Description

tmf @Ww i l muito-d gioire JAMES 0L`D, 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. '87,7 90, dated March 16, 1869 rcssuoNo. 4,04.,dntefl'une 21, 1870.V
GRATE.
hwk-
The Schedule referre to in these Letters Patent and making part o! the same.
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be vit known that I, JAMEs OLD, of the city oiA Pittsburg, in the county of .Allegheny` and State oi" Pennsylvania, have invented a. new and useful Iml 'movement in Grates; and I do hereby declare the fol.
lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof',
reference being had to the accompanying drawingmaki a part of this specification, in whichnigu.: 1 is a front elevation of my improved grate und place;
Figure 2 is a vertical section, z x, iig. 1; and Figures 3 and 4 areV end views of the grate with de- .vicesattsched for stirring the file, and showing the lame' in di'erent positions.
"'Liis letters of'reference indicate like parts in euch. My invention relates to an improved construction of iinev'plsoe and grate; and consists in closing the under 'side of a grate with a rocking or tipping damper- -furnished with Yprojecting agitators which play.
.upward between the grate-bars, to stir the fire and disengagethe ashes, and also furnished with, devices for operating the same; also,iu attaching between the rear part of the grate and the vback wall, a lifting-bnr,
Aity-which to stir the lire in that part of the grate, and
open apertures for the admission of air thereto; and lastly, in so constructing the rear wallandcover-plate u( the tire-space as to heat the'air passing up an open chamber in the rear of the ixe, and discharge it into the tire-s beneath the cover plate, which latter extends rwardover the tine-space.
Devices oi the character referred to are not only dirable but very necessary in burning the soit or the'only available meansof fuel.
To enable others skilled in the art to make andl le my invention, I will proceedV to describe Aits conmotion and manner of use. l s A'represent the side, and a' the rear'walls of' a furnace, or stove, of any usual or known Y on. 1 The grate o r firebasket l is also of the ordinary castration, and is supported by the side walls in the but does not. extend quite to the back l ofthere-oharnber. l Along under the bottom of the grate b extends the c, and fromjthis the agtators c' extend iupward tweenthe te-bars b.
From either en d oftnhis plate c, or at any other del points, the levers e extend are pivotedto nerplrtof the gmts, and, byt irrear ends,
', n uitingen, d.
,H-II -blrdolos aperture between the van s i many. ingle slab jor jme,
bituminous coal, which, in many localities, is almost- .gu-ter the fue am he beuk wan a of nie-rirey made of fire-clay, and is so placed as to leave betweenv Between the roof-tile-h (which extends tothe basl:A l
wall a) and the back tile d, is left a. throat, i, which extends along nearly or quite the entire length ofthe re-spaoeand through which the air from the ash pit g, heated by passing along the rear face of the tile d, is discharged into the l'irespace under the covering` tile h, and at such point that, being deected forward by the tile"7t overhead, it comes into most intimate coutaot with the smoke, nnconsumed carbon, &c., which is given oii in considerable quantities from bituminous coal, and which smoke, &c., would otherwise deposit on the tile h, and prevent the radiation of heatthcre# from, or passup thethroat l into the chimney and be wasted. I
The oxygen of theairfthus fed in is deiiected for ward by the tile h, so as to unite with and igniteV the waste given oli by the iire, thus evolving increased light and heat, and keeping the lower 'face of the tile h free from deposits of carbon, and preserving its power of a radiator of heat, as well as etlectinga con-A sider/nble saving ofv fuel. Clhe construction also gives a perfectly-operating dust-tine, and such devices are applicable to vany lire place, and are'a complete eure ot' dustyre-places. Y
In order to operate the agitators c and tipping-bar d, I use a device particularly shown in figsf3 and 4.
The Ie'ver m has a head, s, pivoted at one point to n. lug, o, projecting from one ofthe bars b, and at another point has a wrist, o', passing through a slot in one of the agitators c, figs'. 1 and 4. p
By raising the lever m, ns in iig. 4, thel wrist o' passes to the rear of the slot in the agitator c" de'- presses the damper-plate b, elevates the lifting-bare',
loosens up the fuel in the back part ot the grate; and opens the whole bottom and rear part'of the grate to A the admission of air.
Combustion is consfxluentlyV kept up in therear part of the fire-space next the tile d, by which the" latter is' heated, a uniform ire kept up throughout the irespaoe, and, consequently, more heat secured y A from a tire-grate ot any given size.
By moving the levern and down a few times, the fuel in the grate is well s aken up, and the ashes fall ont intoV the ash-pit g.
If the re be too great, the lever m is loweredfas shown in iig, 3, and then the-plate c cutsmoii the sup ply of air under the grate, and the liftingbar o closes the veutinthe rear.
On the under-'side of teeming-.bar e' I makesle v ries of projections, x, which, when the bar is tilted up, act, like grate-bars, to prevent the fuel from falling through the apertnre'thus formed between the bar e and tile d.
By the use of vsuch devices, when desired, aV complete combustion of the fuel canbe secured througlr- .v
ont the fire-basket with the evolution of the maximum of heat; or, ,by merely shifting a lever, the grate can be so completely shut up that combustion will beV at once and almost entirely arrested, and .the tire kept from either expiring or burning out for a considerable' time.
The lcenters of motion o and o, and the slot in the agitator b', 'are so related to each 'other that the lever m locks the devices either open or shut, as the case may It will be observed that, with the construction and vmode of operation described, the agitators c are removed from the firey when a vivid combustion is required, 'whereby they are preserved from the destructive action of the fire thereon, `and inthis respect they differ from other devices already in use for the same PUI'POSC- What I claim as my invention, and desire' to secure i by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tilting damper-plate1 c, withl agitators c' ou its constructed and operating substantially as and for theV purposes hereinbefore set forth. y i 3. A dust and air-due, f, extending up from the ash-pit g back vof the vrear vtile d, and opening bya throat, t, into the upper part of the fire-space, under a covering-tile or plate, h, such covering-plate extending forward over the hre-space, rso asto bring the hot air from the ue finto close contact with the smoke and gases of combustion, and effect their more perfect ignition, substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I, the said JAMES OQD, have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES OLD.
