Definitions
- This invention relates to a method and apparatus for selectively feeding web stock. This approach permits endless stock feeding.
- the reservoir of web stock which supplies a stock handling machine is commonly a rolled web of stock material.
- the machine may be stopped and rethreaded with another roll.
- the machine may be stopped and the leading portion of the web of another roll spliced to the first roll and then the web of the first roll severed from the roll behind the splice.
- the machine may then be restarted and will feed from the second roll.
- the section of the web containing the splice is cut out and discarded at some downstream point in the machine.
- the stock is cut by the stock handling machine and spliced sections removed by an attendant who must watch for same.
- a third known method of replenishing an exhausted roll is called the "flying splice".
- the leading edge of a second roll is spliced to the web of the depleted roll on the run and, again, the web of the depleted roll is then severed from the depleted roll upstream of the splice and the splice cut out and discarded at some downstream point in the machine.
- the present invention seeks to provide a method and apparatus which is adaptable to provide sequences of distinguishable cut stock to a stock handling machine.
- apparatus for selectively feeding stock from one of at least two reservoirs of stock comprising:
- feed control means to selectively activate one of said positive feed means, whereby said feed control means may selectively activate one of said first and said second positive feed means in order to feed stock from one of said first and second reservoirs of stock material to said conveyor means.
- a method for selectively feeding and separating stock from one of at least two reservoirs of stock comprising the steps of: (a) feeding stock from a selected one of at least two reservoirs of stock material to a common dispensing area;
- figure 1 is a schematic view of a prior art endless stock feeding machine
- figure 2 is a perspective view of a selective stock feeding machine made in accordance with this invention
- figure 3 is a schematic view of another embodiment of a selective stock feeding machine made in accordance with this invention.
- a prior art flying splice machine 10 comprises two rolls 12 and 14 of web stock.
- a feed roller 16 feeds web stock 18 from roll 12 to pinch rollers 20.
- feed roller 22 brings the web 26 from roll 14 up to the speed of web 18 and glue gun 24 then deposits glue on web 26.
- the webs are then compressed together at the glued area by compression rollers 28 to form a splice and the web 18 is then severed from roll 12 just upstream of the splice by cutting station 30.
- a previous splice resulting from the severing of web 26 from a depleted roll in the position of roll 14 is illustrated at 32.
- a cutting station will sever the web stock, and downstream of this an attendant will visually identify and discard the spliced sections.
- FIG. 2 An embodiment of the subject invention is illustrated in figure 2 at 50.
- Two reservoirs of stock material which comprise two rolled webs of stock 52 and 54 are mounted in overlying relation upstream of a dispensing station 57 (the downstream direction of the device is illustrated at 58).
- the dispensing station includes a fixed guide 56 which is triangular in cross-section having two merging guide surfaces 60 and 62 which meet at a dispensing area 59.
- the guide surfaces meet at an acute angle of about 3 or 4 degrees (the angle is exaggerated on the figure for clarity).
- the dispensing station also includes drivable feed wheels 68 and 78.
- Drivable feed wheel 68 is driven by a drive means comprising electric motor 80 and drivable feed wheel 78 is driven by a second drive means comprising electric motor 82.
- the web 64 of roll 52 feeds to the nip 66 formed between the surface 60 of fixed guide 56 and drivable feed wheel 68.
- the web 74 of roll 54 feeds to the nip 76 formed between the surface 62 of fixed guide 56 and drivable feed wheel 78.
- the drivable feed wheels 68 and 78 act as positive feed means for web stock from the rolls.
- a separating station 84 positioned downstream of the fixed guide comprises a platen 86 for supporting stock material and a reciprocating cutter 88.
- a conveyor means downstream of the separating station 84 comprises a conveyor belt 90 supported at one end by conveyor belt supporting roller 92, which roller forms a nip with pinch roller 94.
- the conveyor means 90 may feed to a conventional dispensing station, or the separating station and conveyor means may comprise the front end of a stock handling machine of conventional configuration.
- Roll 52 is rotated by roll feed motor 94 which comprises a stock feed means and roll 54 by roll feed motor 96 which comprises a second stock feed means.
