Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a method for con ⁇ ditioning of freezing frame liners used for freezing fresh food products, in particular fish, in cardboard lined freezing frames, said liners consisting of punched and preferably paraffin coated sheets of cardboard pre ⁇ pared with folding lines for forming a bottom panel and wall panels upstanding therefrom, the liner also com ⁇ prising a lid panel having wall or skirt flaps along its free edges, and at least some of said wall panels being shaped with projecting corner flaps at the side edges, so that at each corner there is a corner flap, which can be folded out from the side edge of one of the wall panels at the corner, and which, by one or more carton bridges between perforations in the cardboard, is in connection with the side edge of the adjacent wall panel at the corner.
  • the production of the liners essentially comprises the following operations: Punching of the liners, em ⁇ bossing of folding lines, prefolding, paraffin coating, stacking and packaging.
  • the respective liner blanks are conveyed at rela ⁇ tively high speed between the individual operations, for which reason it is of great importance that no parts are present on the liners that can be caught and thereby disturb the conveying.
  • the paraffin coating is made on a plain surface to achieve a uniform surface coating on the cardboard li ⁇ ner.
  • the corner flaps are fastened to the wall panels by the said carton bridges across respective perforation lines.
  • the liners are stacked in small stacks of 30-50 pieces and bundled by a pair of plastic straps. The stacks are then palletized and stored or shipped to consumers.
  • the carton bridges between the corner flaps and the wall panels be torn, so that the wall panels can be raised and the corner flaps can be folded in along the edges of the erected wall panels in connection with the mounting of the liner in a freezing frame.
  • stacks of liners are pretreated in a way by which the carton bridges are broken in an effective and well controlled manner.
  • an appa ⁇ ratus on or inside which the stacks can be centred accurately with respect to proper tool means for carry ⁇ ing out the breaking, in principle regardless of the means used.
  • a good grip of the blanks is estab ⁇ lished it is possible, with the use of precision guides or appropriate tools, to exert a quite powerful action on a multiple of liners at the time, without any risk of causing the damages that may occur by the uncontrolled manual breaking of the bridges.
  • the operation can be carried out rapidly so that the apparatus can meet the demands of a large production capacity.
  • the use of cutting tools could be considered, e.g. cutting bands, filament cutting or cutting with a suitable liquid, but according to the invention it is preferred to use the same kind of impact as exerted by the manual method, i.e. a bending effect, by which the carton bridges are torn apart. It has been found that the material is sufficiently stable to enable such a bending of the corner flaps even on a larger stack of liners by a simple pressing action on one side, as the flaps can slide on each other, such that with a small mutual displacement the flaps can be folded to an inclined position, while remaining in a column perpendicular to the plane of the liner blanks.
  • the invention also comprises an apparatus according to claims 4-9.
  • the breaking opera ⁇ tions on the carton stacks can be performed correctly and quite rapidly, whereby the apparatus can operate at a high capacity.
  • the pressure tools are preferably controlled so as to describe an arched move ⁇ ment.
  • a stack of liners produced in accordance with the invention, where the carton bridges between the wall panels and the corner flaps are broken beforehand, is advantageous for the final user of the liners, as the liners can be mounted in the freezing frame in a quicker and correct manner, with significantly reduced manual contact with the liner.
  • Fig. 1 is a top view of a liner blank with unbroken carton bridges
  • Fig. 2 the same mounted as a liner in a freezing frame.
  • Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an apparatus according to the invention.
  • FIG. 4 the same, shown with a stack of liners
  • Fig. 5 is a detailed view of a stack of liners, where the bridges between the corner flaps and the wall panels are broken.
  • a freezing frame liner used for freezing fresh goods in carton-lined freezing frames consists of a punched blank of cardboard with a coating of paraffin or the like on both sides.
  • a blank as shown in Fig. 1 has a tray bottom panel 2 confined by folding lines 4 and extended beyond these into a front wall panel 6, opposed lateral wall panels 8 and a rear wall panel 10, the latter continuing in a lid panel 12, which is extended across folding lines 4 into a front skirt flap and opposed lateral skirt flaps 16.
  • the front and rear wall panels 6 and 10 of the tray portion have laterally pro ⁇ jecting end or corner flaps 18 and 20 respectively, which, by carton bridges 22 between perforations of the blank, is in connection with the lateral side wall pa ⁇ nels 8.
