Abstract

Radio communication apparatus in the form of a base station, for example for a cellular or cordless telephone system, is designed to fit into a standard aperture normally used for a ceiling tile in a false or suspended ceiling.

Description

INDOOR RADIO COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
This invention relates to radio communication apparatus.
Cordless telephone and cordless PABX equipment is coming into more widespread use in offices, shops and public places. Such equipment is normally fitted to a wall, and can be unsightly. The present invention offers an innovative approach to such installations, which overcomes the problem of appearance and offers greater flexibility in the location of the equipment.
According to one aspect of the invention radio communication apparatus is designed to fit into a standard aperture normally used for a ceiling tile.
Preferably, the radio communication apparatus is in the form of a base station for a telephone system or a local area network.
According to another aspect of the invention a base station for a telephone system or local area network is mounted on a ceiling tile.
According to another aspect a ceiling tile incorporates a base station for a telephone system or local area network. According to a yet further aspect a ceiling incorporates a plurality of ceiling tiles, a base station for a telephone system or local area network being located on the upper surface of one of the tiles.
The ceiling tile incorporating the base station is preferably dimensioned to match one of the standard sizes of ceiling tile, so that the ceiling tile with base station can easily be fitted into an existing ceiling or alternatively be fitted as original equipment in a new ceiling. It will be appreciated that the invention is most easily used in false (ie suspended) ceilings.
The base station may be a base transceiver station (BTS) for a cellular telephone system, or may be a base station for a cordless telephone system.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an underside view of a ceiling provided with a base station according to the invention, and.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view along the line II-II of Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1 , the ceiling is a false or suspended ceiling and comprises a plurality of square ceiling tiles one of which (marked 1 in the drawings) is modified by having mounted thereabove a base station 2 for a radio telephone system, as shown in Figure 2. The base station 2 has an H-field flat antenna printed on a printed circuit board, the antenna being called a "patch antenna". The antenna is conveniently coplanar with the ceiling tile and may be mounted on the upper or lower surface thereof.
The underside of the ceiling tile matches the remaining ceiling tiles which are supported by the conventional ceiling tile supports 3.
The invention can be applied to cordless telephones, low power small size base stations serving cells of small size, called micro BTS, cordless local area networks (LANs), and can be used with radio or infra-red communication links.
The described embodiment has the following advantages
- the base station is out of sight
- the base station can be positioned in the middle of a large open plan office
- the cabling to the base station can be hidden
- easy installation
- cabling for the base station can be run through the roof space defined by the void above the suspended or false ceiling.
