Abstract

A universal method, known as VIDEOCODEC UNIVERSEL, for coding video signals for digitally transmitting or memorizing data relating to a still or moving picture, said method being characterized in that: image data is organized by the image memory controller; transformed coefficients are processed by a flexibility processor (FXP); transformed and processed coefficients are reorganized and entropically coded by the Universal variable length coder (U-VLC); the coefficients thereby coded are structured by the universal multiplexer; the coded data are controlled in a buffer by the BRX (Buffer regulator); the regulated data are collected into cells by the packetizer/multiplexer - depacketizer/demultiplexer; the functions described above are reversed by the decoding function; the local clock of the decoder is picked up by the ASD; coding and decoding are made flexible by specifical parameterization of procedures; installing in parallel several VIDEOCODEC UNIVERSELs allows efficient coding of high definition television.