- Conveyor belt supporting roller is driven by'electric motor 100.
- a low stock reservoir sensor 102 is associated with roll 52 and a similar sensor 104 is associated with roll 54.
- a feed control means 98 is operatively connected to the electric motors 80, 82, 94, 96, and 100 and to the reciprocating cutter 88 so as to be able to activate these devices.
- the feed control means is also connected to sensors 102 and 104 in order to receive signals from these sensors.
- a photosensor 108 is directed toward the top surface of web 64 upstream of cutting station 84. The output of this photosensor feeds the feed control moans 98. A similar photosensor (not shown) is directed .toward the bottom surface of web 74 upstream of the cutting station. These photosensors are employed during the rethreading of a web, as will be more fully explained hereinafter.
- the feed control means 98 may activate motors 94 and 80 in order to feed stock from roll 52 to the dispensing area 59.
- the feed control means also activates motor
- the feed control means activates motors 96- and 82 and stops motors 94 and
- FIG. 80 illustrates the machine just after a cutting operation which has severed a sheet 106 from its web.
- Feed control means 98 will then continue to feed the new web until it receives a signal from photosensor 108 which may occur when a registration mark provided on the new web is sensed by the photosensor 108. In this way the leading edge of a web may be threaded to a known position.
- the described machine is ideally suited to operation involving step feeding to the separating station.
- Figure 3 represents a further embodiment of the invention wherein roll 152 of web stock material feeds a web 164 to vacuum cup 168 and roll 154 feeds a web 174 to vacuum cup 178.
- the vacuum cups 168 and 178 may oscillate between a pick up area at 157 and a dispensing area at 159, the latter area being at the input end of belt feeder 190.
- a vacuum supply 171 supplies a vacuum to vacuum cup 168 and a second vacuum supply 173 supplies a vacuum to vacuum cup 178.
- the downstream feed direction of the apparatus is illustrated at 158.
- a separating station 184 comprising cutters 188a and 188b and platen 186 is located just downstream of the pick up area 157.
- the control inputs to roll feed motors 194 and 196, oscillating motors 180 and 182, vacuum supplies 171 and 173, cutters 188a and 188b / and belt feeder motors 192 and 194 originate in feed control means 198.
- control means 198 may activate roll feed motor 194 and oscillating motor 180 in order to feed web 164 to the dispensing area 159 at the input of belt feeder 190.
- the portion 165 of the web 164 which extends beyond the vacuum cup 168 is then taken up by belt feed 190 and the vacuum from vacuum cup 168 is then cut off and this cup returns to the pick up area.
- roll feed motor 196 and oscillating motor 182 to vacuum cup 178 are activated to bring web 174 toward the dispensing area 159.
- cutter 188a is activated to sever web 164 and the vacuum is returned to vacuum cup 168.
- the leading edge of web 174 chases the trailing edge of severed web 164 to the dispensing area 157 so that the leading edge of web 174 is taken up by the belt feed 190 just as the trailing edge of severed web 164 passes the input to the belt feed. In this way the feeding of stock through to the output of the belt feed continues uninterrupted.
- vacuum cups 168 and 178 with their vacuum supplies 171 and 173 and oscillating motors 180 and 182 constitute positive feed means under control of feed control means 198. It will further be realised that depleted roll 152 may be changed for a new roll after completion of the change-over to feeding from roll 154.
- the two reservoirs of stock material may comprise distinguishable stock. That is, the reservoirs may, for example, comprise pre-printed stock.
- the feed control means may be programmed to alternately feed stock from the two reservoirs to the separating station in order that desired sequences of distinguishable cut stock are fed along the conveyor 90 of figure 2 or the belt feed 190 of figure 3.
- the low stock reservoir sensors may be used simply to stop the device until the reservoir is replaced and rethreaded or to activate a flying splice in a known manner.
- the separating station has been described as a platen and reciprocating cutter, it will be obvious to one skilled in the art that other separating means may be employed such as a rotary knife, a fly through knife or a scissor. As well, if perforated stock were employed, the separating station could be a burster to burst off stock in a manner well understood by those skilled in the art. With perforated stock, the stock reservoir may comprise a stack of stock which is a continuous zig-zag web.
