Abstract

A process for making an intermetallic compound or composite by powder metallurgy, said process comprising a first step of mechanical smearing metal powders, preferably in a ball mill or equivalent device. In a preferred embodiment, Al2O3 is coated or smeared over Fe and/or Al. In a further step, the powder is subject to hot isostactic pressing (HIP), preferably by applying a non-uniform rise in temperature and pressure.
