Abstract

A portable grill for firing with preferably solid fuel, e.g. charcoal or the like. The grill comprises a furnace, defined by a rectangular bottom wall (1), two end walls (2, 3) and two side walls (4, 5), and support means for a grill grating or the like are arranged above the furnace. Previously known grills of this kind are usually rigid and require large storage space. In some cases it is possible to dismantle at least parts of the grill, but this requires a lot of work. The object of the invention is to remove these disadvantages and provide a grill requiring very small storage space and being simple to get ready for use. According to the invention this is achieved in that the bottom wall (1) of the furnace is pivotally connected to each end wall (2, 3) by at least two pivot means (11) for pivotal movement around a line that is parallel to and situated adjacent to the edge of the bottom wall (1) facing the end wall (2, 31, and in that each side wall (4, 5) is pivotally connected to each end wall (2, 3) by a pivot means (11), which permits turning movement both around a line connecting the pivot means (11) at both ends of the side wall (4, 5) and around a line that is parallel to and situated adjacent to the edge of the side wall (4, 5) facing the end wall (2, 3), so that the grill, after turning of the side walls (4, 5) to positions where they are parallel to the bottom wall (1), is collapsible to a substantially flat condition.

Description

Portable grill
The present invention relates to a portable grill for firing with preferably solid fuel, said grill comprising a furnace and support means for a grill grating or the like arranged above the furnace, said furnace being defined by a substantially flat, rectangular bottom wall, two end walls •and two side walls.
Previously known grills of this kind comprise in general a box that usually is provided with a number of legs, which in many cases are removable in order to facilitate transport and storage of the grill. These grills have the disadvantage that they require relatively large storage space when not in use, and grills having removable legs or the like further require some assembly work before use and some dismantling after use.
The object of the present invention is to provide a portable grill of the above-mentioned kind, which requires very small storage space and which in a very simple way can be made ready for use and after use be prepared for storage. According to the invention this is achieved in a portable grill of the above-mentioned kind in that the bottom wall of the furnace is pivotally connected to each end wall by at least two pivot means for pivotal movement around a line that is parallel to and situated adjacent the edge of the bottom wall facing the end wall, and in that each side wall is pivot- ally connected to each end wall by a pivot means, which per¬ mits turning movements both around the line connecting the pivot means at both ends of the side wall and around a line that is parallel to and situated adjacent the edge of the side wall facing the end wall, so that the grill, after turning of the side walls to positions where they are pa¬ rallel to the bottom wall, is collapsible to a substantially flat condition.
The invention is described in detail below with re¬ ference to the accompanying drawings, on which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a grill according to one embodiment of the invention, said grill being ready for use, Fig. 2 shows the grill according to Fig. 1 partially collapsed, and Fig. 3 shows the grill according to Figs. 1 and 2 in fully collapsed condition.
The drawings show a grill according to the invention, said grill including a furnace that is defined by a flat, •rectangular bottom wall 1, two end walls 2 and 3 and two side walls and 5- The furnace has the shape of a box hav¬ ing substantially rectangular cross section, and when the grill is used fuel, e.g. charcoal or the like, is placed in the furnace, and to avoid dirtying the fuel may be placed on a removable metal -foil or the like. The end walls 2 and 3 are provided with slots 6 in their edges adjacent the side wall 5, and the side wall h is provided with holes 7 in its centre portion, said holes being provided at the same height as the slots 6. A grill grating 8 is provided with project¬ ing pins that are arranged to be received in the slots 6 and one of the holes 7, respectively, and by placing the pins in different slots and hole the grill grating 8 may be placed at the required distance above the bottom wall 1 of the fur¬ nace. In order to facilitate the handling of the grill grating it is provided with a foldable handle 9. The end walls 2 and 3 are further provided with openings 10 at their lower portions.
The bottom wall 1 and the side walls and 5 are pivotally connected to the end walls 2 and 3 by means of a number o'f pivot means 11. The bottom 1 is connected to each side wall 2 and 3 by means of two pivot means 11, while each of the side walls 4 and 5 is connected to each end wall by means of a single pivot means 11 which is arranged adjacent to the upper edge of the respective side wall. Each of the pivot means 11 includes an eye that is passed through an opening near that edge of the side wall or the bottom wall that is facing the respective end wall, and a pin or the like which is connected to the eye and is rotatably but axially non-slidably arranged in an opening in the end wall 2 or 3. In the embodiment shown in the drawings each pivot means 11 consists of a split pin, the legs of which are passed through the opening in the end wall 2 or 3 and are spread apart on the outside of said end wall. In this manner a pivotable connection is obtained, which permits movement between the two connected details in different directions. As an example each of the side walls 4 and 5* may be turned around a line connecting the two pivot means 11 of the side wall and may be turned around lines which are parallel to and situated adjacent the edge of the side wall facing the end wall. Due to the fact that the bottom wall 1 is connected to each end wall 2 and 3 by means of two pivot means 11 the bottom wall 1 is turnable in relation to each end wall only along a line which is pa¬ rallel to and situated adjacent the edge of the bottom wall facing the respective end wall.
When the grill according to the invention is ready for use the different details are positioned as shown in Fig. 1. Thereby the side walls and 5 will contact the bottom wall 1 with their lower edges, while the short edges of the side walls are in contact with the end walls 2 and 3- Thus, relative swinging movement between the bottom wall 1 and the end walls 2 and 3 is prohibited. After use the grill may be folded by turning the side walls and 5 around their pivot means 11 to the positions shown in Fig. 2, where the side walls 4 and 5 are substantially horizontal and parallel to the bottom wall 1. Thereafter the grill may be collapsed to the condition shown in Fig. 3 by turning the bottom wall 1 and the side walls 4 and 5 relative to the end walls 2 and 3, which is made possible by means of the pivot means 11. In collapsed condition the opening 10 may, as shown in Fig. 3, be used for carrying the grill, which due to its flat form in collapsed condition is very easy to store.
When the grill is to be erected the end walls 2 and 3 are turned in relation to the bottom wall 1 and the side walls 4 and 5 to the position shown by dash and dot lines in Fig. 2. This may be performed simply by lifting the left hand edge of the end wall 2, as seen in Fig. 2, and when the end walls 2 and 3 are substantially perpendicular to the bottom wall 1 the side walls 4 and 5 will turn under the in- flucence of gravity to the position shovm by dash and dot lines. The erection of the grill is therefore very simple, and further the side walls 4 and 5, in turned down position, will lock the whole grill, so that no separate locking means are required to lock the grill in erected position.
The invention is not limited to the above-described embodiment, but changes may be made within the scope of the accompanying claims.
