Abstract

A transmission device comprising a central pulley (8) rigid with two pulleys (7, 7') mounted on free wheels and engaging corresponding belts (6, 6') engaged by two pulleys (1, 1'), each of which is driven with reciprocating motion by a lever (4, 4'), the belts (6, 6') also engaging in opposite directions two mutually rigid pulleys (11, 11').

Description

TRANSMISSION DEVICE
This invention relates to a transmission device. The object of the invention is to provide a transmission device which enables reciprocating motion imparted to two separate pulleys by levers to be converted into circular motion of a driven shaft.
This and further objects which will be more apparent from the following description are attained according to the invention by a transmission device comprising a central pulley rigid with two pulleys mounted on free wheels and engaging corresponding belts engaged by two pulleys, each of which is driven with reciprocating motion by a lever, the belts also engaging in opposite directions two mutually rigid pulleys. The present invention is further clarified hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic side view of a transmission device according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough. As can be seen from the figures the device of the invention comprises two sprocket wheels 1,1', each keyed onto mutually coaxial but separate corresponding shafts 2,2' which are each mounted in bearings 3,3' and also have keyed thereon a pedal crank 4,4' provided at its end with a pedal 5,5'.
The two sprocket wheels 1,1' rotate two chains 6,6' driving two free wheels 7,7' which are rigid with a single central ring gear 8 mounted on a shaft 9. By means of a chain 12 said central ring gear 8 rotates a pinion 13 rigid with the shaft 14 of a rotatable element such as a bicycle wheel, a propeller etc.. In particular, the chains 6,6' engage corresponding chain tensioners 10,10' mounted in slotted holes 16 and also engage in opposite directions two coaxial sprocket wheels 11,11' made mutually rigid by a shaft 15.
The transmission system is operated by alternately pressing on the pedal cranks 4,4' in that a variable angular movement in one direction, for example anticlockwise, of the pedal crank 4' provides a corresponding angular clockwise movement of the other pedal crank 4 by virtue of the fixed coupling between the sprocket wheels 11,11'. In the same manner the reciprocating motion of the sprocket wheel 1' deriving from the angular movement of the pedal crank is converted into continuous circular motion of the free wheel 7' and of the ring gear 8 rigid therewith, and hence of the pinion 13.
When the thrust action on the pedal crank 4' is completed, the thrust is exerted on the other pedal crank 4 to again convert the reciprocating motion into circular motion of the free wheel 7 and at the same time to return the pedal crank 4' into its raised position for a further thrust action.
From the aforegoing it is apparent that the transmission device of the invention has numerous advantages, and in particular:
- it can be used as a propulsion device for a bicycle and in particular it is simple to use by persons who have lost the use of one leg, in that after being secured to the pedal crank the healthy leg can be used to push and raise a single pedal crank,
- it can be used as a propulsion device for a canoe; in this case the boat propeller is rigidly connected to the driven shaft and the two pedal cranks are longitudinally aligned, to be used either by a single rower or by two opposite rowers.
In a further embodiment not shown in the drawings the lateral surface of the ring gear 8 is toothed and is coupled to a bevel gear mounted on a shaft.
