Abstract

When displaying the charge status of a battery, it is not the nominal capacity of the battery which needs to be considered but the actual capacity available, i.e. the maximum amount of electricity which can actually be stored in the battery. The capacity, measured in ampere hours, decreases however due to ageing, as well as depending on how the battery was charged, and the invention therefore calls for the value taken as the capacity to be updated.

Description

Display zur optischen Anzeige des Ladezustands einer wiederaufladbaren Batterie Display for visual indication of the state of charge of a rechargeable battery
The invention relates to a display for the optical display of the state of charge of a rechargeable battery which is used to feed the drive motor of a lawnmower and to indicate the amount of electricity still available, which is proportional to the working time, by means of a plurality of light-emitting diodes or LCDs Display elements.
Optical display devices that make the state of charge of a rechargeable battery recognizable have become known in a wide variety of designs. DE 41 10 777 AI describes a circuit arrangement for measuring and displaying the available capacity of an accumulator. The currently available capacity of the battery can be read on a display. The charging capacity can be repeated by the connected electrical device via a request signal with each charging process, so that the capacity quantity can be recalibrated manually by pressing a button or in a time-controlled manner. As a result, a relatively precise display of the remaining capacity of the battery is possible even if the available charge capacity decreases as the age decreases.
The measured residual capacity value is shown on the display by a bar graph and digitally. A flashing signal display is not provided.
Here, the available parameters are processed in a microprocessor in a complex manner and displayed on a monitor. Programs and data specific to the battery or device are stored on the system on a memory. DE-G 89 11 531 describes an instrument for displaying the state of discharge of batteries. In this case, an LCD module is arranged in the display panel, which has a plurality of elongated electrodes arranged one above the other for the level-like display of different running states. When the state of charge decreases, the individual electrodes are gradually switched off from top to bottom, the circuit being such that when the discharge limit is reached, beyond which discharge is undesirable, only the last electrode is switched on.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive display device, the user of a cordless lawn mower (or a similar garden tool) the information necessary for the work process clearly and clearly transmitted.
The stated object is achieved by the features specified in the characterizing part of claim 1.
This display makes the operator of the lawnmower visually recognizable in an impressive manner the state of charge of the battery, and important information is also transmitted by the flashing elements. The flashing symbol display element shows that the battery is being charged continuously and that the charging process is not interrupted by a power interruption or shutdown of the mains supplying the charger. This symbol display element is therefore only effective during the charging process by flashing and provides the user with important information.
Another important piece of information is provided to the user by the flashing of the last LCD display element, which informs the user that the battery is almost empty. The transition to the flashing display is clear to the user recognizable, so that he can abort the work process in good time and protect the battery from deep discharge by charging the battery in good time. An expedient embodiment of the display results from claim 2, according to which the symbol display element changes the display state when full charge is reached and emits a continuous flashing signal.
An embodiment of a display for displaying the state of charge is described below with reference to the drawing. The single figure of the drawing schematically shows such a display device with four display elements 1 - 4 and a symbol display element 5. In the drawing, the displays corresponding to the specified operating states are shown in the lines one above the other. The display elements can be light-emitting diodes or LCDs that light continuously or flash.
Line 1 illustrates the condition when fully charged. In the event of a charge drop, one display element goes out after the other, and when the battery is almost empty (line 5), the last display element 1 starts to flash. No display element is visible when the battery is empty (line 6).
When charging (line 2), one display element after the other is switched on, the symbol display element 5 flashing. In the fully charged position according to line 3, all four display elements are visible and the symbol element lights up continuously.
When cutting the grass (line 4) one element after the other runs out, as indicated here.
A circuit arrangement assigned to the display measures the course of the current during the discharge and the charging current during the charging process. The total value of these current profiles is compared with the battery capacity and a corresponding number of display elements light up in each case.