  • the carton bridges 22 between the corner flaps and the side wall panels 8 are necessary for the mecha ⁇ nical handling of the blank without problems during manufacturing, and for the provision of the paraffin coating on the inner and outer surfaces of the blank.
  • the blank is used as a lining in a freezing frame after breaking of the said carton bridges 22, the blank as shown in Fig. 2 being placed over such a frame 24, shown in dotted lines, with the tray bottom panel 2 placed over the inner opening of the frame, whereafter the panel 2 is pressed downwards in the frame, causing the wall panels 6, 8, 10 to be fully erected, while the lid section is folded out from of frame. Thereafter the frame 24 is ready to be filled and passed to freezing with the lid section closed. After freezing, the block packing is knocked out of the frame, now ready for de ⁇ livery.
  • the apparatus shown in Fig. 3 for breaking said carton bridges 22 comprises a mainly horizontal support surface 26 consisting of a belt conveyor, the belts of which are supported by longitudinal carrier ribs 30, for 96/05958 PCI7DK95/00342
  • the support surface 26 has four openings 32, defined by the edge plates 34 and 36 as shown.
  • the edges 34 are flush with the folding lines 4 between the liner bottom panel 2 and the wall panels 6 and 10, respectively, and are positioned exactly under the perforated lines in which the carton bridges 22 occurs, whilst the edges 36 are flush with the folding lines 4 of the corner flaps 18 and 20, respectively, when a stack of liners is placed in a centred position on the support surface between tiltable end stops 29, 31.
  • an actuator 38 is provided, orientated transversely of the belts 16, the movable end of said actuator comprising a rondel 40, which may thus be displaced towards the middle of the carrying surface 26.
  • each cross beam 44 On each side of the actuators 38, fastened to the sides of the conveyor, two opposite uprights 42 are provided, connected with each other at the upper ends by cross beams 44. Beneath each cross beam 44, near each upright 42, there is, at the end of articulated rod connections 46, suspended a vertically displaceable beam 48, these beams being guided in the side direction by means of sliding jaws 50 engaging the sides of the up ⁇ rights 42.
  • the articulated rod connections 46 at each side of the carrying surface 26 are mutually connected by actuators 52 operable to effect a vertical movement of the beam 48, cf. Fig. 3.
  • each beam 48 On each beam 48, at the middle of the opposite sides thereof and near the lower side there is provided two pivotally mounted, from pivots 53 upwardly and out ⁇ wardly inclined projecting flat iron pieces 54.
  • the outer free ends 56 of these flat iron pieces are in ⁇ clined downwardly and are connected to the beams 44 by means of vertically oriented actuators 58.
  • the flat iron pieces 54, 56 By actuation of the actuators 58 the flat iron pieces 54, 56 will describe an arched movement between an upper free posi ⁇ tion and a lower position, where the lower sides of the free ends of the pieces 54,56 are located in the openings 32.
  • the free ends 56 of the flat pieces are on their lower side provided with a wedge 60, the taller side of which faces away from the carrying surface 26.
  • each of the openings 32 and underneath the car ⁇ rying surface 26 there is provided a rectangular, dis ⁇ placeable piston 62, the sides of which engage the edges 34, 36.
  • These pistons 62 are displaceable by actuators 64 between a lower rest position below the carrying sur ⁇ face 26 and an upper position in a predetermined level.
  • the machine In use, the machine is supplied with a stack of liners at its rear end 17, with the lid skirt flap 14 at the front.
  • the stack is forwarded by the belt conveyor 16 to a position underneath the raised pressure beams 48 until the front end of the lid skirt flap hits against the tiltable upstanding stops 29 at the front end of the machine, whereafter the corresponding tiltable stops 31 at the rear end of the machine are raised.
  • the actuators 38 are activated automatically, whereby the rondels 40 push the stack in position so that the corner flaps 18, 20 are positioned exactly over the openings 32.
  • the flat iron pieces 54 are immediately thereafter swung up to the inactive position, and the pistons 62 are briefly pushed upwards for a more or less extensive folding back of the said flaps.
  • the pressure beams 48 are raised and at the same time the tiltable stops 29, 31 are lowered whereafter the stack of liners on the carrying surface 26 is released for delivery by the conveyor 28.
