  • Panel air filter elements are substantially flat and incorporate pleated filtering media through which the combustion air passes so that contaminants are removed from the combustion " air.
  • These panel air filters in addition to a pleated array of filtering media, also include a bead of resilient sealing material which circumscribes the array and projects laterally therefrom to act as a gasket when the array is installed in a conventional air cleaner housing (not shown).
  • the sealing bead is typically made of urethane, which expands into the interstices defined between the pleats to seal the edges of the pleats.
  • the present invention permits plastisol to be used as a sealing agent, but also permits other materials that do not require a foaming agent, such as urethane, to also be used.
  • One embodiment of the present invention also provides a supporting member which not only forces the sealant into the interstices between the pleats of the filtering media when the filter element is manufactured, but also acts as a rigid or semi-rigid supporting member to surround and stabilize the edges of the element.
  • the supporting member is preferably made of plastic, but may be made of any rigid or semi-rigid material.

  • Each of the pleats are defined by contiguous surfaces 24, 26. Accordingly, the array 12 is also defined by side edges 27, 28 and end edges 30, 32.
  • a parametrically extending, laterally projecting sealing bead 34 projects from the lower edge 22 of the array 12 and circumscribes the side edges 27, 28 and end edges 30, 32 of the array 12.
  • the bead 34 includes a portion 36 which is covered by a portion of the array 12 adjacent the edges 27, 28, 30, and 32 and is forced up around the tips of the adjacent pleats to seal the edges of the pleats.
  • the bead 34 further includes a transversely extending surface 37 that projects laterally from the array 12. The surface 37 is covered by transversely extending surface 38 of a ring-shaped support member 40.
  • the support member 40 includes a portion 42 which is embedded within the bead 36 and a circumscribing portion 44 which circumscribes and engages the edges 27, 28, 30, 32 of the array 12, to thereby provide lateral support for these edges and to stabilize the shape of the array, so that when the array is used by communicating air from the upper surface 18 through the pleats to the lower surface 22 thereof, displacement of the pleats is resisted by the support member 40.
  • the sealing bead 34 is clamped between portions of the housing to prevent bypass of air around the element
  • the support member 40 is preferably made of plastic or some other rigid or semi-rigid material that provides the necessary support for the array 12.
  • the filter element 10 is manufactured by first pleating the filtering media to form the pleats 16 in a manner well known to those skilled in the art.
  • the pleated filtering media can be any conventional media, such as, filtering paper or an air laid, batt type of filtering media.
  • the array 12 is cut to size and placed on supporting surface 46 of a die 48 which is provided with a groove 50 in which the sealant material forming the bead 34 is dispensed.
  • the sealant material may be, for example, urethane rubber or any other suitable sealant material.
  • the support member 40 is then placed over the array 12 and forced downwardly viewing Figure 2 until the transversely extending portion 38 engages the transversely extending surface 37 of the bead 34.
  • the embedded portion 42 extends into the bead 50, and the sealing material is displaced from the groove 50 into the interstices between the surfaces 24, 36 and around the tips 20 of the pleats 16, thereby embedding the peripheral pleats adjacent the edges 27, 28, 30, and 32 of the array 12 in a sealant material to thereby seal the tips of the pleats to prevent bypass of air around the pleats.
  • the die 48 is then stripped in the conventional manner, such that the embedded portion 42 remains in place within the sealant, and the supporting portion 40 remains in place adjacent the corresponding edges.
  • the supporting member 40 is not used in the embodiment of Figure 3, so that the pleats 116 are self-supporting.
  • the process for the manufacture of the filter as shown in Figure 3 includes the step of, once the array 112 is placed on the supporting surface 146 and the sealant bead 134 is dispensed in the groove 150, of placing a cover die 152 in position over the 148 as illustrated in Figure 3.
  • Cover die 152 includes a groove 156 which is cut completely around the cover die 152, and one or more apertures 158 which communicate with the groove 156 and which permit the injection of air or another gas into the sealant material 134.
  • the sealant material 134 is urethane rubber, the air or other gas forces a portion of the urethane out of the groove and around the tips of the pleats, in much the same way as the sealant material in the embodiment of Figure 1 is displaced by inserting the supporting member 44 into the sealant material. If the sealant material 134 requires a gaseous foaming agent, the gaseous foaming agent is forced into the sealant material 134 through the apertures 158 and groove 156 to cause foaming of the sealant material so that it expands into the adjacent pleats of the array 12, thus sealing the tips in a way well known to those skilled in the art. The cover member 152 is then removed and the sealant stripped from the groove 150, and the array with the sealant in place is then removed from the surface 146.

Abstract

Filtre servant à filtrer l'air de combustion d'un moteur à combustion interne constitué en plaçant une rangée de papier plissé sur une surface de support d'une matrice de façon que les bords de la rangée s'étendent sur une rainure remplie ultérieurement d'un matériau d'étanchéité. Dans une variante, le matériau d'étanchéité est introduit dans la rainure, puis contraint à monter le long des interstices entre les plis, par l'introduction en force d'un élément de support rigide ou semi-rigide dans la rainure, pour que ledit matériau entre dans les plis. L'élément de support reste ensuite dans sa position pour apporter une stabilité latérale et un appui aux éléments de filtrage. Dans l'autre variante, le matériau d'étanchéité est déplacé par l'introduction de gaz comprimé dans une rainure dans une matrice fixe demi-moule. Le gaz peut être un agent moussant si le matériau d'étanchéité est un matériau qui requiert un agent moussant.
