Description

WARNING APPARATUS FOR MOBILE TELEPHONE SYSTEMS
The present invention relates to a warning apparatus for mobile telephone systems as defined in the preamble of claim 1.
On public premises, the use of mobile telephones is in some cases totally forbidden, or it causes needless disturbances in certain situations. However, notifying everyone present on such premises about the prohibition even if nobody is using a mobile telephone is superfluous and constitutes in itself a needless disturbance.
The object of the present invention is to achieve a co - pletely new type of apparatus for warning mobile telephone users when the use of a mobile telephone causes distur¬ bances or is forbidden.
According to the attached claims, the warning apparatus of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a voice system containing a stored message relating to a restric¬ tion or prohibition of the use of mobile telephones, said message being announced upon detection of an active mobile telephone by the apparatus.
Using the apparatus of the invention, users of mobile tele¬ phones can be very effectively warned that the use of a mo¬ bile telephone is not allowed on the premises concerned or that its use is subject to certain restrictions. The mes- sage can be freely selected.
In the following, the invention is described in detail by the aid of an example by referring to the attached figure, which presents an according to the invention.
The apparatus comprises a receiver (RX) 1 designed to re¬ ceive transmission signals (SIGNAL) from mobile telephone. The receiver is connected to a detector (DET) 2 which de- tects the presence of a mobile telephone signal. The detec¬ tor is connected to a comparator (COMP) 3, which compares the detection signal obtained from the output of the detec¬ tor 2 with a specified limit value. To permit the limit value to be set, the comparator 3 is provided with a set¬ ting device, e.g. a potentiometer R. The comparator 3 is connected to a first drive (DRINE1 ) 4, which acts as a switch. The first drive 4 is further connected to a second drive (DRIVE2) 5. The second drive 5 controls a signal light L, e.g. an LED, of the switch. In addition, the sec¬ ond drive 5 is connected to a voice drive (VOICE) 6, which according to the invention controls the announcements to be given based on detection of active mobile telephones. Con¬ nected to the voice drive 6 are a speaker 7, a microphone (MIC) 8, a record/play switch (REC/PLAY) 9 and a test switch 10. All the components described above, with or without a power source, can be placed in the same box, measuring e.g. 15 cm (height) x 10 cm (width) x 5 cm (depth) .
The receiver 1, implemented without oscillators to avoid producing interference transmission, receives signals transmitted in a mobile telephone frequency range, which is several hundred MHz, e.g. in the GSM network 900 MHz. The receiver can be provided with the required aerial circuits and appropriate amplifier circuits. Based on the telephone signals received by the receiver 1, the detector 2 outputs a detection signal into the comparator 3.
The comparator 3 acts as a selector designed to select from the telephone transmissions detected by the detector 2 the right signals for the warning messages of the warning appa¬ ratus. This is done by comparing the level of transmission intensity of the transmission received to a specified ref- erence value. The reference level is so chosen that only a mobile telephone active within a desired area or space, sending by means of its transmitter a telephone signal of a frequency in the operating frequency range of mobile tele- phones, e.g. 900 MHz. The desired space may be a whole building, such as a hospital, an aeroplane's saloon, or a corresponding space susceptible to interference from mobile telephone transmissions. Moreover, the selection level can be set according to the space by means of the potentiometer R e.g. in such a way that, instead of the whole building, only a part of the building, such as a given floor, is se¬ lected.
The voice drive unit 6 comprises a sound recording device, which may be a speech synthesizer or a tape recorder, and the required controllers and amplifiers for the speaker 7, microphone 8 and switches described above. The microphone 8 can be used to record a desired message, e.g. "Use of mo- bile telephones is forbidden in this hospital", in the voice drive unit 6, whereafter it can be announced via the speaker 7 as a plain-language announcement in given situa¬ tions as necessary. Selector switch 9 is used to select the desired operation mode, record or play, i.e. recording or announcing. The announcement is tested by means of the test switch 10.
The action of the apparatus is as follows: Upon detecting a mobile telephone transmission, the detector 2 outputs a de- tection signal to the comparator 3. The comparator 3 deter¬ mines whether the mobile telephone is within the selected operating area of the warning apparatus. If it is, the com¬ parator further outputs a control signal. The control sig¬ nal turns on the signal light L and causes the voice drive unit to give a desired announcement via the speaker 7. There may be several announcements, and they can be modi¬ fied via the microphone 8 as necessary. If desired, the ap¬ paratus can be connected to an external speaker as well to voice the warning announcement over a larger area.
It is obvious to a person skilled in the art that different embodiments of the invention are not restricted to the ex- ample described above, but that they may instead be varied in the scope of the following claims.
