A garment (10, 10') characterized by one or more audio speakers (20, 21) secured to the garment for broadcasting sound to the surrounds of the garment when it is worn, and one or more electrical conductors (30) attached to the inside of the garment for electrically coupling the speaker(s) (20, 21) to a source of sound.

Description

GARMENT WITH INBUILT SPEAKERS
This invention relates to a novel form of garment.
The Walkman (Trade Mark) radio and/or audio cassette player, and other products of a similar kind, are well established as personal, highly portable music sources. In more sociable circumstances, where it is appropriate to share one's musical pleasure with others, the portable radio of old and the more recently developed boombox style of equipment are more favoured. In accordance with the invention, the inventor has appreciated that the objectives of the latter class of entertainment devices can be met by a novel garment adapted to the purpose and that the garment has more general application to functional purposes such as 2-way radio communication.
The invention accordingly provides a garment characterized by one or more audio speakers secured to the garment for broadcasting sound to the surrounds of the garment when it is worn, and one or more electrical conductors attached to the inside of the garment for coupling said speaker(s) to a source of sound.
Advantageously, there are two audio speakers secured to respective sides of the garment.
The garment may be a jacket or coat. The audio speakers may then be secured to respective outside portions of the sleeves of the jacket or coat in the upper arm region.
The source may include amplifier means attached to the garment, and means to retain an audio cassette player, radio or like device in the garment. Alternatively, the source may include amplifier means attached to the garment and two-way or walkie talkie radio means carried by the garment, and/or means to retain such radio means in the garment.
The invention will be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a jacket comprising a garment according to a first embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic representation of the jacket, showing both internally and externally mounted components;
Figure 3 is a cross-section on the line 3-3 in Figure 2, showing an amplifier and its surroundings;
Figure 4 depicts a typical switch configuration; and Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 2 of a second embodiment of the invention.
The jacket 10 illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 includes the usual body part 12, closed by a line of buttons 14, a collar 16, and a pair of long sleeves 18, 19.
The jacket is fitted with an in-built audio system comprising a pair of speakers 20, 21, a corresponding pair of amplifiers 22, 23 for directing amplified signals to the respective speakers, an inside pocket removably retaining a radio and/or audio cassette player 24, e.g. a Walkman unit, respective battery packs 26, 27, e.g. configured to develop 6 volts, for powering the amplifiers, and multiple insulated electrically conductive leads 30 electrically coupling the components together in a completed electrical circuit. The speakers 20, 21 are respectively attached to the jacket in the upper arm regions of sleeves 18, 19, while amplifiers 22, 23 are fitted internally in the underarm regions of the jacket. Leads 30 are sewn by eyes or hoops 31 to the inside face of the jacket at regular intervals. Bias edging may alternatively or additionally be applied over the leads.
The full circuit is shown in Figure 2. The battery packs 26, 27 are retained in suitable pockets for easy removal when necessary, e.g. when the garment is to be washed, and are electrically coupled to each other and to the respective amplifiers. For convenience, each battery pack has an on-off switch 26a, 27a, and each associated lead terminates in a jack so that the battery packs can be removed. The battery packs are configured to facilitate recharging. A common lead 30a from the Walkman pocket has a jack 30b for detachable connection to the Walkman and is coupled through a selective 2-way switch 34 either via lead 30e to amplifiers 22, 23 or, via lead 30d, to a jack 32 on the jacket collar 16 for connection to a headphone set.
As best seen in Figure 3, each amplifier 22, 23 is rendered flexible by being provided on a three-part baseboard 40. The three boards 41, e.g. each about 150 x 45 x 5mm, are secured side by side to a vinyl backing sheet 43 in a closed pocket formed on the inside face of garment body 42 by a fabric cover 44 sewn to the garment body around the amplifier baseboards. The circuit components on each board are sealed by a silicon cover 46 to render the units fully waterproof, and connected board-to-board by a suitable light gauge wiring 48.
Figure 4 depicts the mounting attachment for switch 34. The switch is fastened to a metal backing plate 36 and this is sewn to the inside face of the jacket by tie loops 38. A fabric cover 39 is laid over the plate and sewn to the jacket material about but clear of plate 36.
When the jacket is worn and activated, the speakers 20, 21 receive electrical signals from amplifiers 22,23 on leads 30c and convert the signals to sound broadcast to the surrounds of jacket 10. The speakers are supported in a detachable manner. For example, a respective opening may be formed in the garment sleeve and lined with a rigid annular plate secured to the garment material. Behind the opening, a pocket sewn to the garment holds the speaker against the annular plate but has a diametral slit to allow parting of the pocket halves for insertion or removal of the speaker.
Instead of providing a pocket for the radio and/or audio cassette player 24, the jacket and radio/player may have co-operable elements of a Velco (Trade Mark) contact-fastening arrangement.
It will be appreciated that the speakers, 20,21, battery packs 26,27 and radio/player 24 can be readily removed when the garment is washed. The amplifiers 22,23 are waterproofed, wafer like and flexibly constructed and so may remain in place during washing.
Figure 5 depicts an alternative embodiment of jacket 10'. Like elements are indicated by like reference numerals. In this case, the source of sound for the speakers is not a radio or audio cassette player but a voice-actuated 2-way or walkie-taklie radio 24'. Radio 24' may be secured in place or removably carried in an inside or outside pocket. The walkie-talkie unit and battery packs 26*,27' are electrically coupled by leads 30' to a single amplifier 22' which in turn feeds both speakers 20',21' arranged in series along lead 30C. The speakers are here located in the shoulders of the jacket.
A selective switch 34' and earphone lead 30d' are provided but the earphone 33 is actually stored in a pocket 35 for the purpose. A microphone 50 for transmitting messages from walkie talkie 24' is concealed in one of. the front wings of jacket collar 16' so as to pick up the wearer's voice. The embodiment of Figure 5 permits the user, while wearing the jacket, to engage in hands free conversation at a distance permitted by the range of the selected walkie talkie. As such, the jacket is of particular interest for use by the military, or by police and other emergency personnel, e.g. as a garment for persons engaged in search or rescue operations.

Claims

CLAIMS : -
1. A garment characterized by one or more audio speakers secured to the garment for broadcasting sound to the surrounds of the garment when it is worn, and one or more electrical conductors attached to the inside of the garment for electrically coupling said speaker(s) to a source of sound.
2. A garment according to claim 1 wherein there are two of said audio speakers secured to respective sides of the garment.
3. A garment according to claim 2 wherein said garment is a jacket, and said audio speakers are secured to respective outside portions of the sleeves of the jacket in the upper arm region.
4. A garment according to claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said source includes amplifier means attached to the garment, and means to retain an audio cassette player, radio or like device in the garment.
5. A garment according to claims 3 and 4' wherein said amplifier means comprises a pair of amplifiers attached to the body of the jacket in the underarm region, said electrical conductors coupling said retaining means to the amplifiers and the amplifiers to the speakers.
6. A garment according to claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said source includes amplifier means attached to the garment and 2-way or walkie talkie radio means carried by the garment, and/or means to retain such radio means in the garment.
7. A garment according to any preceding claim further comprising one or more battery pack holders attached to the garment for supplying electrical power to said source of sound.
8. A garment according to any preceding claim comprising further electrical conductor means and associated switch means attached to the inside of the garment for selectively coupling said source of sound to said speaker(s) or to another element such as headphones or an earphone.
