Abstract
Drive unit for motor vehicles, comprising an internal combustion engine (22) with a clutch (4, 5) at one end plane (21) of the engine and a gear box (10) beside the engine. The gear box is oriented so that the distal end of its input shaft (9) points in the same direction as a shaft (6) joined to the clutch. Via an extra transmission (7, 8, 11), the clutch drives the input of the gear box. The gear box is suspended in a housing (20, 23) over said extra transmission.
Description
TRANSVERSE ENGINE WITH GEAR BOX FOR MOTOR VEHICLES
The present invention relates to drive unit for motor vehicles comprising an internal combustion engine designed to be mounted with its crank shaft transverse to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, a clutch device joined to a crank shaft end and enclosed in a clutch housing on an end plane of the engine block, and a manual shift gear box driveably connected to the clutch device with a gear box housing which is joined to the clutch housing.
In known drive units of the type described above, the gear box housing is bolted directly to the clutch housing and the gear box is thus a direct extension of the engine block. Conventional manual gear boxes have thus been able to be used for engines with up to four cylinders in a row without any problems arising with the lateral space in the engine compartment. For engines with more than four cylinders, other solutions than in line cylinders have been chosen, primarily six cylinder V-engines. Lately, however, extremely short gear boxes have been developed by using double countershafts, which has made it possible to have a five cylinder transversely mounted engine in an inter- mediate class automobile. Straight engines with more than five cylinders and with cylin¬ der volumes of more than about two litres previously have not been able to be trans¬ versely mounted due to the fact that the complete drive unit, i.e. engine, clutch housing and gear box, would have been too long even if a known short gear box with double countershafts were used. The purpose of the present invention is to achieve a drive unit of the type described by way of introduction, which has a gear box arrangement, which makes it possible economically and practically to transversely mount a six cylinder straight engine in an intermediate class automobile.
This is achieved according to the invention by virtue of the fact that the gear box housing is arranged beside the engine block with its axial direction parallel to the axis of the crank shaft, that a distal end of a input shaft in the gear box housing points in the same direction as said crank shaft end, that a transmission connects an output shaft of the clutch device to said input shaft and that the gear box housing is carried in a housing over said transmission, which housing is joined to the clutch housing. The design according to the invention is based on the idea of quite simply turning a known manual gear box 180° and placing it behind the engine block, which means that its length will not affect the length of the drive unit. The extra transmission,
which is required between the clutch and the input shaft of the gear box, which can consist of a j-air of sockets and a chain therebetween, can be made very short in the axial direction. A gear box with a basic design as disclosed in SE-A-454 073 can be used, i.e. with an integrated differential. Such a gear box designed for direct mounting on a clutch housing, need only be modified with respect to the mounting plane of the gear box housing, which must be adapted to the mounting plane of the housing over the chain transmission instead of to the mounting plane of the clutch housing.
The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to examples shown in the accompanying drawings, where Fig. 1 shows diagramatically a drive unit according to the invention and Fig. 2 shows an end view of the drive unit.
In Fig. 1, the numeral 1 designates an outer cylinder of a six cylinder straight engine and the numeral 2 designates a crank shaft, to the end flange 3 of which a fly¬ wheel 4 is securely bolted. The flywheel 4 forms a portion of a conventional disc clutch with a driven disc 5, which is non-rotatably fixed to an output shaft 6, which at its outer end supports a sprocket 7. A second sprocket 8 is non-rotatably fixed to the distal end of a shaft 9 which is the input shaft of a five speed manual gear box, generally designated 10. Via a chain 11, the output shaft 6 drives the input shaft 9 of the gear box. As an alternative to a chain transmission 7, 8 and 11, a gear transmission with three gears can be used. In addition to the input shaft 9, the gear box has a first countershaft 12 and a second countershaft 13, each of which at its end proximate the input side non-rotatably carries a gear 14, 15, respectively, which engages the crown gear 16 of a differential 17. The gear box can be of the type which is shown and described in the above- mentioned SE-A-454 073 and for a more detailed description of the torque transfer in the various gear speeds reference is made to this patent specification.
A clutch or flywheel housing 20 is bolted in a conventional manner by means of bolts (not shown) to an end plane 21 on the engine block 22. The housing 20 is made in one piece with the housing 23 which encloses the chain transmission 7, 8 and 11. For example, the housings 20, 23 can be cast in one piece in an aluminum alloy. The housing 24 of the gear box 10 has a mounting plane 25, which is bolted to a mounting plane 27 of the housing 23 by means of bolts 26. The plane 27 lies coplanar with the
clutch housing plane 28 bolted against the end plane 21 of the engine block 22, and this means that the mounting planes 27 and 28 can be machined in a single step.
The integrated housings 20, 23 form a single suspension device for the gear box 10 and no additional suspension device has proved necessary.
By means of the design described above, a single base design for a manual five speed gear box with integrated differential can be used both for an end-mounted gear box in a four or five cylinder engine and with a simple modification for a parallel mounted gear box of a six cylinder engine.
