Abstract

The drain means (11) includes at least one element (13) which extends a distance into the bag (5) aligned with or around the outlet opening (3) and defines at least one passage (15) between the end (17) of the outlet opening of the at least one element (13) farthest from the outlet opening and the outlet opening (3) of the spout (1). The wall of the bag (5) which is opposite to the outlet opening (3) of the spout (1) is thus prevented from being sucked across the bag when the bag (5) is partly or almost completely drained of liquid and, therefore, has collapsed. In this way the opposite wall of the bag does not cover the outlet opening (3) and prevent liquid flow therethrough.

Description

A drain means for the outlet opening of the spout of a collap¬ sible bag of plastic film or laminated plastic films for use in a socalled bag-in-box package.
The present invention relates to a drain means for the outlet opening in the spout of a collapsible bag of plastic film or laminated plastic films for use in a εocalled bag-in-box package.
Bag-in-box packages are used increasingly for storage, shipment, distribution and bottling of liquid pro¬ ducts such as wine, soft drinks, chemicals and similar li¬ quids, or semi-liquid concentrates for making beverages, and consist of a bag made of plastic film or laminated plastic films containing the beverage, the beverage concen¬ trate or other liquid products and placed in a rigid box of cardboard, synthetic material or corrugated paperboard and provided with a spout at one end in which a tap may be inser¬ ted for partial or complete discharge of the liquid from the bag by gravity or by pumping.
A general problem of these packages iε that when the bag i partly or almost completely empty and, therefore, has collapsed because of the vacuum built up, the continued discharge of liquid from the bag through the tap takes place slowly and apparently obstructed by the collapse of the bag .
One of the causes of this problem is thought to be that folds and creases are formed in the bag material during its collapse and that thus liquid pockets are formed in the bag from which liquid flows but slowly to the outlet opening of the spout.
To overcome this problem, WO 85/04383 proposes an insert for a collapsible container with a spout member, and consisting of an attachment section by means of which the insert member can be mounted on the spout, and an elon¬ gate main section which is pivotally attached to the attach¬ ment section and having a continous liquid passage along its whole length, which passage being in fluid communication with the liquid inside the container. When the walls of the container collapse during dis¬ charge, the insert maintains a free channel for liquid flow from the inside of the container via the insert mem¬ ber to the spout. Compared to other prior art arrangements for the same purpose this insert has the advantage that it can be attached to the spout and be placed in the con¬ tainer during the production thereof.
" The present invention is based on another assump¬ tion of the cause of the above-mentioned general problem, namely that the main cause therefore being that in the partly or almost completely drained and collapsed state of the bag the wall of the bag opposite to the spout is sucked towards the outlet opening of the spout by the liquid flow and blocks it partly or completely so that liquid cannot escape freely through the spout or a tap mounted therein.
The object of the invention is, therefore, to overcome the problem thus defined by providing a drain means securing liquid passage between the spout and the opposite wall of the bag, also when the bag is partly or almost completely empty, as well as a drain means which can be mounted in the bag during the production thereof.
According to the present invention, a drain means for the outlet opening of the spout of a collapsible bag of plastic film or laminated plastic films bag for a socalled bag-in-box package is characterized in that the drain means comprises at least one element which ex¬ tends a distance into the bag aligned with or around the outlet opening and defines at least one passage between the end of the said at least one element remote from the outlet opening and the outlet opening of the spout.
By these measures, one liquid passage is always established from the interior of the bag to the outlet opening of the spout. It is preferred that the drain means comprises a number of the said elements which between them define a number of the said passages.
The drain means may be a generally annular body surrounding the outlet opening of the spout, and the said passage or passages may pass through the circumferential walls of the body.
The drain means may be made of any material which is not affected by or affects the liquid in the bag, but plastic material is preferred.
The drain means may be attached to the spout, for example by a snaplock fit or adhesives, but it is preferred that it should be integrated with the spout, preferably so that the drain means and spout is one in¬ jection-moulded part, and it is also preferred that the drain means and the spout be injection-moulded of a plas¬ tic material, preferably polyethylene, which may be wel¬ ded to the plastic film material of the bag or to the inner layer of the laminated plastic films material.
In the following the invention will be explained more detailed with reference to the drawings, whereon
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view "with parts cut away of a preferred embodiment of a drain means according to the invention made as a unit integral with the spout and placed inside the bag of a bag-in-box package, and
Fig. 2 shows with parts cut away an axial cross section through a means like the one shown in Fig . 1 placed in a bag-in-box package in which the bag is part¬ ly or almost completely empty.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a spout 1 of plastic material such as polyethylene with an outlet opening therethrough 3, which spout is secured sealingly by welding in a punched hole in a bag 5 made of plastic film or laminated plastic films. The bag 5 is placed in a box 7 made of cardboard or corrugated paperboard so that the spout pro- jects from an opening 9 in the wall of the box 7- The box 7 and the bag 5 with the spout 1 so far constitute a prior art bag-in-box package for liquids such as wine, soft drinks or beverage concentrates, and during shipment and storage the spout 1 of such a package may be sealed with a cap or plug (not shown) , while during discharge of liquid from the package there may sealingly be inser¬ ted e.g."a tap (not shown) in the spout 1.
According to the invention, that side of the spout 1 facing the interior of the bag 5 has a drain means which is generally indicated by 11 , and which consists of a generally annular body 12 surrounding the outlet opening 3 of the spout 1.
As shown in the drawing, the body 11 may be made integral with the spout 1 e.g. by injection moulding of the spout 1 and the body 11 to form one unit, or the body 12 may be secured to the spout 1 , e.g. with an ad¬ hesive or by a snap fit.
The body 12 consists of a number of elements 13 which extend a distance into the bag 5 around the out¬ let opening 3, and which between them defines a plurality of passages 15 between the end 17 remote from the outlet opening 3 of these elements 13 and the outlet opening 3.
During discharge of liquid from the bag 5, the passages 15 will, even when the bag is partly or almost completely empty as shown in Fig. 2, and the wall of the bag opposite to the spout 1 engages the ends 17 of the elements 13, allow free flow throught the passages from the interior of the bag 5 to the outlet opening 3 of the spout 1 and prevent the wall of the bag 5 opposite to the spout.1 from blocking the liquid flow through the outlet 3.
It is an advantage of the embodiment shown and described of the drain means 11 according to the inven¬ tion that it forms a unit with the spout 1 which during production of the bag 5 may be placed in a punched hole in the side wall of the bag and welded to it in one ope¬ ration so that no further process stages are required during production of the bag 5.
Although the drain means according to the inven- tion is described above in connection with a preferred embodiment, it is evident that within the scope of the following patent claims it may be configured in other ways. For example, the drain means may simply consist of a pair of crossed steel wire bows, e.g. of stainless steel, which with outward bent ends are retained by a snaplock effect in a recess in the outlet opening of the spout. Similarly, the drain means may be in the form of a rigid rod or rods secured to a tap which is designed for insertion into the outlet opening of the spout and so that the rod or rods extends into the bag from the outlet opening.

