Description

METHOD OF TREATMENT TO OBTAIN PROTECTION AGAINST PESTS AND TO INHIBIT GERMINATIONTOGETHERWITHMEANSFORTHESEPURPOSES
The present invention relates to a method, with the help of means, for treating plants or products derived therefrom, habitats, growing chambers, storage chambers, soil, stored parts of plants, oils, technical emulsions and other technical products in order to obtain protection against pests and/or to inhibit germination in plants.
Previously disclosed is the use of methods involving all types of chemical substances with a more or less harmful effect on the environment to treat plants for the purpose of obtaining protection against pests and/or inhibiting germination of specific plants.
The principal object of the present invention is thus, in the first instance, to find a method which is environmentally friendly and also functions effectively with the desired result.
Said object is achieved by means of a method in accordance with the present invention, which is characterized essentially in that means are used in the form of a plant species belonging to at least one or other of the families:
Populus,
Mentha,
Ribes
Allium, Tagetes and
Valeriana.
The means used in previously disclosed methods are not all that environmentally friendly, amongst other things. A further object of the invention is thus to find a means which, amongst other things, solves the above- mentioned problems effectively
The aforementioned further object is achieved by a means in accordance with the present invention, which is characterized essentially in that it contains a plant species belonging to at least one or other of the families: Populus, Mentha, Ribes
Allium, Tagetes and Valeriana
A method involving the use of means to treat plants or products derived therefrom, habitats, growing chambers, storage chambers, soil, stored parts of plants, oils, technical emulsions and other technical products in order to obtain protection against pests and/or to inhibit the germination of plants or products produced therefrom comprises, in accordance with the present invention, means in the form of plant species belonging to at least one of the families: Populus, Mentha, Ribes, Allium, Tagetes and Valeriana.
The invention thus relates to a method, with the help of plant material from specific plant species or components isolated therefrom, for treating the intended products in order to achieve the desired effects, in conjunction with which the methods used involve the use of means of varying form. According to one embodiment, a method is used involving means comprising plant material in whole or comminuted form, or parts and mixtures thereof, for example roots, bulbs, stems, leaves, buds, branches, flowers or seeds. It is also possible to use a method involving means in the form of fresh or dried material from whole plants or selected parts of a plant and/or mixtures of plants. A further embodiment of a method involves the use of means in the form of non-fractionated extracts or distillates, concentrated, diluted or mixtures thereof, from whole plants or selected parts of plants.
The invention also includes a method in which means are used in the form of active fractions of extracts o distillates, concentrated, diluted or mixtures thereof, from whole plants or selected parts of plants.
Finally, the invention includes a method in which it is possible to use means in the form of volatile substances from plant material.
Treatment thus denotes one or more of the following method stages:
Treatment by the addition of plant material o various occasions during the year to the storage containers of stored plant products, for example silos, storehouses, boxes, sacks, bags or some other storage chamber. The plant material used may thus be in direct contact with the intende stored products or in gaseous or aerosol form in the atmosphere inside the aforementioned storage containers. Treatment by the addition of plant material t a growing crop in a chamber, a glasshouse or a field, in conjunction with which the aforementioned plant material may be in direct contact with the crop to be protected, or in gaseous or aerosol form in the atmosphere around the plants to be protected, or applied at an appropriate distance from them as an attractant for pests.
Treatment by adding plant material to, or by growing crops in the soil in which protection against pests is to be achieved. Treatment by the addition of plant material to oils, emulsions and other technical preparations for the purpose of preventing or inhibiting the development of micro¬ organisms therein. Examples of the application of the method for the purpose of inhibiting germination may involve one or other of the following method stages:
Treatment of potato tubers, overwintering parts of edible bulbs or ornamental plants, or unprocessed or processed plant material and the cultivation and storage chambers for the plant material where the spores from micro¬ organisms are present, in order to bring about their inhibited germination, in order permanently or temporarily to prevent the growth of sprouts from the tubers, for the purpose of permanently or temporarily preventing the growth of leaves of flower buds from the aforementioned overwintering parts.
Examples of the application of the method to achieve protection against pests by using plant material with a fungistatic/fungicidal or a bacteriostatic/ bactericidal effect may involve one or other of the following method stages:
Treatment with plant material with a fungistatic/fungicidal or a bacteriostatic/ bactericidal effect by: treatment of potato tubers in their storage, transport and keeping areas in order to inhibit attack by skin diseases and rotting diseases in potatoes; treatment of root crops or onions in their storage, transport and keeping areas in order to inhibit attack by storage diseases in the root crops or onions; treatment of plants or parts of plants in their cultivation, transport, storage and keeping areas in order to inhibit mould formation on the aforementioned plants or parts of plants and/or in the premises and ventilation system concerned; or treatment of emulsions and cutting oils in order to prevent the formation and growth of micro-organisms therein. Examples of the application of the method as an insecticide, acaricide and/or repellent/attractant may involve one or other of the following method stages:
Treatment of cultivated or wild plants or their habitat with plant material with an inhibiting, killing, repellent or attractant effect in order to counteract attack by harmful insects or mites, or to counteract grazing and gnawing damage caused by other animals.
Example 1 relates to treatment in carrot crops in order to inhibit attack by the carrot fly (Psila) and the soil fly (Agrotis) .
Example 2 relates to treatment in cabbage crops in order to inhibit attack by the cabbage fly (Delia) , butterflies/moths (Pieris, Plutella, Mamestra and Agrotis) , and weevils (Ceutorhynchus) .
Example 3 relates to treatment when cultivating beetroot, onions and potatoes in order to inhibit soil fly (Agrotis) .
Examples of the application of the method as a nematicide relate to the treatment of soil in order to inhibit the attack by nematodes of crops under cultivation in the aforementioned soil.
Means in accordance with the present invention for the purpose of applying the method in accordance with the same invention include plant species belonging to at least one of the following families: Populus, Mentha, Ribes, Allium, Tagetes and Valeriana, and preferably incorporating plant material, for example oil from the Populus family. The invention is not restricted to the illustrative example described above, but may be varied within the scope of the Patent Claims without departing from the idea of invention.
