stickers on the outside of the box.
Manufactured, ready-assembled boxes of cardboard construc- tion have the same disadvantages regarding the space re¬ quirement. The appearance of the boxes can be made rather attractive and diversified by coating with printed paper, but the solidity of the box leaves a lot to be desired. Plastic welded box constructions, in which the interior board is surrounded by an elastic plastic construction, correspond to their usability to these cardboard boxes and have the same disadvantages.
A significant disadvantage of known boxes, in addition to the above mentioned ones, is a bad compatibility with other boxes. The consumer prefers to purchase boxes along with the growth of e.g. the CD-collection. Previously known boxes cannot be combined into one solid entirety, but the boxes have to be stored on the desk or in the bookshelf as separate pieces.
The objective of the invention is to solve the problems related to previously known techniques in a production technically easy, simple, profitable and economic way. The aim of the invention is especially to provide a method and a practical storage box produced by the method, which sto¬ rage box has an attractive appearance and can be modified in many ways, which is solid and durable, and requires fairly little space during storage and transportation. The aim of the invention is moreover to provide a method and a storage box produced by the method which can be combined or piled with other boxes into a solid and uniform entirety. To its basic structure the invention utilizes the technique according to the Finnish patent application No. 942619 by utilizing it in a new application and by adding to this technique new technical realizations.
The main characteristics of the invention are disclosed in claim 1. The idea of the invention is to combine in the storage box the fixed bottom portion, which gives the construction the required solidity and stability, and the folding upper portion (back and side portion of the box) , the appearance of which can favorably be made quite attrac- tive by attaching several boxes on top of each other. The boxes or folders are assembled into ready boxes only when taken into use, wherefore the space requirement for the boxes before that is fairly small. In one preferable form of embodiment of the invention the bottom portion of the box or the folder comprises one in¬ jection moulded plastic part, and the upper part comprises the folded cover which is made by the so called glue-cover method. The interior board of the upper portion comprises favorably one uniform folded board body. In a preferable form of embodiment the bottom portion is provided along the outer edge with a uniform groove into which the upper por¬ tion is slipped and fixed when the box is assembled. The bottom portion is provided with a corresponding groove underneath, by means of which the boxes can be attached to each other. The fixing of the upper and lower portions to each other is implemented by a friction joint, which well can be secured by projections extending to the groove, which projections are pressed into the upper portion mate¬ rial when pressing the upper portion into the groove.
The advantage of the invention compared to previously known technique is i.a. that it produces a fairly solid box construction, which can be assembled by the user only when taken into use. This is a considerable advantage for the transportation, distribution and storage; the boxes can e.g. well be sent as small-size mail dispatches. The making of the bottom portion of e.g. injection moulded plastic provides favorably the required solidity and stiffness. The manufacturing method according to the invention enables also the use of an attractive material for the upper porti¬ on, e.g. a four-color printed and laminated board construc¬ tion assembled by the glue-cover method.
The user's CD-collection increases with time. The advantage of the invention compared to known solutions is especially that the storage boxes can be acquired according to current need, but the storage boxes acquired later can be attached to the previous ones to form a uniform entirety.
An essential advantage of the invention compared to known technique is moreover that the box is extremely suitable to be used as companies' "advertising pillars". The upper part of the box, which is the most visible part, can favorably be provided with high-quality printing, notices, etc.
The invention is below described with reference to the enclosed drawing, the figures of which present one prefera¬ ble form of embodiment of the invention. In the drawing fig. 1 presents a basic drawing of one box according to invention, formed by combining two box portions; - fig. 2 presents an enlargement of the lower part of the box according to fig. 1, and the section A-A presents the cross section A-A of fig. 2.
In fig. 1 the reference number 1 shows the upper portion of the box. The reference number 2 refers to one lower portion according to the invention, provided on both sides with the groove 3 into which the upper portion 1 is slipped. The reference number 4 indicates the groove projection into which the upper portion 1 is attached when slipped into the groove 3.
The lower portion 2 is made of injection moulded plastic. The groove 3 is dimensioned according to the thickness of the upper portion 1 so that the fixing of the portions 1 and 2 essentially is made by a friction joint. In order to secure the joint, a suitable amount of projections 4 have been formed in the groove 3 at the injection moulding, which further secure the durability of the joint.
The groove 2 can favorably be arranged so that the interior wall of the groove is provided with an opening in the corner, which facilitates the mounting of the upper portion into the groove.
The upper portion 1 is preferably made by the so called glue-cover method so that the interior board of the upper portion consists of one uniform folded board body. The assembly method of the storage box has been disclosed above. The essential point is that the box can be assembled without special tools, whereby the assembling well can be left to be performed by the end-user.
When a storage box according to the invention is made for storing CD-record covers, the CD-records should preferably be piled in the storage box on top of each other, by which the dimensioning of the storage box enables to access the CD-record from the front to pull it out. For this it is generally sufficient that the storage box is 5-10 mm shor¬ ter than the CD-cover in depth. The height of the storage box is dimensioned so that there is space for a suitable amount of CD-records on top of each other.
The lower portion 2 can preferably be formed so that the user easily has access also to the lowest CD-record. This is e.g. implemented so that a piece is slotted from the outward extruding portion of the lower portion.
The invention is not restricted to the form of embodiment presented, but several modifications and embodiments are possible within the scope of the enclosed claims. Instead of injection moulded plastic, the lower portion 2 can be made of some other suitable sufficiently solid material.
The upper portion 1 can be made of some other elastic mate¬ rial, e.g. plastic. Instead of the moulded projections 4, the friction joint can be secured by some other as such known fixing method, e.g. rivets or nails. The upper porti- on can also be glued to the lower portion 2 within the scope of the claims.