Claims

1. A drain means (11) for the outlet opening (3) of the spout (1) of a collapsible bag (5) made of plastic films or laminated plastic films in a socalled bag-in-box package, characterized in that the drain means (11) includes at least one element (13) which ex¬ tends a distance into the bag (5) aligned with or around the outlet opening (3) and defines at least one passage (15) between the end (17) of the said at least one ele- ment (13) remote from the outlet opening (3) and the out¬ let opening (3) of the spout (1) .
2. A drain means as claimed in claim 1 , charac¬ terized in that the drain means (11) includes a plurality of the said elements (13) which between them define a plurali t of the said passages (15) .
3. A drain means as claimed in claims 1 or 2, characterized in that the drain means (11) is a general¬ ly annular body (12) which surrounds the outlet opening (3) of the spout (1), and that the said passage or pas- sages (15) pass through the circumferential walls of the body (12) .
4. A drain means as claimed in any of the pre¬ ceding claims, characterized in that the drain means (11) consists of a plastic material .
5. A drain means as claimed in any of the pre¬ ceding claims, characterized in that the means unit (11) is attached to the spout (1 ) .
6. A drain means as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the drain means (11) is in- tegral with the spout (1) .
7. A drain means as claimed in claim 6, charac¬ terized in that the drain means (11) and the spout (1) is an injection-moulded component.
8. A drain means as claimed in claim 7, charac- terized in that the drain means (11) and the spout (1) are injection-moulded of a plastic material, preferably polyethylene, which is weldable to the plastic film ma¬ terial of the bag (5) or to the inner layer of the lami¬ nated plastic films material of the bag (5) .