Claims

1. A storage box for storing CD-record covers or correspon- ding objects, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the sto¬ rage box comprises a lower portion (2) made of a stiff and solid material, to which lower portion is attached an upper portion ( 1) bounded in three directions and made of an elastic material, in which the lower portion (2) is so formed that it can be attached to another similar storage box from its bottom.
2. A storage box according to claim 1, c h a r a c t e r ¬ i z e d in that the upper portion ( 1) comprises a folded uniform piece, preferably a coated board made by the glue- cover method, in which the interior board of the box con¬ sists of one uniform folded board body.
3. A storage box according to one of the claims above, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the lower portion (2) is made of injection moulded plastic.
4. A storage box according to one of the claims above, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the fixing of the upper portion (1) to the lower portion (2) is implemented by forming into the lower portion a groove (3) , into which the upper portion (1) is mounted by friction fixing.
5. A storage box according to claim 4, c h a r a c t e r - i z e d in that the fixing of the upper portion (1) to the lower portion (2) is secured by projections (4) extending to the groove (3), by adhesive, nails or corresponding methods.

A storage box according to one of the claims above, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the bottom of the lower portion (2) is provided with a similar fixing arrangement as the upper portion (1) so that upper portions (1) can be attached to the lower portion (2) from both sides in order to form a multibox storage box.
7. A method for producing a storage box according to one of the claims above, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the box is made by mounting an upper portion (1) made of an elastic material to a stiff base (2), preferably so, that the upper portion (1) is placed in the groove formed in the lower portion (2) .
8. A method according to claim 6, c h a r a c t e r ¬ i z e d in that the fixing to each other of the portions (1, 2) is made by a friction joint.
9. A method according to one of the claims 6-7, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the friction joint is secured by adhesive, nails, or by projections placed in the groove.
10. A method according to one of the claims 6-9 above, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the storage box is made into a multibox by piling the storage boxes on top of each other so that the box above is fixed to the box below by placing the upper portion (1) of the box below into the bottom groove (3) or corresponding formed in the lower portion (2) of the box above.
